Your Gadgets Are Built to Die

About once a week I get a letter from a reader with a typical refrain: My camera stopped working. My laptop won't turn on. My monitor is broken. Can you help?

Well, probably not. As Wired's Kris Wagner writes, that was supposed to happen. It's all part of the circle of high-tech life, something that is charitably known as "planned obsolescence."

Now there are a couple of competing theories as to why this exists. Wagner is a fan of this neo-conspiracy: Your gadgets all have a switch inside that activates to blow up a critical piece of circuitry the day after the warranty expires. The more generous explanation: Gadgets are made with shoddy components that have a life span that's well known and tends to lie within a fairly small time frame. (That time frame, it turns out, is usually about two years.) Or, in other words, they just don't make 'em like they used to.

There are a lot of pressures on consumer electronics that make this the case. The biggest, which Wagner doesn't really discuss, is price. Manufacturers face intense price pressure in nearly every category, and that inevitably leads to corners being cut along the way. As the industry standardizes on cheaper and cheaper parts, quality converges on a happy medium: Cheap enough so demand keeps up with supply and rugged enough that "this product sucks" web sites don't pop up too much. Besides, as Wagner notes, part of planned obsolescence is consumer choice: People get tired of their old, outdated gadgets and eventually look for any excuse to upgrade. (And, as a side note, I still don't recommend those extended warranties. Not only are they terribly expensive, you'd be surprised how often they don't cover common problems.)

The debate could rage endlessly, and until someone discovers the secret switch that makes all gizmos die, it's not likely to be resolved. Ultimately I throw it to you, the reader, to share your experiences: Got a frustrating tale of gadgets dying, as if on cue? Share it!

Haha, yeah. I bought a Dell Pocket DJ 2 years ago, and a Dell laptop one year ago. The mp3 player has given me so much good grief I feel like Charlie Brown, and the computer is terrible (I don't see why a 512 MB, 1.6 Ghz, well-maintained notebook should lag like a 128 with 500 Mhz). I used to swear by Dell, now I hate it, especially because this computer science major in my English course told me that Dell uses cheap Korean parts. I can believe it.

Computers. MP3 players. Cameras. Whatever. What I really want to talk about is my freakin' dishwasher.

yep, how about those dvd drives?...lets see...I've gone through at least 6 set-top players and 7 dvd drives (mix of cd/dvd, dvd-rw and cd-rw/dvd) since they first came out...i now have 2 Sony set-tops, a 7" portable player and 4 dvd drives. i'd like to know if anyone else has gone through as many as i. How many dvd players/drives have you gone thru? i've also recently had very bad PC experience with Dell. So I just bought a new barebones PC and gutted the Dell parts. Not a single problem since. 4 year old Mitsubishi 55" big screen (projection) died recently. Took 2 weeks for the technician to come out to fix. Had to replace the on/off switch component on the main board. Good thing i bought the 5 year extended warrenty. It paid for itself as the technician said that it was a $500 repair job.

I've had my Gateway M505 for a little over two years now. At just about the two year point the screen went bad, the dvd drive wouldn't open after I got it back from servicing, and recently after I was still having problems with it I figured out a 1 gig memory module went bad. Fortunately I did have the extended warranty and everything got fixed for free. Even the memory module had a lifetime warranty and is getting replaced. I don't think I'll be getting a new gateway laptop anytime soon though.

Sorry, other Dell owners;i must be related to Michael Dell 7 I don't know it. In fall of '04 i ordered a "closeout" Dimension 4600i,(2.8g,hyperthread,1g ram,160 g HD,fx 5200),with Win XP Home,& extended warranty.I added an outboard Pinnacle tuner because i didn't like the so called "extras" that came with Win Media Center,(namely DRM). The dvd-rom quit in May '05,free at home fix in 2 days, the dvd-rw quit this past September, free at home fix in 2 days. This year,i added ram,now 3g;added 200g hd,now 360g,and external 400g hd; and added a fx 5500 w/ an additional monitor. It runs 2 vid apps,IE,photo app,and plays music all at once, when i ask it to. Aside from the annoyance of the drives failing,(not stopping me,i used outboard drives...),i love this frankenstein of mine and i hope to use it for some time to come. Maybe it was built on a Wednesday? P.S. The service person is helpful, and has given great advice.
