They say there's no time like the present, and according to Richard Glikes, executive director of the Home Theater Specialists of America, that goes doubly so for buying electronic gadgetry. The reason? Blame it on China.
Given the state of the U.S. economy, spending your disposable income on high-tech toys may not seem like the best investment in 2008. But if you've already decided to purchase a TV or a new phone, you might be inclined to wait for prices to go down.
That might be a long wait, says Glikes. China is the production center for the vast majority of consumer electronics, and the heyday of cheap labor there may be rapidly coming to a close. For starters, blame the Olympics: In order to clear the air of pollution, many factories are shutting down in June, which could put a damper on the supply of many products. Also, China is tiptoeing towards better relationships with its workers: New labor and worker protection laws have pushed labor costs up 15 percent. The price of many components and metals used in making electronics is also going up.
Perhaps the biggest culprit of all: The falling U.S. dollar. The poor old greenback just doesn't go as far as it used to. Most notably it is falling against the euro, but it's also fallen considerably against the Chinese yuan, about 10 percent in the last year. In other words, if paid in dollars, Chinese companies now earn 10 percent less than they did a year ago due solely to the falling exchange rate. One can imagine that doesn't sit well with them.
In other words: Current prices may simply not be sustainable, and thus price increases may soon be on tap in order to shore up profits. Sure enough, prices are already going up for some LCD products. At the manufacturer level, says Glikes, prices in China are already up from 8 to 20 percent, and U.S. retail prices are soon to follow.Â
Get ready for a bumpy 2008.

We need to face the fact that over the years, we have priced ourselves out of the world market. Who is to blame? Look in the mirror!!!
"22 Posted by kaiserwil9370 on Tue Apr 29, 2008 6:14PM EDT For those that bags on Chinese products. News flash, your ipod is made in China." Do some research! iPod is contracted out to several assembly companies in various countries worldwide and the parts are further subcontracted. True some are made in China, but not all; not even the majority.
Yeah right! BLAME IT ON CHINA! Piracy, drugs, and lots of illegal stuffs come from this country! They can fake lots of good gadgets!!! I hope other countries would do actions on it!
[[[ gomez.patel on Tue Apr 29, 2008 6:31PM EDT Report Abuse bulldog6769@sbcglobal.net fusses as people for their bad writing skills... and then he places YOUR there instead of YOU'RE. Too funny!!!!! ]]] Gomez.patel, I really think you should read his post again and reconsider your critique.
This is probably just the next thing to go up because of the cost of gas/shipping!
Oh brother!!
Just plain silly "average guy" Increasing prices reduces demand and a poor economy reduces demand. Reduced demand doesn't drive prices highter. The *only* thing working in manufacturers favor is the broadcast conversion to digital in 2009. That might help tvs stay relatively warm in late 2008.
LOL, people still think the Chinese Yuan goes up will force the production jobs moving back to US. Will you be forced to buy a Bentley, or a Ferrari, if Toyotas sell at that range? NO, you just move on to something else! There are not only US and China in the whole world.
AN THE GOVERMENT WONDERS WHY WE ARE GOING INTO RECESSION? BECAUSE THE PRCE OF EVERYTHING FROM FOOD TO GAS PRICES ARE GOING UP, WHILE PAY WAGES STAY THE SAME
What a great story! I will plan to make a major electronics purchase very soon. How could the motives of the "executive director of the Home Theater Specialists of America" be anything but honest and in the customer's best interest. Give me a break. If the state of the US economy is bad, do yourself a favor and admit you don't need to buy any more consumer electronics right now. That of course means Glikes' cronies won't be meeting analyst expectations this summer and we wouldn't want to have that.
Hey, maybe this will convince my parents not to keep stalling on getting the new electronics I want them to get!
[[ Posted by soccermaster9678 on Tue Apr 29, 2008 6:56PM EDT and George Bush is definatly not a moron...and if your not for this war you may as well not even consider yourself american..]] That was a perfect example of an "either/or logical fallacy".
oh and to all those intelligent **Pffff** people writing "here's a novel idea: Produce them in the USA to create more jobs for us...blah blah blah"...Do you think what you're saying is a great idea??? Or are you just stupid??? If this stuff was produced in the USA and not elsewhere, you would be paying $10,000 for a 25 inch TV screen! So shutup....You think grocery store prices are high?? imagine if immigrants weren't being exploited! A pound of oranges or strawberries would be $50....I'm not saying exploitation is good, but nobody is putting a gun to their heads... They can quit if they feel they're being exploited.... P.S. Don't spend your rebate checks....lol these articles just make me laugh...want prices to go down?--Stop buying
"Is now the time to buy consumer electronics?" No. The time is BLACK FRIDAY!!!!! I always stay in line for 15-20 hours and buy electronics very cheap.
Your name is "The Working Guy" and yet you say that it is a downfall that "China is tiptoeing towards better relationships with its workers." If you are a "working guy" one would think that it would be a GOOD thing that these workers are getting a better working environment. If making electronics more expensive means a raising these worker lifestyle, I'm all for it. No complaints. As an American, I have enough ----- I don't need.
This is 100% Government propaganda so we Americans go out there and use those "incentives" we are receiving to stimulate the economy. Not a bad idea, but I hate to be misled by the politically driven media. As an electrical engineer working on microelectronic fabrication it is a known fact that electronics become exponentially cheaper as the sales for a given technology grows (fabrication becomes cheaper). A simple example is DVD players. However, because of the weak dollar, we will pay more (relative to what we would pay now) for the newest technology in the coming year or two. So if you want a 50" plasma model "heuw-e334" you will pay less in the future than now, but you will pay more for the "heuw-e335" (when it comes out with new techonology) than you would have paid for the e334 when it first came out

Prices are not going up. This is the governments way of creating a buying frenzy. Last week it was the rice shortage and what did people do? They went out and began hoarding rice. Don't believe everything you read. Bush is trying to get all of you to spend that measly stimulus package to stave off the obvious recession that America is in. Hold onto it, there is a good 18 months of rough roads ahead.
What! Buy American. I bought this new Ford last year and it broke down in less than a year. We need to improve quality in this country so before we talk about others. Starting with NERD CHRIS NULL!!!! BUY GERMAN
