Massive iPhone price cut rumored this summer

Though nothing's official, stories far and wide are reporting that AT&T is preparing to radically cut the price on the Apple iPhone, all the way down to as low as $199, when the new (and still unannounced) version of the phone arrives in stories this summer.

That's a surprise for a number of reasons. First, Apple and AT&T have both stood their ground against subsidizing the phone since its introduction, focusing instead on trying to make as much money on the hardware as possible and attracting a crowd that's not afraid to pay for the luxury. Given that Apple has long claimed that iPhone is selling in the U.S. up to expectations (overseas is a different matter), such a large price cut is unusual.

Of course, Apple famously cut the price on the iPhone once before, after clearly realizing the cost was simply too much for the competitive space it was in. (Don't expect another $100 coupon this time, folks.)

So what's really going on with this? If the price cut rumors are true (and I have no reason to suspect otherwise), maybe this isn't just a ploy to increase sales. In fact, the New York Times' Saul Hansell offers two plausible scenarios: One, that AT&T is planning to increase the price of the unlimited data plan it bundles with the iPhone (Hansell notes that data is $45 a month for a Blackberry vs. just $20 for an iPhone). Two, that Apple may be planning to roll out unlocked iPhones in the U.S. at a premium price.

I strongly suspect the company will not offer an unlocked phone this year, but I think Hansell's argument for a more expensive data plan makes sense. AT&T will probably throw in some more beans to make it seem like you're getting more. One guess: Unlimited text messages, and possibly unlimited voice calling too, all bundled together into one iPhone-centric service plan, much like all the cellular companies have recently begun to offer.

We'll find out the truth of the matter soon... summer is almost upon us, and Jobs must be itching to hit the stage.

The fact that iphone's price will get lower makes me assume that a new model of iphone is gonna come up this summer. I think its intriquing dont you think?? As for the new capabilities of the new varation iphone it will probably be third generation and have embedded GPS. Personally I believe that it wont be thicker because until now it is apple policy to keep the size and desing of its successively products same to a great extend with previous variations of the product. You can easily figure that out by apple computers. Hope you found that interesting.. Bye folks..

I want a iphone I just refuse to pay $400 for any phone I don't care wat company made it. With the economic so low and unemployment rate so high, how could anyone afford to buy it? Its a waste of money because there going a new, better version of the iphone. Why can't is everything so darn expensive, as if money falls from the sky!!!!!!

I'm waiting for the new iPhone to come out this summer and have saved the money to buy one, but if AT&T increases the price for unlimited data from $20 to $40 or more, then forget it. Think about it... It's easier to save the money and make a one time payment of $500 for the iPhone with $20 per month for unlimited data, rather than paying $199 for the iPhone and $40+ dollars per month for unlimited data. $20/month is somewhat affordable for the average person, but $40+/month is just too much to factor in with all the other bills you have to pay each month. IF or WHEN unlimited data prices are increased, I suggest that everyone protest the price increase for unlimited data on the iPhone by simply NOT purchasing an iPhone until the prices are reduced. In fact switch carriers if you really want to get your point across to AT&T. For only $30 a month you can sign up for Sprint's SERO plan which includes unlimited data, and unlimited texting. It's a great alternative if AT&T prices get out of hand. www.sprint.com/sero/

ahh.....I knew there was a good reason I didn't go for a blackberry switch last month..if it does go down $200 then I can live with that :)

Or that means the rumored new revision will stay at the old price and you will be able to get the old version at a bargain.

What I can say with certainty is that when I had my introduction to the iPhone (sister's) it was one of those tech items that was so incredible, the words "gotta have one" bolted into my mind after just a couple of minutes of checking out the features & design. Just an amazing device that has obviously brought change to the entire industry. Any time a company's product so radically changes the competitive landscape, you know it's special. The "Next Big Thing", as they say in Silicon Valley, was delivered again by Apple, just as I have come to expect.
