American Airlines to charge $15 for first checked bag

American Airlines is so deeply troubled (compounded by the crushing effects of inflated oil prices) it's now come to this: You'll have to pay 15 bucks to check your first piece of baggage when you choose it to fly the increasingly hostile skies.

This week American said it would axe about 12 percent of its flight schedule, layoff an undetermined number of workers, and retire some 50 planes (which had already been grounded for faulty wiring). The $15 bag fee comes on top of all of that and appears to be the only change the airline is making to actually generate more revenue.

The move comes a mere matter of days after many airlines put into place their plans to charge extra (usually $25) for a second checked bag. United's plan, announced in February, went into effect on May 5. As expected, other airlines rapidly jumped on that bandwagon shortly thereafter.

As yet, no other major airline has followed American in its first-bag fee scheme. The rest of the industry is probably just waiting to see if travelers start rioting in the terminal. Naturally, many expect that flyers will simply resort to trying to jam more luggage into the overhead bins in order to try to beat the fee.

Maybe a spot of good news for travelers: These fees are getting high and pervasive enough that they've raised the interest of the government, which says it will soon begin requiring airlines to disclose bag check fees in advertising and during the ticket buying process.

That's just ridiculous. People do anything for money, even when it comes down to just plain stupid. This will surely hurt their business, as there's going to be others out there avoiding AA b/c of extra charges that aren't necessary. Our country is so dependent on other countries to function we're going out of our minds when one is taking advantage of us. We need to STOP completely using gas/diesel fuels and switch over to something else NOW so our economy can go back to normal. http://ExecutiveHomeBody.com

Charges are charges - As a long-time loyal multimillion mile American traveler, I am annoyed. Don't usually check bags - why not charge $25 more per ticket as a fuel surcharge or call it an "oil price offset?" Economics are pretty simple revenues must exceed expenses to equal profit. All airlines are trying to figure this one out. I actually think airlines should charge a fee for CARRY-ONS! 1 bag fitting under the deat - $0; bag into overhead - $25.00! It would definitely speed up everything from security to boarding.

How about charging by the lb if they are concerned carrying extra weight.

Just think, flying used to be fun, now it's a real production - an expensive one at that. I think charging by the LB might be a good idea. I'm not sure that everyone would agree but it would encourage those who are over weight to think twice about eating a half-dozen bean borritos before boarding.

AA has systematically reduced its workforce over the last 7 years. It has fired, retired, or laid off its higher paid experienced management team and replaced it with lower paid, inexperienced management. Upper management keeps getting MILLIAN dollar bonuses. The Union workers are without a contract and simply don't care. The gap between management and Union is at an all time high. So, what does this mean to the flying public? If the front line work force (Union/Management) doesn%

I booked AA for my honeymoon coming up in Sept. I just hope they don't go out of business or jack up too many prices before then. Eek! I'm taking my luggage on the plane there but I'm definately having my hotel ship back any thing I buy while on vacation to avoid having to pay for a 2nd checked bag.

I don't object to being charged more due to rising fuel prices. But come on, airlines, be honest about it and *raise the ticket prices* instead of adding on these sneaky fees. You may think you are being clever, but in reality you are just p!$$ing off your customers!

tmoaztech - swa gets you there safe and sound just like the other airlines. why pay twice as much for a ticket to have a special seat number on it. there are few airlines i will fly by choice. the list doesn't include aa, usair, united, and rarely delta. the other airlines all appreciate me and the employees are much nicer. swa companion pass (read elite flyer) for 7 years. marriott platinum preferred (top 3%). my preferred travel partners.

My gawd this is an outrage. So we can't check liquids and now we can't check bags. This should be illegal unless the government relaxes it's liquids ban. I mean my gawd. Why can't we carry liquids on the fricking plane? All passengers should immediately consider flying a different airline. If you can book a different airline, do it.

Please pass this on that "drinks" and I think food, all kinds, purchased in terminals that is the part of the airport "before" going through security is considered THE SAME AS FOOD AND DRINK BROUGHT IN FROM OUTSIDE. The terminal they call is at the gates food courts and that is after security checks. Happy flying everyone! Kathie from Tampa, FL.
