Why all those Xbox 360s croaked

Last year, Microsoft announced that millions of Xbox 360 consoles were at risk of failing, but didn't say what was wrong with them. It did say that the repairs would cost about a billion dollars to fix, however.

EETimes says it's uncovered the reason for the failure. (The story's headline says it has found out the "truth about last year's Xbox 360 recall," but in reality there was no real recall, just an extension of the warranty and a warning that failures were possible.) That reason: Microsoft decided to design its own graphics chip in conjunction with a Taiwanese semiconductor shop in order to save a few bucks rather than pay a graphics company to do the job. The repair: Go back to ATI, says EE Times, and get them to fix it.

Microsoft's CPU design appears to have failed because it dissipates too much power and heat into the console, causing other components to fail. But much of that is conjecture, as Microsoft has never publicly explained the reasons for the system failures.

Microsoft has acknowledged only a 3 to 5 percent failure rate in the past, but third-party estimates have claimed up to 15 (SquareTrade) or even 30 percent (EBGames) of all units have died in their lifetime. It's impossible to know how serious the problem really is, but that 1 billion dollar figure is the most telling data point.

EE Times also notes that Microsoft isn't the first company to try to deal directly with an offshore chip foundry in an attempt to save money on expensive CPU design and licensing: It's a trend that has affected all electronics businesses in the last few years. It may however be a trend that's on the wane, as such failures aren't unique to Microsoft: Nokia, for example, has abandoned the process of designing its own chips.

How has your console held up? Are these failures causing you to stray away from purchasing an Xbox 360? Fire away in the comments below.

I always wanted a 360 after I impulsively bought a ps3 for way too much but I guess it was better. I wanna know if the new ones are failing too? If not I might buy one cause the games are little better on xbox

I bought my xbox when it came out and it's still running strong. I average 4 hours a day play time on it and haven't had a problem with anything other then the headset to date. I've owned both playstations and xbox's and I'll never go back to Sony. Ever. Wouldn't take a PS3 for free.

My brother has the XBOX 360 and since he got it it has been nothing but problems. The first few months it worked fine but once it just wouldnt turn on, we called Microsoft and sent it to the for repairs. It was a hassle to send it and then wait for the shipment. When we thought everything was fine, it got messed up AGAIN. He got the little red flashing light that they said they would fix free for allt hose who had that problem. SO...we sent it back. Now it doest work again! He just graduated 8th grade and my family all pitched in and got him a PS3! he couldnt be happier. SONY is great at video systems..Microsoft should concentrate on their computers, it seems the video games system field is not for them.

I have both systems and have to say the ps3 is a better system. When the next gen xbox is released i hope they use a cell processor instead of a multicore. If they do not switch they will be limited in the future and with the cell processor your options are limitless. After all the worlds fastest computer now holds a cell processor which is in the ps3 and not the multicore anymore and you can find that article on tech news. David King as far as sales go the ps3 has outsold 360 and wii in europe and the us the last 3 months.

The PS3 is truley junk. If you were nto happy with the xbox 360 you are not going to be happy with the Ps3. There lack of game content, the help lines are not very good. The online game content is vastly supioer to the PS3. Sony is stuck in the mindset of the PS2. Gamers don't play online very much. Make the PS3 just like the PS2 and gamers well fly to it. To bad sony they did not. This is why the xbox sell more units then your Ps3 I had to send out my xbox only once. The service people were really nice. Haven't a problem with it since

davidscottking1978 the PS3 came with a 3 year full warranty the day their system was released so that just shows that they stood behind the quality of their system right from the start.

The statstics show a 30% failure rate on the 360 but i think it is more than that being that people are having to send their systems in 3 times over.

I am on like my 5th 360 in a year. I don't know what I do to these darn things, but they die on me. I also have a 360 elite, and it is running fine with no problems. (knock on wood) No matter what ALWAYS get the extedned warrenty!!! It has saved my but every single time.

it would be nice to know when you all purchased and had the rings of death for these consoles. As i think the number of faulty 360's has gone down lately.. i bought an elite the 1st day it came out april 29th 2007, no problems ever. I have mine in the vertical position, but just for precautions i have a little external fan blowing right onto the console vents.

I am on my 3rd 360, Gamestop told me that if this one croaks I can't use the warranty I bought with them, instead I have to send it back to MS? Anyway, if this one does go, I might stop playing games for a while. Also, from what I have seen, the 360 is definately the best system overall for games, but obviously having send your system back, even at no cost, is a HUGE pain. That means you might not have your system for weeks (it took them over 4 weeks to send me my first one back).

Ive been using my 360 ever since it came out, not one problem and i play way to effin much.. lol. from about 30 hours to 50 hours a week on average ( i know i need help) and it runs strong to this day. LONG LIVE MICROSOFT~!

I just received my third unit in 1.5 years. I believe that all units will eventually fail. My concern is that they will keep sending me refurbished faulty units until my 3 year warranty runs out. I think they should replace all defective units with the new units that work. Otherwise I may have to sue them to buy me a PS3 when my warranty runs out.

I went through 4 XBox 360 units. The first 3 would put a ring on the discs and they became unreadable. The fouth had the video go out. Could hear sound, but not see the game. I brought it back and replaced it with an Elite system. Haven't had problems with it in the first 6 months. So far, so good. THE BEST MONEY I EVER SPENT WAS THE 2 YEAR EXTENDED WARRANTY FROM BEST BUY FOR $80. No sending the unit to Microsoft for repair. For the first year, just bring it in to Best Buy and they give you the choice of getting another or switching to a different game system. (PS3 or whatever) No hassels, no worries. Best value I have ever gotten for $80. I will never, ever purchase a game system without the extended warranty!!
