Got an Nvidia GeForce 8400 or 8600 graphics card? If you trust the Inquirier (and on this issue, I don't see any reason not to), it's probably going to fail sooner or later. Per Charlie Demerjian's scathing report: "All the G84 and G86 parts are bad. Period. No exceptions. All of them, mobile and desktop...."
This is bad news, a follow-up to reports from earlier this month that said certain (but unspecified) "older" Nvidia graphics chips had problems when installed in laptops, with Nvidia setting aside $200 million to deal with repairs and recall issues.
Demerjian says that's not going to be enough as he details the runaround he's received in trying to ferret out exactly what's going on. Nvidia (which isn't talking about the issue to press, he says, and has made no further statements on the matter in four weeks) has told analysts the issue affects only a small batch of parts that were sent to HP. But Demerjian says that all computer vendors must have received the same components, and that there's no chance that the company would have changed its production process at the end of the production cycle, as Nvidia has claimed, to cause the problem for only a small batch of parts. And yet Nvidia has maintained that the problem is confined to HP.
Anecdotal evidence says something quite different: Dell and Asus owners have been loudly complaining of graphics card failures. As Gizmodo also notes, that also "means every MacBook Pro since the Santa Rosa update has the bad cards."
Nvidia still hasn't announced fixes, but the problem can reportedly be ameliorated, at least somewhat, by running your fan more frequently (if you can), and trying to keep your computer at a relatively constant temperature. For laptops, that means less turning on and off, which causes the temperature to rise and fall drastically and will likely cause the graphics card to fail more quickly. If you have one of these chips in your laptop, you might consider not turning it off at night (though the typical recommendation is the opposite in normal-functioning systems) until the problem is repaired.
Do you have a laptop or desktop with a GeForce 8400 or 8600 card? If it has failed, please post the make and model of your PC here so we can keep track of affected systems. Thanks.

What about where a computer builder buys the graphics cards from a vendor? Are they bad in that case?
I have an XPS 1330. I have had MB fail twice. Cooling fans die. LED screen go out twice. How ong till my graphics card is found to blame for some of this. Dell refuses to take back their dud of a laptop.
I recently got a Macbook Pro, it is running an Nvidia Geforce 8600GT i just got it last june so it is still running fine. How long is the average period before it dies??
I have an HP dv6700z with the 84 in it. Mine, however, seems to be working just fine, but I've had this laptop for less than six months. As someone who uses her laptop nearly 24/7, I rarely turn off my laptop, although I do make extensive use of the "standby" and "hibernate" modes. Furthermore, I downgraded (improved) my OS to XP SP3 instead of the pre-installed resource-hog Vista.
DELL INSPIRON 1420, NVIDIA G8400 the graphics card failed on me..only after 11 months of getting the computer
i bought a HP dv9740us with a geforce 8400 i complain that the notebook is really hot and after a week the blu ray not working return it bought another HP dv9840 with a gforce 8600 same thing it runs really hot and after using it for a month with soo many problem to deal with the notebook crashed twice for a week and ask HP they told me that the prob is the notebook is overheating and it affects the video card its good that i still have 10 days left to return the notebook and the tech guys where i bought the notebook told me that almost 90% of the notebook they sell with and nvidia 8400 or 8600 have been return
What should we do?? I have an HP Pavillion Special Edition dv6780 series with the NVIDIA Geforce 8400M GS processor
MBP in for second MB transplant in 2 month time.... Both times it's been the nVidia chipset that failed.
my G1S-A1 8600 failed after 10 months of use. So confirmed
Got a HP PAVILION DV2700..Issues started after 8 months..Not at all happy now after so much of investment
I have this 8600gt 512mb ddr3 on my pc and I have experienced random crashes or my pc reboot unexpectedly while playing only doom3 and quake 4,but similar newer games like cod 4,fear series, rainbow 6 1& 2,NBA 2008 etc,is very opposite I play these games with no problems at all at medium or higher settings. Previously I play doom 3 on my older v.c which is 7300 gs 256mb ddr2 and I finished the game with no rebooting or problems in low settings. Is 8600gt have problems playing doom3 or quake 4? (both games are similar with each other)
I have the Nvidia 8400. and it did fail few times. HP Pavilion M9040N
I have an Acer Aspire 7720 w/ Nvidia Ge Force 8400m GS. 6 or so months after I had it my games would crash. It only happens when I am playing a game but I have months worth of video hardware errors. I sent it to geek squad and then to the service center twice and they replaced the ram and video card and they cant figure it out but this explains it! The laptop runs hot. I cannot play any games unless they are at minimum settings and even then I crash/freeze once every 20 mins- 1 hour.
I had an 8600GS card in my laptop and it failed after less than a year. HP replaced it for free but I am afraid that it will just fail again. :(
I just spent 325.00 replacing my MB because my Nvidia 8400m gs failed. I've had my HP DV9000 less than a year. I sent it to a component level repair vender, hoping just to replace the graphics card, but the board was fried beyond repair. Unfortunately, the new board has the same card. There are no other options--I asked--but it was replace the MB or buy a new laptop. I feel like it's just a matter of time before it fails again.
I have a Dell 1420, with a 8400M GS, I've had my laptop for a little over a year and a half, and it's video card just failed.
I have a VAIO AR-630E with the Nvidia 8400GT ,same story, the computer died after 16 months of use.Blue screen appears, and windows reboots, fails ,with the resoultion changed and some times with vertical rare stripes. I took it to a sony service shop and they told me that they had to change the mother board, but now im doubting if its worthy to fix it cause im afraid it will fail again. Any news about this problems?
VGN-FZ180E with nVIDIA 8400M GS just died. Definitely the GPU. Blue vertical lines over BIOS screen. Used to boot to safe mode 1 out of 30 times. Not now. Sony denies a problem. I am giving them one more chance and then going to small claims court. NV set aside $250 million because of this problem. Sony sucks.
I frequently experience freezes with a red pattern on the top of the screen; at other times, I get weird static and messy colors, sometimes even Blue Screen Of Death, saying that NV4Disp.dll has crashed. Furthermore, if I try to fine tune from Nvidia nTune, the computer crashes within the first 10 minutes. I have ASUS 8600 GT 256 DDR3, AMD Athlon 64 ~2400 MHz, GEIL 2048 DDR2 ~800MHz, and some no-name 350W source. Running XP 32, SP2. A friend of mine has had simillar issues with an Nvidia 8600, but changed it to a 9600 and now has no more problems.
