Last year, Microsoft announced that millions of Xbox 360 consoles were at risk of failing, but didn't say what was wrong with them. It did say that the repairs would cost about a billion dollars to fix, however.
EETimes says it's uncovered the reason for the failure. (The story's headline says it has found out the "truth about last year's Xbox 360 recall," but in reality there was no real recall, just an extension of the warranty and a warning that failures were possible.) That reason: Microsoft decided to design its own graphics chip in conjunction with a Taiwanese semiconductor shop in order to save a few bucks rather than pay a graphics company to do the job. The repair: Go back to ATI, says EE Times, and get them to fix it.
Microsoft's CPU design appears to have failed because it dissipates too much power and heat into the console, causing other components to fail. But much of that is conjecture, as Microsoft has never publicly explained the reasons for the system failures.
Microsoft has acknowledged only a 3 to 5 percent failure rate in the past, but third-party estimates have claimed up to 15 (SquareTrade) or even 30 percent (EBGames) of all units have died in their lifetime. It's impossible to know how serious the problem really is, but that 1 billion dollar figure is the most telling data point.
EE Times also notes that Microsoft isn't the first company to try to deal directly with an offshore chip foundry in an attempt to save money on expensive CPU design and licensing: It's a trend that has affected all electronics businesses in the last few years. It may however be a trend that's on the wane, as such failures aren't unique to Microsoft: Nokia, for example, has abandoned the process of designing its own chips.
How has your console held up? Are these failures causing you to stray away from purchasing an Xbox 360? Fire away in the comments below.

Went through one 360 and it took 3 weeks to get back! At least I could still play Halo 3 and Gears of War when I got it back.
i have had no problems with my xbox 360 but then i did buy the most expensive of the xbox's and the only fault it did find is the door for putting your discs in sometimes you got to give it a tap apart from that all well touch wood
ok mr. EE. doubt it could be as simple as a heat sink issue. that would have been an easy fix. hardware was probably inefficient by design so it produced a lot of heat. heat sinking wont reduce the amount of heat generated by the processor, just how it gets dissipated. the processor also wasnt what failed. it messed with other components.
I had my xbox for about a year and a half before the x-clamps failed(Red Ring Of Death). It cost me $80 to get it fixed. I didn't mind, the xbox is worth it. Halo 3, Mass Effect, Bio Shock, fable 2(not yet released), must I say more? Also, mycrosaft has released the new smaller chipset, this means that the heating problem is almost nothing on all new sysemts.
blessednluvd and anyone else who is having problmes. try 360pros.com they fixed my xbox for less than mycorsoft would have and I had it back within a week!
Well i'm glad I waited to buy my PS3. Like all others I saw the problems xbox 360 was having from friends. My advice is that you buy it from BestBuy with the warranty and just bring it back to them for a new one or just get your money back that way it saves you alot of headaches. ....PS for life take care...
I was considering buying a 360 but now rethinking it
My first Xbox 360 pooped on me and the only thing that happens is I get a flashing red light in the front. Totally uncool. I ended up getting the warranty plan with the next 360 I purchased. Let's hope it breaks down now since i bought the Xbox 360 twice.
My boyfriend is a gamer. He plays them for hours and really loved the xbox 360's. We have playstaions, nintendos, wii's, etc. I went and got him an x-box 360 for christmas. Within three months the red ring of death appeared. Even though he loved the graphics he swore to never buy another one. We spend a lot of money on the consoles and put our trust into the companies that make them. We expect quality and durability. Basically because they decided to go cheap on making this console and it didn't work, they lost our cofindence and thousands of others. Thanks!
no problems here....love my console
There isanother reason why the 360s keep on overheating. if you have a hard drive in your 360 it covers the main vents and it heats up faster. I dont have a hard drive but when a friend of mine let me borow his my 360 overheated after a couple hours of continueus(did i spell that write?) play.
Ya know, you could possibly water cool the system. I've seen people do it (youtube) with regular water cooling kits for computers. Put a block on both the cpu and gpu and you'll never have a problem again (except your warranty)
its the heat that kills them, just have a fan blowing on the system, problem solved,
Yeah alot did croak but alot didnt or i guess havent so far. but to those ps3 lovers bashing xbox. your games fail. nuff said
the only reason i bought a 360 is because it was so much cheaper than the ps3 when it was first released. you get what you pay for! (and yes, my xbox broke and I had to send it in.. :) Got it back though and it works great.
OK I"m a MOM. My boys 17 and 13 tell me the xbox is broken and to send it in. They always have it wrapped in towels to heat up. Go figure! Where can I send it for an honest evaluation and to fix it?
My 360 has been running fine for 1.5 years. No fans no towel tricks, nothing, just keep it dust free and clean. I wouldn't get to used to having no problems PS3 people, the system hasn't been out long and PS2's were having problems as much as the 360's are after a couple years. Sadly all companies take shortcuts which lower the reliability of their product, whether it be Sony or Microsoft, or Ford, or Kia.
If your XBOX is out in the open, or you open your cubboard for the shelf that it is stored on, and let the heat out, it should be OK. So far no failure. If it does fail, do you lose all your points, ranks, etc.? when you have to buy or pick up a new XBox?
Mine got fried- is it still under warrenty?

Hey I'm a mom who bought an Xbox 360. Within in 9 months it broke , so my son bought another one and it lasted 9 months. They both had to go in for repairs and only one made it out ...But it came back with the loudest fan I have ever heard. ...All my son s friends had to also buy warranty and be given a brand new x- box 360 , 2 times from Best BUy.. X-Box is a rip off...Company knew console had flaws and still decided to sell it.. And at 300 to 400 dollars each ..company made a treeemendous profit.. and we paid for the company's executives good life..
