No extension: Windows XP D-Day arrives Monday, June 30

After delays, delays, and rumors of more delays, the era of Windows XP has finally reached its final hours. Microsoft has made it official: Monday, June 30 will be the last day Microsoft sells XP to the masses. In fact, some companies have already stopped offering XP as an option on new machines as they prep for the switchover.

Earlier rumors that Microsoft might extend the sales date have proven untrue, as Microsoft has reiterated that, indeed, June 30 will be the final sales date cut-off for the product. That's it. It's a Vista world now.

Loopholes will remain for some PC makers for some months to come, namely those who are building ultra-low-cost computers that aren't powerful enough for Vista. (Though some machines in this class, like HP's Mini-Note, actually come with Vista anyway.) For at least the rest of the year, downgrades remain an option for many PC purchasers too, though you'll have to jump through some hoops, and possibly pay extra, in order to get XP.

As I've written several times (and reassured many of you in email responses), XP fans needn't panic about the loss of XP. Even if you don't have a copy on hand, the product will be available through many channels for years to come (and likely forever), through both retail outlets and the aftermarket. As I type this, nearly 1,000 copies of XP are on sale on eBay, where they usually sell for less than $100.

In other news, Microsoft has recently  pledged to keep supporting XP, including the release of security updates, all the way through 2014. So XP users needn't fret that you'll suddenly be victimized by hackers due to unpatched security flaws. Updates should work exactly as you're used to them currently through the Windows Update system.

Seems like the comments here are from home users. There are corporations who are set up with XP and have no desire to move to Vista. We have 50,000 employees around the globe. The XP platform has worked just fine and it seems like Bill is forcing individuals and companies to move to this new OS.

I JUST downgraded to XP from Vista Ultimate on my Acer Ferrai laptop. After a year of dealing with Vista, it is now a relief! Vista was pretty though! But, I don't think I'll go back to Vista until quad+ processors and 10GB of RAM is standard.

For #42: No, you don't. Simple as that. For #43: Do you think so? For #44: Oops, it's me :P. Well, I still prefer XP to Vista even though I've been using Vista for almost a year.

I would recommend trying out linux, especially if you have an old computer. Many linux distros have become easier and easier to use and it's amazing how user friendly they have become, especially recently. Laptops preinstalled with linux such as Asus eee have become hits and You can even buy computers from Dell and HP with linux installed. Some of the most popular linux distros include Ubuntu, Opensuse, Fedora and PCLinuxOS. Linux is not only free but all of them come preinstalled with free software such as openoffice (free version of office suite), GIMP (Photoshop), movie players, cd/dvd rippers, etc. In fact, you can easily download more than 23,000 free packages from Ubuntu's package manager.

HA. A Vista world? Late 09 MS is releasing Windows 7 because they know how big of a fail Vista has been.

And what do you people think Win7 is gonna be based off of? What are the system requirments gonna be for Win7? All I hear is people crying and moaning. You same people were crying when they took Win98 off the shelf. XP blew chuncks when it was released, took 4 darn years to get it to be usable. Bet you complained about XP back in the day too and how much the hardware requirements were. Hardware today is relatively cheap compared to when XP was released. None of you are gonna switch to Mac or Linux, so stop trying to pull a blinder over my eyes. If you can't use Windows properly, you probably will be totally lost in Linux.

Vista is just a bloated "pretty face" with little to offer over XP. XP will live for quite a while as most corporations will refuse to "retool" their hardware to support Vista. It will only be by attrition that Vista-capable hardware gets into corporations. By then maybe we'll have a worthwhile upgrade from XP; Vista certainly wasn't more that a glossy face-lift.

It never fails!!! Every stinking time you get use to a product, the company upgrades or modifies, thus causing the present item to become TOTALLY OBSELETE! Electronic manufacturers are bad for this (ex. Video to DVD to now Blue-Ray)! Not to mention the huge price increase that goes along with that upgrade!!! In a time of a UNGODLY recession, this is not the anwser that people are looking for, THANKS LARGELY TO THE DEMOCRATES, NOT REPUBLICANS!!! Or, they move out of this country to Mexico and still raise their prices!!! This country needs an ENIMA!!!!!!!!!!!

My condolences to WinXP, however, I think that "LINUX" IS THE ONLY WAY TO FLY IN THE MATRIX!!! It's FREE FREE FREE and ROCKS!!! Free upgrades, Free sophisticated software, everything about linux is simply perfection in our Digital realm. Go Linux, and "crush" the Microsoft (in my opinion "the Digital Scammers") corporation. Cheers!

Who needs Microsoft?! After they came up with the sucky Vista, I decided enough is enough! I've recently switched to Ubuntu LINUX and it's far far better!
