Dell charging some customers $50 to downgrade from Vista

Dell won some much-deserved praise for announcing recently that it would continue to offer Windows XP on some of its computers even after Microsoft's June 30 end-of-life date for the operating system, pretty clearly telling the world that the relationship with its customers were more important than its relationship with Redmond.

Apparently that relationship comes at a price, though: If you're a Dell Vostro user, downgrading to XP from Vista will actually cost you quite a bit more. $50, to be exact. Though that's still a huge discount off the $300 list price of an XP Professional disc, it's annoying considering the price you're already paying for Vista if you don't plan to use it.

Various versions of Vista and certain classes of customers are offered "downgrade rights" as part of the Vista license, which legally let you drop back to XP without paying extra. Dell has said it will continue to offer the downgrade option until 2009. On most of Dell's systems, the downgrade is free.

Vostro owners are out of luck, alas, though I suppose Dell would defend the fee as a service charge for the additional work it takes to put XP on these systems. (That's a real stretch, in my mind: Computer builders "image" systems in bulk and don't actually have to go through the process of installing Vista normally, then downgrading it to XP.)

Vostro was most recently in the news when it was revealed that certain UK models had misconfigured keyboards.

One big reason I've stopped buying computers from all major makers. Homemade and Digital Storm are the way to go. Mac's, HP's, Dell's, all that stuff is are huge darn ripoffs.

Unbelievable....just unbelievable. There is not one person I know who will buy a PC with VISTA and they are getting rid of XP. I give up. My next PC will be a MAC.

I have had a Dell for 8 yrs. the trouble with there tech support and there add on's at your expense has earned them the gold star for total jerks. I will never buy another Dell if it was the last computer to be had. Send them all to there tech suport people maybe they then can learn how to speak and deal with there customers. Mac for me as well!!

Personally, I have grown up with windows, understand windows and like windows and the PC in general. I tried Vista, I tried the Apple and they just don't appeal. What happened to a the computer's purpose to be able to run business programs, the internet, e-mail and Microsoft Office and everything else being extras? I like games too but that is NOT the reason for a computer. I've been able to understand every bit of Office since my 2nd grade year, why mess it up? The last 2 decent systems: XP and 98. I still have 98 on one of my PCs.

as far as I am, concerned changing fdrom vista to winxp is an uprade because vista was made for kids and computer illiterate dip----- s. Isold the new puter I bought for next to nothing and bougght the winxp sofdtware and fdixed my old puter so the only thing I up graded was to fix my old puter and et a flat screen monitor.

Vista stinks. We use older software at work & it will not run on Vista. We just bought all new computers so that we could have the latest PC's & get XP. Anyone use the Linix XP? Will it run all the same programs?

Well! I think the MBA's at Dell are pulling a fast one on this oneVostro is produced like the article said, in bulk as an ISO feed or some other Image feed.In my opinion if you have to pay more for XP downgrade, then I would forget about buying that particular model of Dell. Personally if I bought such a system I would dump Windows alltogether and install Linux, well maybe put Vista in the background and run my favorite Linux Distro.

Never had any major problems with Window's based machines that I haven't had with any Mac system I've used, which doesn't make me as anxious as all the Apple shills to swap manufacturers.

keep on building those vista ready pc's ! , after cleaning that cr*p off the hardrive, install you'r xp that you are saving (be it a bought one or a "mod'd" one ;) ) you will have a good running pc seeing that vista needs so much to run it's bloated os. or just run a linux os !

i would rather just get vista. we are all going to HAVE to switch to it eventually.I have had NO problems with my vista system so far.The only thing is that they moved all of the options, and added alot more. Even if you do switch to another manufacterer they all use vista too.(except apple)

No fair...they did this after they've fleeced their customers..like my husband and I, and we live on a fixed income. Getting the computer was a BIG expense, and at the time I thought it was awful for them to charge us extra for an OLDER program. SHAME on them, they should offer refunds to the people who paid for XP.

I bought my step-son a Vostro 1500 back at Christmas time. I did not care for Vista, so at that time you could pick XP instead at no additional cost. I guess Dell has gotten greedy again--Big surprise.

Typical.......if it ain't broke, fix it so it will be. Why not improve Windows XP?? If they think I'm going to trash my scanner and printer because it's not compatable with Vista, their nuts. I'm done with the techno games they play. I cant afford to keep buying this stuff every few years, especially with gasoline and milk over $4.00 a gallon. Make a better computer, make better virus protection programs, make better games.......but leave the basic operating systems alone for cripe sakes
