Confused by the alphabet soup of cell phone acronyms? I don't blame you. Here's a cheat sheet that'll help you navigate the waters while your shopping for your next phone—or trying to get the most out of the handset you've got.

Boring.
I used to work in the cell phone business. This artical is great at the attempt to educate customers who have cell phones. The more they know the less frustrated they are going to be and the easier it is to help them.
Get a life.
I thought it was going to give us a real cheat sheet for text message lingo people often use to abbreviate. OMG, LOL, NBD, and that sort of thing. Not what I wanted to read about.
I am currently a Director for a service company in the telecommunications industry. I want to applaud you for this accurate and "easy to understand" explanation of competing networks in the US. This should serve to be very beneficial to average consumers trying to make a choice.

i just want to use my phone!
this was not helpful.... only more confusing......
This article is boring!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The wireless data indicator displays as "G" and is located to the left of the signal strength indicator at the top-left corner of the standby screen
The G in the corner of your screen indicates that you are in an area with "GSM only" coverage as opposed to an area with the greater "edge" coverage. An "E' would appear in this area.
gotta love it. I guess Yahoo has something about quotation marks. here it is again... The G in the corner of your screen indicates that you are in an area with GSM only coverage as opposed to an area with the greater EDGE coverage. An E would appear in this area.

Thanks to add information, it is usefull and what I never knew...!
OK, so I've had a half-dozen or so cell phones over the last ten years, mostly for business, and not only have I never needed to know any of this mindless drivel, I can't possibly understand any reason I would ever need to know the meaningless acronyms this crap stands for that in no way relates to the actual function, purpose or meaning of said acronym. Perhaps you should start trying to teach parents the lingo of their kid's text messages instead. I'm sure all parents want to know the meaning of my advice to you: STFU n00b. GTFO. QFT.
LOL
This has made no difference to me, I just use the phone and don't care about what these things stand for. It is not interesting or relevant.
I found this very informative, thanks.
holy ----- man im lost on every word of this . i mean do u really think any teenages are gonna use that. well thats really messed up though later

nothing compared to the acronyms Filipinos use for cellphones. when it comes to mobile, everything is in acronym. every word typed in a text message is acronym. like "evry word typd n a txt msg is acronym."
