Cheap printer ink: Easy savings or bad investment?

Last month I looked into toner for my cheap Samsung laser printer and was shocked to see price quotes well over $100 for a simple black cartridge. (The printer itself costs only $160.)

Expensive printer ink has long been one of the biggest tech scams running. (The Register long ago noted it was seven times more expensive per milliliter than Dom Perignon champagne.) Fortunately, third-party vendors have come to the rescue with offers of private-label ink and toner, often for half the price of an "official" cartridge offered directly from the company. But, as expected, the printer manufacturers have fired back, claiming that off-brand toner and ink isn't as good as what you can get from the manufacturer. In at least one case, a company sued an off-brand cartridge maker to try to stop them from manufacturing cartridges, citng the DMCA. (On appeal, the cartridge maker won.)

Legalities aside, the question remains: Is off-brand ink really as good as that put out by HP, Epson, Canon, and the like? I bought the cheapie and ended up saving $60 on the price of a printer cartridge, but if the quality is going to be worse, was it really worth it? That's an especially important question if you're printing color photos instead of simple B&W paperwork.

This is a long way of pointing the way to PC World, which recently produced the most in-depth look at manufacturer vs. third-party ink that I've ever read. (Only inkjets were tested, however, not lasers.) The bottom line surprised me: In virtually all of its tests, "official" ink substantially outpaced third-party cartridges, both in original print quality and in resistance to fading under exposure to UV light. Only one printer, an HP PhotoSmart, had results showing prints made with third-party ink as generally as good as the manufacturer's ink. Don't believe it? Check out the slide show showing some of these prints side by side. A few of the examples are outright shocking.

The bright spot is that cheap ink, in addition to being, well, cheap, will often get you more prints from a cartridge, too. In scenarios where quality is not important (like printing simple text for personal use), third-party ink might make sense. The problem, of course, is that you never know when something you might actually need to look good will come up, and who wants to swap ink cartridges in and out?

As a printer service company, we love it when people use third party ink or refills. We don't sell aftermarket cartridges, but they sure are profitable for us, too. We get at least one machine a week due to defective aftermarket ink or toner cartridges. We really love the remanufactured or refilled cartridges. At $80.00 an hour for repairs, third party cartridges aren't so cheap after all.

I've been refilling my own cartridges for YEARS. It's WAY cheaper! I've only had to replace a cartridge with a new 1 approx. 1x/yr. when I waited too long to refill it & the sponge inside completely dried out. Those who had problems w/the print head clogging--the instructions say to wipe the print head off w/a damp paper towel (a tissue works, too) immediately after refilling & this works. If you overfill the instructions tell you how to remove extra ink or suction out some ink thru print head to unclogg. Very happy w/the quality of ink from www.stratitec.com even on photos.

I went to Walgreens for a color and black and white cartridge for my Dell 962 All In One. I got only 100 sheets from the color and 125 from the black and white! I was cheated! Karen Martin-Redford, Mi.

I ruined a HP printer with a refilled cartridge with plugged nozzles. Not worth the hassle. The ink is as equally important as the printer. Like cell phones and carriers. You get what you pay for...

I went down the route that Kodak is selling. Spend a little more on the printer and pay half to cost on the ink jet ink. So far I have been satisfied. The quality is great and the ink price is much better than HP, Epson or Canon. I prefer the approach of investing al little more up front and then pay less later. The Printer has not been perfect and has had print head problems. Kodak support has been good and replaced the print heads twice now. So far I am willing to tolarate the issue and continue down the path. DT

One of the posts here stated that the refilled cartridge lasted as long or longer than the original HP. I was told that was not always the case. You might pay less for a refilled cartridge but the ink would run out sooner. Does anyone have a comment on this?

All this talk about Walgreens, you get what you pay for. Cheap price equals cheap ink. I've been using Cartridge World ink and toners for my office and home use for almost two years with little or no problem, and if there is a problem they take care of it right away, plus they will bring it to me if i can't get to thier store in person to pick it up free of charge.

Walgreens has kids with limited experience refilling and ruined my new hp 78 and would not replace it. I found these guys on the net and they are way cool. Laser Toner and Ink Resources. They save me a ton and I just have them mailed to me for free. email at lasertonerandink@gmail.com, they know everything. My buddy got his toner there, he said he saved alot.

I have gone both ways and except for really detailed photo work, the only drawback seems to be that the printer does notread proper levels onthe refill cartridge.

I have an HP Photosmart printer and use re-manufactured cartridges with very little, if any, drop off in quality. I previously had a Canon printer that the difference was quite significant. I purchased my Printer @ Wal-Mart for less than $90.00. I have always bought my re-manufactured cartridges at Office Max so I could not weigh in on anyone elses cartridges.

I have been using inkjet refill and recycled ink cartridges from Fillserv for my HP Deskjet printer, HP 4 in 1 printer and Epson Photo printer. No problems as yet. Color photos look just as good as it did with the originial cartridge. when I replaced it, I did get an error message, but so far it has worked just fine.

I have two different prints that I use a lot, they are both HP brands, one is a Photosmart 420, the other is PSC 1410v. Almost two years ago I bought a ink refill kit from Sam's Club for $40.00 and have been refilling my cartridges on my own. I have had too buy new cartridges twice since then because they do tend to wear out after a while. I have kept a running total and so far I have saved almost $975.00 with that $40.00 kit. I can tell no difference in the quality.
