No extension: Windows XP D-Day arrives Monday, June 30

After delays, delays, and rumors of more delays, the era of Windows XP has finally reached its final hours. Microsoft has made it official: Monday, June 30 will be the last day Microsoft sells XP to the masses. In fact, some companies have already stopped offering XP as an option on new machines as they prep for the switchover.

Earlier rumors that Microsoft might extend the sales date have proven untrue, as Microsoft has reiterated that, indeed, June 30 will be the final sales date cut-off for the product. That's it. It's a Vista world now.

Loopholes will remain for some PC makers for some months to come, namely those who are building ultra-low-cost computers that aren't powerful enough for Vista. (Though some machines in this class, like HP's Mini-Note, actually come with Vista anyway.) For at least the rest of the year, downgrades remain an option for many PC purchasers too, though you'll have to jump through some hoops, and possibly pay extra, in order to get XP.

As I've written several times (and reassured many of you in email responses), XP fans needn't panic about the loss of XP. Even if you don't have a copy on hand, the product will be available through many channels for years to come (and likely forever), through both retail outlets and the aftermarket. As I type this, nearly 1,000 copies of XP are on sale on eBay, where they usually sell for less than $100.

In other news, Microsoft has recently  pledged to keep supporting XP, including the release of security updates, all the way through 2014. So XP users needn't fret that you'll suddenly be victimized by hackers due to unpatched security flaws. Updates should work exactly as you're used to them currently through the Windows Update system.

/\/\/\ Vista is a huge improvement over XP. There are a number of bugs (to be expected). Those of us who remember the launch of XP can remember all the chaos that caused as well. Vista looks nice, works well and is more functional. This is from a power user who was skeptical at first as well. After a few months though I can say I like it better and there are a number of really great features... once you actually use it. You just afraid of change or are a Mac lover. Either way, don't post if you’re not knowledgeable on the subject.

Would not the order be? 1. Windows 3.1 2. Windows 95 3. Windows 98 4. Windows ME/2000 5. Windows XP 6. Windows Vista This order seems more accurate since I've heard that the next version will be "Windows Seven" on Kim Commando's show last Sunday.

I use Vista and hate it. I would downgrade (wouldn't consider it a downgrade) but I can't afford to spend the money to buy XP. I heard Vista runs best on Mac. Maybe i'll switch to Macintosh. I like a lot of the features on the Macbook pro. And the money I spent so far on Vista is more then the cost of a Pro.

I own a computer repair store in my town. I see and hear of people having more problems with Vista than I hear good reports. Vista IS a resource hog. A lot of software is incompatable so my customers are having to purchase all new software just because of Vista. It does not run as well as XP. I had a customer that bought a new computer with Vista on it, we bumped the RAM up to 2 gig and the machine still crawled. We reformatted the machine, loaded XP and the pc flies now. If Microsoft would just take the time to get an OS right before forcing it on the public, you wouldn't have as many people that HATE their OS's. Vista is comparable to the Windows ME debaucle IMO. Eventually they will probably get Vista running better but why make the general public suffer with poorly written software in the meantime.

I for one am glad to see XP go away. Although it was a great operating system back in the old days, Vista is a huge improvement and is way faster and has far more features than XP. It looks so much better to, I love the animation and all the ultimite extrtas, Thease things could never be handled by XP. I Have used Vista Ultimite 64bit for two years now (startad with the beta version, RC1). The only problem that i came across is is device drivers, but the device manufactures are to blame for that one. Now most driver issues are fixed. OIn the exact same system i run XP and Vista, the only difference is the hard drives. On Xp I use a 10,000rpm raptor (very fast)and with Vista64 I use a7,200rpm Samsung. Even with a slower HD, Vista still responds faster. It must be the 64bit structure. I can just imagine what it would do on a 10,000rpm raptor.

Microsoft is definitely making a mistake by stopping the sale of Windows XP. Especially with problems with their Vista product.

Seems to me with all the problems I've heard with Vista, this is a huge mistake. Too many people have computers that are 5 years older or more and simply cannot handle Vista's technology. It is time to give the American people a break and allow them to enjoy the technology they have, rather than try to force new and better software/etc. every time they turn around. You buy a new computer, and a better one is out in 6 months. You get your hands on Windows, and it has already been replaced with a new version by the time you unwrap the box. People are dizzy trying to keep pace with it all. (Especially people like me who know as much about computer operations as they do about biotechnology.) Rest, Microsoft, rest. PLEASE!

I use and like XP. I wish I could buy or get a non-MS version or clone. Some of my specialized software doesn't work easily or at all with XP. I also need a paralell port on my computer and also use paralell data cables. I just have to use XP for some of the specialized stuff I do. CAD/CAM/CNCcontroller. Vista is probably great if you don't have $$$ invested in software that won't run on it. We can al;ways hope for a service pack that will make the fixes. Jack

I really wish they'd fix Vista before doing this. I recently bought a really awesome HP laptop, but since it has Vista on it, it runs as slow as my last laptop.

They would have been better off to discontinue Vista. It's a joke. XP is much more stable and and reliable.

This is the beginning of the end for Microsoft. Bill gates retiring; XP being retired. If I had any money I would put it in Apple and Linux stock. If those two companies were smart they would take advantage of this and devastate Microsoft. I am an XP enthusiast and have tested various systems with XP and Vista. XP out performs Vista on every winbench test I have preformed.

I wonder if most problems with Vista stem from inadequate video acceleration. Up through XP, work oriented machines could get by with a fast CPU,enough memory and intergrated graphics. Vista's graphics load is heavy enough that everyone needs a capable graphics card.
