It's not exactly the sleekest portable media player I've laid eyes on, but it'll outlast your iPod during, say, a 10-day hiking trip in the boonies—and it'll charge your dying cell phone in the process.
The eMotion EM-SOL1GIG is pretty chunky as media players go: at five inches across, an inch thick, and a hefty 10 ounces, you won't be putting this sucker in your jeans pocket anytime soon. Open it up, however, and you'll find a pair of solar panels that'll charge the player's lithium-ion battery in about three or four hours (good for 17 hours of music playback). Even better, the player comes with a set of six connectors for charging laptops, cell phones, and other portable devices.
Specs-wise, the EM-SOL1GIG holds its own quite nicely. It can handle MP3, WMA, and WAV audio files, along with AVI and MPEG-4 video; the 3.5-inch, 320-by-240-pixel display was decent enough, if a little short of eye-popping. The player also has a photo viewer and a TXT file reader, along with a game emulator that'll run NES, GameBoy, and Sega game ROMs. Oh, and if you get lost in the woods, the built-in LED flashlight can help you find your way back to the tent.
Pretty nice, although the eMotion media player ($149, available now) falls down a bit in the storage department—it has only 1GB of internal flash memory (a 4GB version is also on tap in the $185 range), although the SD memory card slot can expand that total by another 2GB.

I choose life!
All that awesomeness for 189 bucks? That's pretty good! Aand...this isn't a board for ya'lls b*tchin'!
yay i agree with robin =D
Wonder how much light needed to power up this gadget. Looks cool.
That is really cool. Just wish the memory was bigger. 1Gb and 2GB SD expansion isn't much at all. Even the 4GB is nothing.
Wow, trolls on an article about an mp3 player. That's sad. People need lives. No, a solar powered mp3 player won't save a lot of power, but I'm geeked about the idea of not needing batteries or having to deal with my phone going out when I'm running all day. Batteries are expensive and I loose too many power cables. I really like this gadget especially as it plays games, too. I hope its popular enough cus I want to see this technology grow.
This thing is so crazy! Im sooooo kidding lol this thing is awesome it saves electricity. That way we wont run out of coal. Its so cool what people can come up with!!!!!!!!!
Overall nice concept, great idea. Need work on the memory department. It is all about the $'s. $35 more you can get the 4GB version, that is pure crap. Does it really cost the company more by telling the assembly line person to add in the 4GB memory? I am sure the little kid is still getting paid the same, less than a dollar a day. I am just tired of these companies ripping off the consumer. You all take care.
I love how about 50% of the people I ask believe in global warming and 50% don't.
one Gig is horrible. But the idea of it is wonderful. That thing could really save you somewhere. Good price too. Very interesting idea to say the least.
Would have been great if it also incorporates voip features. There is a market need for this.
I don't care about the political side of it. All I care about is that I wouldn't have to buy f'in POWER SOURCES like batteries. That would be a major plus. So what if it's clunky? For all you dinos, remember how the first home PCs were, the first Walkman, ..well, the first anything!
anything that gets us closer towards oil independence so i don't have to give any money to iran and venezuela works for me. i'll get one.
in response to K ELECTRODE; yes there are solar chargers out there. Check out the sexy "solio" http://www.solio.com/charger/
im gonna need a thumb brace now...
any product that can use solor power instead of batteries or electric cords are a great idea,,, not only on the global warming issue,, how about all the money that can be saved by not buying all those batteries for our gadgets,,, not to mention remembering which batteries in the draw are still good,,,
i wonder if they actually hold up or if they aren't very good quality......
Wowzerz! This looks great for a camping/hiking expedition. I'll just throw it in my backpack and recharge it again during lunch when I go hiking.
