Last year, Microsoft announced that millions of Xbox 360 consoles were at risk of failing, but didn't say what was wrong with them. It did say that the repairs would cost about a billion dollars to fix, however.
EETimes says it's uncovered the reason for the failure. (The story's headline says it has found out the "truth about last year's Xbox 360 recall," but in reality there was no real recall, just an extension of the warranty and a warning that failures were possible.) That reason: Microsoft decided to design its own graphics chip in conjunction with a Taiwanese semiconductor shop in order to save a few bucks rather than pay a graphics company to do the job. The repair: Go back to ATI, says EE Times, and get them to fix it.
Microsoft's CPU design appears to have failed because it dissipates too much power and heat into the console, causing other components to fail. But much of that is conjecture, as Microsoft has never publicly explained the reasons for the system failures.
Microsoft has acknowledged only a 3 to 5 percent failure rate in the past, but third-party estimates have claimed up to 15 (SquareTrade) or even 30 percent (EBGames) of all units have died in their lifetime. It's impossible to know how serious the problem really is, but that 1 billion dollar figure is the most telling data point.
EE Times also notes that Microsoft isn't the first company to try to deal directly with an offshore chip foundry in an attempt to save money on expensive CPU design and licensing: It's a trend that has affected all electronics businesses in the last few years. It may however be a trend that's on the wane, as such failures aren't unique to Microsoft: Nokia, for example, has abandoned the process of designing its own chips.
How has your console held up? Are these failures causing you to stray away from purchasing an Xbox 360? Fire away in the comments below.

Oh, and to all you PS3 people claiming they have no problems with anything, I take it you haven't gotten any updates??? I'll put my xBox 360 Elite updates up against your buggy PS3 updates right now!! Gotta love those PS3 bricks! HAHAHAHA! http://tech.yahoo.com/blogs/patterson/24451;_ylt=AgYXX.JF_AdoQJOVKpmIzokFLZA5
OK children - and I can say that at 52 years... whining about "my console is better than yours" is a puerile tactic that only proves a lack of intellect. So onward... I own an orignal xBox, a first-gen xBox 360 and a xBox Elite. Also in the family: PS1, PS2, Wii and various Nintendi. Guess what?... no problems with any of them.
Oh, yeah, and as for "it play's blu ray discs too"....if you want to pay $5-$10 more for what amounts to the same movie, be my guest. But I wouldn't necessarily include that in with what makes the PS3 "better". Blu ray is what, better graphics? And? Last time I checked, we bought game consoles for gameplay, not for which dvd's it could play. I might be willing to jump on the blu ray bandwagon if i got something for the extra money. Like additional scenes or something. But you're gonna have to do bette than high def graphics to impress me.
My Xbox let me down 3 times to date (knock on wood for any further failures). I hate Microsoft customer service(trying to make me pay for shipping to repair something i bought 7 months earlier). If i didn't like Xbox live so much, i would have got rid of my 360 for a PS3 a long time ago.
The person in charge of editing the blogs(assuming there is such a person) doesn't like intelligent postings. I've tried to post this twice now, and It hasn't appeared yet, third times the charm. The main problem is the consumer, not the console. If you hook it up to a surge protector, there is a fluctuation in energy going to the console, causing the red rings. This is because of the BUILT-IN surge protector in the power supply... People who have gone through more than one are friggin stupid! Have you considered that maybe it is the owner and not the console? If you treat your five hundred dollar investments like that, I hate to see your love life... Treat your consoles like they should, and they will last.
But the trade off for the PS3 is that the online is a headache and it doesn't have the killer exclusives that it used to. Consoles are online and that is Microsoft's strong point. My 360's disc drive failed and I used a third part to repair mine and now the motherboard melted. :( But I'm going to buy another one because they are much sturdier now and I need to play Halo 1+2+3, and COD4 and Blue Dragon and Viva Pinata and all of the other games on the console.
I love my 360. I have had 2 systems total so far but the reason the first one died was because I forgot to unplug it when we had a really bad thunderstorm here. I sent it to Microsoft and they sent me a brand new (yes, brand new not refurbished) console and a free 1 month of xbox live. The 360 is so much better than the PS3!
I will never buy another XBOX. Playstation im coming back home.

Microsoft sends you this plain white box to return it to them for warranty repairs. No logos on the box. The UPS folks know exactly what's in the box. They say they get a few a day! I bought a PS3 much better machine! I would recommend to anyone to get the PS3. It plays Blu-ray discs too!
