I was a big fan of LG's original "the V" (or VX9800), an ambitious handset that flips open, clamshell style, to reveal a large keyboard, laid out horizontally, and a landscape-based screen a lot like the Sidekick line of smart phones.
Well, LG is back with an update, the enV, also known as the VX9900, which is a substantial upgrade in many ways and can actually be had at a lower price!
Here's what's new: For starters, The enV has shed a good amount of the heft of the V, weighing 4.6 ounces vs. the V's 5.4 ounces. It's still 4.6 inches tall and is actually a bit wider (2.0 inches vs. 1.9 inches for the V), but the enV is now 0.8 inch thick vs. 1.0 inch thick for it's big brother. That may not sound like much, but it makes a huge difference in your pocket. The overall styling of the phone is more modern and impressive on the enV, too.
The biggest spec change is the new 2.0-megapixel camera vs. the 1.3-megapixel model on the old V. It's not a huge upgrade, but it's a good start, and it helps make the enV one of the best camera phones on the market. The autofocus is especially capable. Another addition: GPS is also included in the phone, though I haven't been able to test this extensively yet.
With the exception of subbing in a MicroSD slot for the old MiniSD slot, most of the other specs are the same. The enV still has EV-DO wireless for high-speed access to the Verizon network and its built-in entertainment options (TV clips and music downloads go relatively quickly).
While I still can't stand Verizon's proprietary, confusing operating system, even that can't impact my love for the enV. At $150 with a contract, it's an insanely good deal in comparison to some smart phones that don't do nearly as much and cost hundreds of dollars more. I'm throwing it into the running for our Last Gadget Standing competition at CES. Give it a spin for yourself and let me know what you think.

i have the LG EnV and i love it. i was going to buy a Motorola Q but found that the EnV suits my needs much better. it also accesses the 3 majot instant messenger services (MSN, AOL and Yahoo). compatible with any e-mail service, GPS, great camera and MP3 player. the inside keyboard and larger screen are another plus. i highly recommend it.
LG 9800 V is the greatest phone, play thing, info gatherer, communicator, etc., ever. Why do people insist on paying new top dollar for a phone that is discontiued, designated antiquated, and sold for 99.99 with a 50.00 rebate when Verizon cleared them out. People are still paying as much as it was valued with out a contract in the first place. Why was it discontinued. Now there is the LG 9900 V which is basically the same except the keys are awkward, at a new improved cost. Common consumers, smarten up.
I have had the en v since christmas and can't seem to put it down. I get tired of phones easisly but you can do many things with the en v and i am still learning new things.I would definatley reccomend it for anyone but get unlimited text messaging..it gets addicitve.
I really like the new EnV I previously purchased the Palm 700wv but that was too complicated and did not fit my life style. The EnV is easy to use stylish and up to date as far as my needs. I have no regets about purchasing this phone. I really love it!!
The camera portion of this phone is not as good as I thought that it would be. I've had less expensive phones that took more quality pictures than the enV does. Also I don't like the fact that I can only use the speaker phone when the flip is open. It would be nice to use the speaker with the flip being closed.
EnV has Yahoo and MSN email, but no compatibility with Yahoo Jukebox . . . if you download an Mp3, it should play on all players . . . right? The Motorola Q has a music media player . . . but no access to Navigator. Email, news, navigator, phone, speakerphone, good photos and video . . . IM, chat . . . that's it for then 9900. But, as a PPC guy, if just one PDA/cellular with Navigator . . . that would clinch the deal.
Okay, called a late bloomer. I just got the Green enV yesterday and I love it! I wi----- had external music controls but other than that no complaints at all!

I too purchased this phone and have found it to be a very good phone for clarity and text messages, but have also had feelings of discontent due to the lack of volume on the ring tone (unless it is opened and on Speakerphone mode) and not being able to apply midi's nor MP3's as ring tones. I also dislike the fact that you can only use it as a music player through V-Cast (which costs airtime & a monthly fee). The Menus are not the easiest to navigate and it is missing alot of functions and quick keys that should be readily available. Like a button or specific menu item for the video camera. That was a nice little puzzle to figure out. Guess that was a factory installed "Game". Finally beat it, but I have not mastered it. I am in the process of returning this phone in attempts to swap it for another enV, thinking maybe I have a defective phone, but if this does not prove to be the case, I will get another phone.
