Why all those Xbox 360s croaked

Last year, Microsoft announced that millions of Xbox 360 consoles were at risk of failing, but didn't say what was wrong with them. It did say that the repairs would cost about a billion dollars to fix, however.

EETimes says it's uncovered the reason for the failure. (The story's headline says it has found out the "truth about last year's Xbox 360 recall," but in reality there was no real recall, just an extension of the warranty and a warning that failures were possible.) That reason: Microsoft decided to design its own graphics chip in conjunction with a Taiwanese semiconductor shop in order to save a few bucks rather than pay a graphics company to do the job. The repair: Go back to ATI, says EE Times, and get them to fix it.

Microsoft's CPU design appears to have failed because it dissipates too much power and heat into the console, causing other components to fail. But much of that is conjecture, as Microsoft has never publicly explained the reasons for the system failures.

Microsoft has acknowledged only a 3 to 5 percent failure rate in the past, but third-party estimates have claimed up to 15 (SquareTrade) or even 30 percent (EBGames) of all units have died in their lifetime. It's impossible to know how serious the problem really is, but that 1 billion dollar figure is the most telling data point.

EE Times also notes that Microsoft isn't the first company to try to deal directly with an offshore chip foundry in an attempt to save money on expensive CPU design and licensing: It's a trend that has affected all electronics businesses in the last few years. It may however be a trend that's on the wane, as such failures aren't unique to Microsoft: Nokia, for example, has abandoned the process of designing its own chips.

How has your console held up? Are these failures causing you to stray away from purchasing an Xbox 360? Fire away in the comments below.

yeah it is ridiculous, ive had 3 xboxes. 1 standard one and then it got the death rings. then i got the elite thinking they solved all the kinks. nope. it stopped allowing me to got online a month after. luckly i had the warranty. now this elite's fan likes to stay on even after i cut power to the system. its crazy. microsoft has REALLY fell off the ball. especially with the vista stuff. they could you know try and at least do ONE thing right.

Yo, did Atari design their chip? Mine failed last year.

Is anyone seeing a pattern? Windows ME, Xbox 360, Windows Vista... It must still be profitable to issue their products early, then perform repairs and maintenance. I can't imagine they'd be stupid enough to keep doing it on accident.

Wow...I'm sure glad my preference lies in the Atari 2600. At least that console I can repair myself with little grief. MS just keeps digging that grave of theirs deeper and deeper.

The Xbox 360 is not a bad console. Surprisingly it has less problems than most Sony consoles do, however Microsoft is the only company this is actually willing to replace your console for FREE. The extended warranty for the Red Ring of Death was a genius move for the company. Can Sony say the same? Do they really care about the customer?

I have a part time job at BB store. We had a 360 on display, after 3 months it had the rings of death. We sent it back to Microsoft and set up a new display. 2 days later it had...rings of death!!! 2 days! must be a record lol we are on our 3rd 360, so far we are lucking out. Seeing this happen 1st hand has convinced to not buy a 360. I'm not a fan of the PS3 but at least they don't get returned in large numbers like the 360.

My 360 has worked for nearly two years but i only play it about 2 to 4 hours a week. I have heard of many die hard gamers including my little brother who have experienced the red ring of death. PS3 is a better system but if your really into shooters 360 is the way to go. Many 360's are also annoyingly loud but xbox live is really cool. PS3 has been coming out with a lot more games recently.

That's crazy! I've had my PS2 for over 3 years and I bought it used! That's certainly saying something. I'm glad I didn't invest in the Xbox 360. It was too dang expensive and now half of them don't work.

I love the xbox, but no more. Bought a PS3.

Well I never got a next gen console. Once they came out I was just like "How they tryin' to play me with $400? There's no way I'm paying that much for a console that has problems operating anyway. Instead, I did what any guy in the hood would do, I went to the local video game store, paid the guy $100 to mod my XBOX with 360 Hardware so it can play 360 games, and bought all the games that came out like H3, Madden, and GOW.

We won our 360 in the Mt. Dew - Every 10 Minutes contest. It arrived the weekend before the public launch date and we have not experienced any problems. Now I'm going to go knock on some wood.

I have had my 360 elite for almost a year now. I run it in a room that stays about 90 degrees and have never had a single problem with it, even when my brother left it on all night. I don't know what the heck you are doing to kill your systems.

My son has been asking for xbox 360, because he wants to play Halo. I am not too happy about it.

I have a Xbox 360 that I purchased the day or release. It has NEVER acted up once, the same with my original Xbox. Wish I could say that about my PS1 and PS2, both have died at least once and get less use then my Xbox.
