iPhone "iPocalypse" as activations fail en masse

As an effort to thwart users from purchasing iPhones and illicitly unlocking them for use on other carriers (and to escape paying service fees to AT&T), Apple and AT&T decided that, with the iPhone 3G, phones would have to be activated in the store at the time of purchase.

This isn't such a stretch from a policy standpoint: Most cell phones need to be activated when you pick them up, otherwise they won't work. But most phones don't have lines around the block made up of people who'd kill to get their hands on the things. Apple obviously saw this coming, so it found a way around the problem: Its setup from last year, which let people activate the phone and select their service plan in a more liesurely atmosphere, was pure genius (even though a few people naturally complained of trouble getting the activation to work).

Well, the alternative, to go back to the traditional cell phone activation scheme, is already looking like a disaster. Bloggers are reporting widespread, catastrophic problems with the in-store activation process. At Gizmodo, early purchasers are reporting total havoc in stores as activations fail. The phones can't be activated in stores, and some purchasers are being allowed to take them home... where they still won't activate. One report says that every computer in a Boston Apple Store is "stuck in the iPhone activation screen."

For the precious few who are seeing lines actually moving, they're moving slow. If you expect to buy an iPhone 3G today, better plan to wait. Buyers are reporting that people who actually make it inside may spend over an hour getting their phone activated.

Disaster? Absolutely. Gizmodo notes though that it's not even the people buying new phones that are the problem, it's the fact that Apple brilliantly decided to release a major firmware update for all iPhones on the same day as releasing a new model. Millions of existing iPhone users are upgrading their software at home while Apple tries to use the same servers to activate new models. It's not a big deal if a home user has to wait an extra hour, but those in line are suffering for the goof-up.

Best advice, iPhone shoppers: Go home before you blow the entire day in line. Try again next week.

For normal cellphones, it's NOT the phone that is usually activated, it is the SIM card that is usually activated. SIM card activation really takes less than 60 seconds to complete. If it takes longer than that, then the store is using a dial-up modem to complete the process.

I (being a major apple fan) has been anticipating the iphone 3g for months and tried to update my 1st gen phone and eventually i had to restore because of the over usage of the server. If you want the update, i reccomend you stay away from the update for a while until the server is less used. If you want the 3g, i reccomend you wait to get it after all the kinks are worked out. And dont hack your phone and plug it into your mac afterwords because apple put a virus through the updates to void your warranty and destroy all hacked phones. I know because i hacked my friends iphone to work for t mobile and the virus said the the sim card was not placed in. He then put the same sim card in his old blackberry and it worked just fine.

Well I guess some people were unlucky. I was in and out of the store in 30 minutes, and they had to copy my sim card from my, old Razor to my new iPhone. They also waived my activation fee. Why Yahoo is launching such negative press on this whole event is beyond me. I guess we are to not to expect good unbiased news coverage anymore. Everyone at the store I got mine at seemed happy and patient. I suppose some of us realize that when a New Product comes out one must expect delays, and some issues. Luckily I've had none and I love this thing. Remember try not to take yourselves too seriously, because frankly, you're not that important ;p

I just had a horrible experience at the AT&T store try to get on iPhone. 4 hours in line and nothing to show for it. Computer problems and back orders kept me from even prepaying and having a phone shipped. Waiting in line was not managed. The info we received while waiting in line was refuted when you got inside. I felt manipulated so ATT&T/Apple can brag about how many people waiting in line. Also, if you use Direct Fulfillment you do not get the next phone delivered to the store. They are reserved for the next morning so they can continue to publicize that people are still waiting in line. You still have to wait at least another week, period.

AT&T did not subsidized their new costumers that applied ahead of time and try to exchange the phone they gave to be used until the iphone release. Instead they charge the costumers $499 for 16 gig and $399 for the 8 gig. The manager said that the extra moneyy paid MIGHT be later credited to the monthly bill. When is it? It depends on AT&T's vice president that will personally review the accounts. This is only one of the bad things people, I, experience after waiting in line the whole night.

the new iphone is a joke just like att.....i was a att customer for about 2 1\2 years when i called them about pricing and a discount on iphone or lg vu they where unwilling to help... so i cancelled my service and whent to verizon they bent over backwards forme gave me the lg dare for 150 waived my activation and the service is great keep in mind this was on the day the dare was realesed ....customer service is great i love my lg dare im typing this from it as we speak....

I alsol purchased two lg dares for 100 dollars (50 bucks each), as well as received 3 motorola phones free, paid no activation fees, and received a 20 percent discount on my monthly plan from verizon. I was about to purchase the Iphone when I read that the 3G network ran only at 420 Kbps. My Dare is running at 680 Kbps, or 61 percent faster than the 3G network on ATT.

Wow. That's kind of saddening how Apple decided to give a firmware update at the same time. Lesson learned I hope.

People really are sheep. Wait in line for something thats overhyped and now it doesn't even work for some of them. Thats what they get for buying into the dumb iphone hype. And you can blame it on the internet too. I can't go anywhere without seeing something about that dumb iphone. I'm so sick of hearing about it. They act like its the greatest thing ever made. Apple must really pay alot of money to sites to keep talking about it. They even had a count down till release. People are really shallow. Hey look at me i have an iphone so that makes me cool.
