You can't turn a corner in any big American city without spotting some zombie-like clown groping at his iPhone. Sure, it's a nifty gizmo, but who knew it would be the ubiquitous touchstone it's become since its release here last year?
But while the iPhone has been a smash hit in the U.S., it's an unabashed flop in Europe, according to the German publication Spiegel. Expectations had initially been just as high there as they were on our shores, but financial analysts say sales "have been far below [those expectations]." How bad? One analyst had expected half a million sales in Q4 2007 in France, Britain, and Germany combined. Actual sales: about 350,000. Figures are even worse for Q1 2008.
What's going on? Spiegel notes two specific things that are impacting sales abroad. First, the iPhone is expensive (an unlocked iPhone in France costs 749 euros, or the current-day equivalent of nearly US$1,200. Service runs up to 119 euros a month ($189). Would you spend more on a phone than you would on a laptop? (In response, both UK and German carriers are slashing prices on the phone.) The other issue: Competition from Nokia. Nokia hasn't been a major player in the U.S. in years, but it still owns its backyard, the European market. With hot handsets at decent prices, Nokia is eating Apple's lunch abroad.
Not mentioned in the story: Performance. Yes, the iPhone is leaps and bounds ahead of anyone else right now in the world of user interface, but it's slow. In Europe, where 3G phones have reigned for years, the pathetic performance on the iPhone must be creating absolutely terrible word of mouth. Imagine a poor Parisian who just shelled out a thousand bucks for his iPhone, showing it off to his friends, only to have them wait impatiently for over a minute while it loads a web page. Not exactly a ringing endorsement when far cheaper phones can do the job with minimal wait.
Apple will respond, one of these days, with a 3G phone, and one has to presume that getting it into European hands is a priority to stem the sales decline and meet that goal of selling 10 million handsets by the end of the year. Of course, we wouldn't mind getting our mitts on it here, too, Mr. Jobs...

Your lucky in europe! you sit back and let everyone else do your dirty work for you. While Americans are fighting a war you sit back and do what? Brag about how great your mobile phones networks are. That is how Hitler tricked you all and we had to come bail you out.
the iphone really isn't that great. i would actually prefer a smartphone like the blackberry over the iphone
O2 ireland has been ripping us off for ages so I am glad they have fallen flat on their arse with the iphone. Hows that for Value Danuta
"Zombie-like clown " LOL! didn't need to read the rest!
Love the iPhone. Hate the hiPrice.
look at the nokia n95 . . . the iphone of europe . . . it is an awesome phone . . . but very few consumers have adopted the unlocked version in the USA . . . one reason . . . the thing is 700+ bucks . . . the 3g iphone will do ok in europe . . . a 3g iphone with a slide out qwerty keyboard would be a world beater!!
I'm not surprised....it is expensive, but I'm waiting for the 3G version before I bite the Apple bait.
in that case . . . i'm off to buy an iphone right now!!
DOH!!! Hasn't anyone from Apple realised yet what the problem is??? and I don't just speak for myself here... The ONLY problem with lack of sales in the UK is that this phone is ONLY available on the Orange network? That decision by Apple was a BRILLIANT stroke of merchandising... Not! I have been a Vodafone customer since the introduction of mobile phones and am not going to change providers just to get an iPhone... Me and millions of others... Think about it Apple. And fire your head of merchandising...
i think the iPhone is pretty neat... not saying its the best phone in the world but i have also never seen or heard of apple claiming it to be. although it is pricey you kinda have to consider that apple isn't really one of them companies that has ever been budget friendly.. there like the Lamborghini compared to other sports cars, yeah they may be made up of the same basic material and be just as fast as other competition or slower how ever you want to look at it but for some reason they cost more.. why is that? its because of the name. Apple products have never been cheap nor do i think they ever will be. Just as soon as everyone thinks the iPhone is played out and everyone has one they'll come out with something new.. something else that will spark your interest for example colors. who knows. and just as everyone is aware there is alternatives to the iPhone so if you cant afford one theres no need to make such a big deal about it. just go out and get the next best thing.. its just a phone..
iphone's slow progress in Europe only sheds a light on how sad the mobile market is in US. The service and the variety on phones is so unique there that Euros can actually turn their nose at the phone, whereas iphone is the most interesting thing US as when it come to cell phones. That and blackberries.
Well, why should I buy an Iphone when I get better things for the same(or less money) on a N95 or P1i..Second thing is that I cannot install any third party application like I do on my P1i or P990. Its jut a bad phone with a user friendly interface and thats all that it has to offer so far. Keep on trying Apple. When it comes to America well what can I say..probably they are thinking: "looks good than it must be good to..so I buy it"..
Please, the article fails to mention that there is a huge market for hacked iPhones already in use in Europe. I have the chance to work with Dutch, Danish, and Norwegian students and they all have iPhones. They got them through websites and hacked them. Trust me there are programs on theirs that would make any iPhone user jealous. They are anxiously awaiting the 3G and local network ready iPhone. When it arrives, their current iPhones will quickly be gifted to there significant other and the sales will pick up.
In Europe the 18 month contract is espensive and the 1GB monthly cap on downloads is outrageous. When companies give the same deal as American companies and Apple issues its new iPhone with 3G and expansion facility, then the sale of iPhones should take off in Europe
I must not live in a "big city" (Buffalo, NY) ... since the phrase "You can't turn a corner in any big American city without spotting some zombie-like clown groping at his iPhone" has no meaning here. Actually I've never even seen an iPhone, and no ... I'm not a luddite! My friends and family are pretty tech savy but none of us get the appeal of the iPhone. It is WAY overpriced for what you get. AND you get locked in to a contract with 1 carrier with limited coverage. Why would someone want that?!? And this is in the US. This is the best that Apple can do? Sorry ... NEXT!
T-Mobile incompatibility is another reason for the lack of success in Europe. Apparently they're big there.
Pretty soon ~ iPhones won't even be the "in" thing. Folks - have you heard of Blue-tooth?
ok. The fine print - I am European, I have been living in Silicon Valley for 15 years, and I travel worldwide 90% of the time. All I can say is that the iPhone is a flop ONLY in Europe. Everywhere else I go, anyone that can afford it, well, has it. So why are Europeans so backwards when it comes to great, easy to use, excellent gizmos ??? Well all I can say is that Europeans, especially the French and German, are OBSESSED with technology: the more complicated the better. Makes them feel smarter maybe. So basically, they will always buy the latest Nokia 3G 500-features-you-never-use-but-hey-it's-so-cool. Also note that from my travels, I ID'ed that the latest status symbol in the EU is the Blackberry. Conclusion. It's like the iPod. Europeans will adopt it, en masse, 5 years after the US. Cheers
I always knew the iPhone would be a disappointment. I really could care less for that phone.

It is absurd to say that 749 Euros is equivalent to $1200. US. That may be the exchange rate, but in Europe a euro buys about what a dollar buys and people get paid similarly to dollar salaries in the US. So Europeans will feel like the iphone costs $749, not $1200.
