Dell charging some customers $50 to downgrade from Vista

Dell won some much-deserved praise for announcing recently that it would continue to offer Windows XP on some of its computers even after Microsoft's June 30 end-of-life date for the operating system, pretty clearly telling the world that the relationship with its customers were more important than its relationship with Redmond.

Apparently that relationship comes at a price, though: If you're a Dell Vostro user, downgrading to XP from Vista will actually cost you quite a bit more. $50, to be exact. Though that's still a huge discount off the $300 list price of an XP Professional disc, it's annoying considering the price you're already paying for Vista if you don't plan to use it.

Various versions of Vista and certain classes of customers are offered "downgrade rights" as part of the Vista license, which legally let you drop back to XP without paying extra. Dell has said it will continue to offer the downgrade option until 2009. On most of Dell's systems, the downgrade is free.

Vostro owners are out of luck, alas, though I suppose Dell would defend the fee as a service charge for the additional work it takes to put XP on these systems. (That's a real stretch, in my mind: Computer builders "image" systems in bulk and don't actually have to go through the process of installing Vista normally, then downgrading it to XP.)

Vostro was most recently in the news when it was revealed that certain UK models had misconfigured keyboards.

it is money well spent in my opinion. I went to a "big box" store the other day and there were no computers with XP. This store sells computers from about 18 different manufacturers. Since I could "only" get Vista per the employee, I walked out carrying a Macbook. Wow...I should have made the change years ago. I still love XP, and work on many systems that have it, but I do not see me buying another PC in the future!

I think Microsoft should pull Vista instead of XP from the shelves. Vista wasn't ready when they put in out and it still isn't. Gates does it again. You would think they would have learned from the ME operating system the was junk also. Everyone that uses a windows pc is use to XP and is comfortable with it. I feel that the person buying the pc should have the right to choose the operating system at no extra charge. If the pc makers and windows don't do something like keep XP then I see a lot of new pc's haveing mac on them and windows will have big loss in sales.

I personally will not buy a Mac. Nothing against the system but I am a gamer and there is simply not enough gaming software available. My next PC will be an HP however since Dell doesn't offer wireless networking as a factory installed option on a $2000 computer, but they do offer 3 different dial up modems on the same model. No more Dell for me.

I just recently purchased a mac because of past Microsoft update problems and did not want to take a chance with Vista. So far I love it.

I am just joining the crowd. I have been a IT professional for over 30 years and have grown up with Intel-MS, but I have hit the frustration point with Vista Ultimate and Office 2007 for home. I also will buy a MAC next time. The learning curve cant be much worse.

From what I have seen of Vista on my kids pc's, its pretty awful. I love XP and have it on all my machines. I almost never buy new, but factory refurbs, so XP is there and I will continue to do so. Vista is really pretty awful, hard to believe that they havent done something to improve it.

Dell charging some customers $50 to downgrade from Vista. Correction: Dell charging some customers $50 to UPGRADE from Vista. I purchased a laptop with Vista and it REFUSED to connect to the wireless internet. My XP computers...no problem. I got the runaround with the manufacturer, cable company and Microsoft. They saw it more beneficial to point fingers at each other instead. Shame too because the laptop worked great otherwise. I'll wait till Vista becomes outdated before risking another "downgrade" attempt...

No wonder why MSFT stock has done nothing for 8 years. They release shoddy product after shoddy product but since they have a monopoly, people still bought it. No anymore. Buy AAPL if you want the wave of the future. Eventually, they will cater to small business as well at which point the stock will really skyrocket.

I don't see what is wrong with Vista. The only place it falls back is hardware usage (Vista uses 600mb when idling compared to 300mb on XP) and for some people the looks of it. Otherwise, its a great improvement over XP.

I would say to get an Intel based Mac toss OSX Leopard on it and install windows xp w/ boot camp. You can emulate windows on your mac. remember tho it will only work with a Intel based CPU. heck you can even install vista but i wouldnt even think about that one. ^.^ http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/bootcamp.html

All Apple does is slightly improve on their previous versions. They don't invent when it comes to software.
