You know, I don't really mind when so-called "griefers" (hackers whose sole job is to make people miserable) attack, say, Second Life events or political websites. But when they intentionally go after nonprofit groups and target those with medical conditions, well, that's where a line gets crossed.
Last week, Internet vandals attacked an epilepsy sufferers' message board and injected a series of flashing animations into it. Flashing images, as many know, can trigger seizures in epileptics, and that's exactly what happened, with several people reporting that they were affected by the attack and at least one woman saying she suffered her worst attack in a year after being exposed to the flashing image.
Wired is calling the attack a watershed moment, "possibly the first computer attack to inflict physical harm on the victims."
No one has taken responsibility for the attacks, but early evidence points to Anonymous, the anti-Scientology group, as being responsible, according to Wired's Kevin Poulsen (see link below for details). UPDATE: Another theory holds that the attacks were generated by a group trying discredit Anonymous. I make no claim either way. Their attack method was hardly a unique one, using JavaScript to cause a post in a message board to resize a browser window to full-screen size and then redirect itself to another website which displayed the flashing pattern. The Epilepsy Foundation quickly took action to close the site and has repaired its security vulnerabilities since that time.
Though no permanent damage appears to have been done (seizures can sometimes end in death), attacks like this need to be investigated thoroughly and taken with utmost seriousness. Here's hoping those responsible are eventually brought to justice.

azoncrimson - proof read your comments before you send them. artheartscience - I'll bet this isn't the first time you've read irresponsible journalism, right? Glad you're speaking up. For me, with issues like this I'm reminding myself to take the time to find the bottom line. The reason. The trigger. The solution then seems to solve the problem over a broader spectrum for a longer period of time. This is where I look first, when I can.
good luck catching Anonymous.....
No anti-Co$ Anonymous would have perpetrated this action. We are all aware that our beloved Tory has epilepsy and this would be very heinous and disrespectful. The ones at fault should be punished. There was nothing lulzy about this act.
This was done by Scientology to discredit Anon.. Plain and simple. This is typical case of what the Cult calls "Fair Game" as a means to discredit those who oppose them...
Scientology did these attacks. Anonymous is ONLY going after the Cult of Scientology. To learn more, visit www.youfoundthecard.com
hackers are anti-americans ,and should be sentenced to death, for their attacks on americans as a terrorist act.
Looks like there's a bit of Anon in all of us.. Regardless, I find the actions here to not exactly be representative of what Anon truly is as an entity. It's mainly a disorganized heap of people who are for a cause. No, it's rogue hacker(s).
Claiming that "early evidence points to Anonymous, the anti-Scientology group, as being responsible" is libel. There is no affiliation between those protesting Scientology's harmful methods and those who instigated this attack. The Anonymous that protests Scientology does so openly and legally, and reports any individuals seen to have done a crime. If you want to mention Anonymous for ratings then do a properly researched article about Scientology, otherwise leave us out of it.
Sounds like the Scientologists to me. This would be completely within their "Fair Game" tactics...to commit this awful act and then point the finger at Anonymous, who has caused them more grief than any other organization or government. This is not Anonymous....just doesn't fit the MO.
After they spend time in JAIL they should have to be sentenced to 25 YEARS MANDATORY to go work with VICTIMS. UNDER STRICKED SUPPERVISION & GENEROUS CONTRBUTIONS to the Epilepsy Foundation & THEIR VICTIMS!!! They would'nt find it so funny!!! They would have new found RESPECT to THEIR VICTIMS & FOUNDATIONS!!!!!
So very sad that anyone would do this....senseless
hahaha!!!! yes, i love this and please dont call us an anti scientology group, we were operating for years before scientology, and the scientology raids were pathetic anyway. good to know that people are starting to see our true nature! (i personally took no part in the epilepsy raid btw)

I think these people are pathetic. I am an epiletic and I do not understand the concetion with the scientiology church. I do not partically care for that church myself. I have always seeked traditional medicine to treat my epilepsy. I go to those websites for information. It is nice to talk to other epileptics and find out about medications. Doctors do not tell us anything. This disorder is the most misunderstood. I hope this people get locked up for a long time.
