Going Green: Solar-Powered MP3/Video Player

It's not exactly the sleekest portable media player I've laid eyes on, but it'll outlast your iPod during, say, a 10-day hiking trip in the boonies—and it'll charge your dying cell phone in the process.

The eMotion EM-SOL1GIG is pretty chunky as media players go: at five inches across, an inch thick, and a hefty 10 ounces, you won't be putting this sucker in your jeans pocket anytime soon. Open it up, however, and you'll find a pair of solar panels that'll charge the player's lithium-ion battery in about three or four hours (good for 17 hours of music playback). Even better, the player comes with a set of six connectors for charging laptops, cell phones, and other portable devices.

Specs-wise, the EM-SOL1GIG holds its own quite nicely. It can handle MP3, WMA, and WAV audio files, along with AVI and MPEG-4 video; the 3.5-inch, 320-by-240-pixel display was decent enough, if a little short of eye-popping. The player also has a photo viewer and a TXT file reader, along with a game emulator that'll run NES, GameBoy, and Sega game ROMs. Oh, and if you get lost in the woods, the built-in LED flashlight can help you find your way back to the tent.

Pretty nice, although the eMotion media player ($149, available now) falls down a bit in the storage department—it has only 1GB of internal flash memory (a 4GB version is also on tap in the $185 range), although the SD memory card slot can expand that total by another 2GB.

I'm planning on going completely solar this year, my new years resolution. I get a $23,000 credit from Uncle Sam. I think we should all do it if we can. Look at ecohouseinfo.com Good Luck! Go Solar!

This comes across as a real cool item to have on camping trips. If it had a cork screw to open up wine bottles, I would buy it in a minute! Seriously, from a hiker or camper, this sounds ideal and I do plan to buy one.

think it is an excelent idea. And the fact that it has the ability to charge laptops impresses me. Now instsed of plugging in our computers, we can charge tham with the sun--AWESOME!!!!

Its fascinating how technology advances each and every day. I think the eMotion is great because its eco-friendly, and it can charge other things of yours. Im surprised it is priced as cheaply as it is, because I would have imagined it would be a lot more. Tech is going green!

Folks, the only choice we have is: compromise. We're "civilized". That means compromise. We can't live "naturally". If you have central heat, a telephone, a car, etc, etc, it's called civilization. The momre "things" you have, the more you're getting away from the "natural". Face it. The alternative is, I guess, withdrawing from civilization and living on a mountaintop or on the sand at the beach (in a warm climate) and, also, not "pulling your weight". So, choose.

Solar-Powered MP3/Video Player looks cool. Wonder how much light needed to power up this gadget. We truly look forward to market it. There is a huge market need for this and ofcourse a new business opportunity.

Great concept... moving in the right direction. Though, I'd love to see a smaller unit w/ a flexible (roll-up, etc.) solar panel.

Im an mp3 player and cell phone salesman, my opinion is that this device sounds awesome. Size and weight hurt. But the ROM emulator is gonna be the most worth it aspect. The expandable memory card slot is almost perfect... it shoulda been a SDHC reader, for 4 gig and up cards. Then i'd buy it personally.

lol to global warming. Even the creaters of South Park knew Gore's intentions behind the so-called "Inconvenient Truth". With all rebuking to left-wing mumbo-jumbo aside, I'd say this would be a very handy little gadget. It's good to have something that is actually efficient when it comes to solar energy storage. Does anyone know if they make a convenient solar charger like this, but without the media-playing? Not only would it be cheaper, but being that people interested in this likely already have a chargeable device or two, it would be nice just to have the effective charging by itself.
