Going Green: Solar-Powered MP3/Video Player

It's not exactly the sleekest portable media player I've laid eyes on, but it'll outlast your iPod during, say, a 10-day hiking trip in the boonies—and it'll charge your dying cell phone in the process.

The eMotion EM-SOL1GIG is pretty chunky as media players go: at five inches across, an inch thick, and a hefty 10 ounces, you won't be putting this sucker in your jeans pocket anytime soon. Open it up, however, and you'll find a pair of solar panels that'll charge the player's lithium-ion battery in about three or four hours (good for 17 hours of music playback). Even better, the player comes with a set of six connectors for charging laptops, cell phones, and other portable devices.

Specs-wise, the EM-SOL1GIG holds its own quite nicely. It can handle MP3, WMA, and WAV audio files, along with AVI and MPEG-4 video; the 3.5-inch, 320-by-240-pixel display was decent enough, if a little short of eye-popping. The player also has a photo viewer and a TXT file reader, along with a game emulator that'll run NES, GameBoy, and Sega game ROMs. Oh, and if you get lost in the woods, the built-in LED flashlight can help you find your way back to the tent.

Pretty nice, although the eMotion media player ($149, available now) falls down a bit in the storage department—it has only 1GB of internal flash memory (a 4GB version is also on tap in the $185 range), although the SD memory card slot can expand that total by another 2GB.

GLOBAL WARMING IS REAL THE REASON THE AIR IS LESS POLLUTED NOW IS BECAUSE WE USE LESS COAL WHICH POLLUTES THE AIR, BUT TEMPTURATURES ARE STILL RISING DUE TO CO2 LEVELS, PENGUIN HATERS! the device is awesome! but i wouldn't want to sit out in the sun 4 a few hours in order to charge it

wow the eMotion seems really cool, especially since it can charge several things. it's especially helpful when there isnt an outlet or when you run out of batteries. I agree, im too lazy to go buy batteries myself and think that the price range is great for all that it does xD

Honestly global warming is just a natural occurance that has happened at least once before. But mankind could be doing alot more to preserve our world and make sure its here for a children and generations to follow. So a product like this only shows that maybe just maybe, were heading in the right direction.

ok this seems like a nifty item(if a little low on storage side) but why in the world would you want to take it hiking or camping, isnt the idea of that to get away from all the gadgets?

ok, does anyone know where you can actually get one? ok fine, so it wont help global wamring (which i dont really belive is man made anyways) but for people who camp or go on long trips this sounds awesome, also great to show off, so why cant i find it anywhere? it says its available now

Oh well aside from the negative banter about global warming, this mp3 looks to be useful as a solar cellphone and laptop (and other periphery) charger. I wonder how long it would take to charge up my Treo or Dell Inspiron. One could potentially use this all over the world for good use in electronic applications. The price is not extreme apparently either, but MediaStreet should put a better screen in the EMSOL1GIG or 4GIG.

It looks decent but i just bought a 2 gig mp3 player for 28 dollars cant beat that.

It should be water resistant to be considered as an outdoor product or to fit in the example given above. As far as I know some batteries can be charged on a cloudy or rainy day, then one should be able to charge it under at least light rain.

okay kids now make nice. I've been through enough hurricanes to know this would be a blessing. I have batteries all over the house for that 'moment' when the next big one hits. After Wilma and weeks of no cell phone (unless you plugged it in the car and sat for an hour burning gas to charge it, how stupid is that?) no laptop for college, no nothing - I think this would be nice. My friend just rode his bike across the US and this would have been great for his music and his cell. It would be great for campers, survivors and oh yeah, good for the planet too. So there.

WOW!! I expected this to be very expensive. Even though it is more expensive than regular mp3 players, this is well worth the money.

  • 63 Posted by hudphew_warra on Thu Sep 3, 2009 4:21PM EDT Report Abuse

Why don't they just make it a solar charging battery with different connections for better smaller slimmer devices to run on! Most people already have MP3 MP4 players and don't need another device. Thats what I would buy!

Cool gadget! I wish they would just turn it into an all in one like the ever so popular iphone. I would love to have a phone/internet/mp3 player/movie or clip viewer/organizer that saved power. no matter how high the price, you know there is a market for it.
