The Nintendo Wii remains the hottest selling console on the market, having shipped over 24 million units since its launch in November 2006. That's nearly double the PS3 and 5 million more than the Xbox 360, though the Xbox has been on the market for twice as long.
But behind the success of the Wii lies a dirty secret, says GameFunk: That very few quality games are being made for the console. In fact, if you look at the aggregate reviews, most of the games suck. Sure, Wii has some standout titles (Super Mario Galaxy is a classic, one of my favorite games in recent years), but most of the great games have come from Nintendo itself, not from third-party developers.
GameFunk's chart (scroll down a bit) is telling: According to GameRankings' reviews (which are drawn from major reviewing outlets), 26% of titles for the Xbox 360 were ranked as good (8 out of 10 or higher), and 33% of titles for the PS3 were ranked as good. On the Wii, just 11% got a good rating, measuring just 20 games total, four of which were ports of ancient PS2 or GameCube games.
The numbers hold up just as well at Metacritic. Visit the Wii page and you'll see a sea of yellow (mediocre) and red (bad) games in the "upcoming and recent releases" section on the left side of the page. As I write this there are only eight titles in the green (75 out of 100 points) or above. The 360 has 18 "good" picks to choose from.
What's going on here? For some reason, the creators of quick-buck shovelware titles have focused on the Wii. GameFunk notes that the "for all ages" marketing is what primarily predisposes developers to target the Wii, but I think there's somewhat less to it than that: The Wii is simply becoming a victim of its own success. The Wii is a phenomenon that now dominates the market. Why develop for the PS3 when you instantly attract twice the audience with a Wii game? The fact that Wii games take a fraction of the resources to develop (since they require only basic graphics work and gameplay is often simplistic) seals the deal.
Will Nintendo start to crack down on junk games and start enforcing quality control? Right now, Nintendo is relishing its position at the top of the charts, a place it hasn't been in over a decade. It's easy to say that responsibility lies with Nintendo to police the games on its console, but, really, if people are willing to buy a Hannah Montana game, how can Nintendo legitimately say no?

Just because the games are not bloody and violent dose not make them bad games. I think that it is great that there is a game system that has been mainly focused on childrens games.
I did not read all 5 pages of posts, but from what I saw, the mark has been missed. Nintendo has long produced games that were terrible. A major part of what they do is accept almost any title for their system. Where Sony and Microsoft (and Sega in the past) were more discrinate towards the games that were put on thier systems. Nintendo throws as much against the wall as they can, and then they see what happens. Not a good thing or bad thing, folks just need to check out reviews.
I would rather just stay with my PS2. It has a quite massive amount of games available... and it's just all around better.
you could say the same thing for the 260 when if first came out.... sell consoles and the games come quickly after...
I never intended to buy any addl games anyway.... I spend all my Wii time on the tennis, which is AWESOME!!!! That one game is worth every penny I spent on the console. Next I'm buying Fit.
WHO CARES!!! I HAVE a Wii I enjoy just about all of my MANY games. I have Guitar Hero III, Super Mario Galaxy, SUPER SMASH BROTHERS BRAWL! AND MORE! I have NOTHING against the Wii and neither should you.

And what game can you swing a controller and actually replicate the movements of the video game's object with the same movement as intended when you are really playing something in real life? Wii's secret, BTW. Rock on Wii! We needed to become more virtual in our video game realities. I hope the "rest" of the pack updates their games to this simple guiding success "secret" of the Wii's system. And I hope someday we'll all be actually virtually in a video game, and you know what? Wii led the way. Loud applause for you Wii, you deserve it!
Until I get Big Brain Academy-Wii Degree and Wii-fit, I will stick with Wii Sports, Wii Play, Mario Kart, Mini Desktop Racing, and all our game cube games. I also will stick with my DS and all the games I have for it. I like games which do not require all day or a crowd to play them. Long live mini games. Now if Nintendo will come out with Flash Focus and Brain Age Wii (not Three), I will be a happy boy.
i have to agree and dissagree with this. I agree that the Wii does not have a ton of titles that appeals to the 18-30 gaming market, and thats what this article is critisizing. The segment of major gamers, young adults, may not get their moneys worth out of wii, but the thing about PS3 and 360 is they have no market for 16- or 40+, the wii does, which makes the wii a stronger system because it appeals to a broader audience. Wii is used in nursing homes, my 50+ year old mom has never played a game system until wii, the wii has tons of titles for kids. This article just shows a one minded track and not seeing the major benefit of the system.

Sorry, but you are missing the point, a lot of wii owners actually own other consoles (ps2 or xbox, they just want the wii experience...........and that is, well, priceless. loleeofa
