Going Green: Solar-Powered MP3/Video Player

It's not exactly the sleekest portable media player I've laid eyes on, but it'll outlast your iPod during, say, a 10-day hiking trip in the boonies—and it'll charge your dying cell phone in the process.

The eMotion EM-SOL1GIG is pretty chunky as media players go: at five inches across, an inch thick, and a hefty 10 ounces, you won't be putting this sucker in your jeans pocket anytime soon. Open it up, however, and you'll find a pair of solar panels that'll charge the player's lithium-ion battery in about three or four hours (good for 17 hours of music playback). Even better, the player comes with a set of six connectors for charging laptops, cell phones, and other portable devices.

Specs-wise, the EM-SOL1GIG holds its own quite nicely. It can handle MP3, WMA, and WAV audio files, along with AVI and MPEG-4 video; the 3.5-inch, 320-by-240-pixel display was decent enough, if a little short of eye-popping. The player also has a photo viewer and a TXT file reader, along with a game emulator that'll run NES, GameBoy, and Sega game ROMs. Oh, and if you get lost in the woods, the built-in LED flashlight can help you find your way back to the tent.

Pretty nice, although the eMotion media player ($149, available now) falls down a bit in the storage department—it has only 1GB of internal flash memory (a 4GB version is also on tap in the $185 range), although the SD memory card slot can expand that total by another 2GB.

if they could make one that is powered by motion, like some watches, that would be great too. It would give hikers a reason to hike more and those who don't, well, a reason to get out there and walk or move! But I'll take the solar powered any day. I have solar powered tiki torches and they're so cool - look like fire but not. I want to get a wind turbine in my back yard; living in Florida we have sunshine and wind so I could get off the grid most the time. I just like this doohickey and would buy one.

What is wrong with buying something solar powered? I am a Reagan republican and i can see the value and ease of having something like that. Free Ipod for all!

Harbor Freights has the Solar panels for about 30 smacks with a little research, you can make any mp3/radio solar. Global Warming..blah, blah..is here to stay, it's a fact we will be the end of our species and the cycle of life starts all over again! We can't make a quiet vacuum cleaner, no way we can't get rid of plastics, and have you ever wondered where all the rubber from your tire goes? Gasses, compose and decompose..it's a cycle. Enjoy it all while you can.

I'm pretty sure that this creative use for solar energy has absolutely nothing to do with a "global warming theory" rorbincalendar, but then I figure you're so stuck in one place that you would read that into anything progressive. Solar powered devices aren't new, and were around long before anyone spoke publicly about the obvious changes in our environment and their effects on the future of life as we know it. We all know that minds like yours don't like change, but rather accept stagnation as a necessity to maintain the status quo you so adore. And you'll do almost anything to preserve your stone age stance. Even create your own reality while ignoring the obvious and blaming others for doing what you see as exactly the same as what you are guilty. Just what are the facts, rorbincalendar ? Please educate us all before we go and do something stupid like act responsibly, or something worse. On the real subject at hand... This looks like an incredible idea for travel, and potentially remote circumstances, where you cannot otherwise charge your e-lifelines. The ability it has to share energy with other devices is a wonderful, and useful addition. Besides, some of us like toys, especially toys that do things no other toys yet do. Mostly, it's likely a good sign of better things and ideas to come. And best of all, it's a very affordable investment in toyland. Thanks for the heads up, Ben!

Honestly global warming is just a natural occurance that has happened at least once before. "Honestly global warming is just a natural occurance that has happened at least once before." Glad you are being so honest. You must be god, right? Thanks for the laugh.

Mr. Bri3783...it's a great thing that our oceans are not as shallow as your thinking. You don't look at the large amount of power, or the nasty chemicals, that are used in the manufacturing of solar cells. They are far from "free" or :green". Just the source of pollution is moved farther away. And...it has a battery in it that will need to be changed on occasion. If it wasn't for people like you, we might have been at the same levels of nuclear power production as, say, France - who gets 60%+ of their electricity from nuclear plants. People like you who don't want nuclear...or hydro....or windmills....or coal-fired plants...or oil-fired plants...what's left? solar power. we should all get solar cells to power our lives and be left standing in pools of hydrofluoric acid and other materials used to etch the cells. and where do you think the power comes from to create the slugs of silicone and run the process equipment and the cleanrooms? dirty nasty coal and oil fired plants. I'd like one of these things when it has 4 - 8GB of memory.

I hypothesis that people who don’t believe in global warming also don’t have a college degree (Communications and Business degrees don’t count it just proves you can read at a 5th grade level). Whether humans are the only cause or it is a combination of natural and artificial causes remains to be seen. Also the earth is not cleaner now then it was 50 years ago we just use different pollutants. In Salt Lake City we can’t see the mountains right now because of all the smog.

global warming? how about we in the U.S.are just pigs when it comes to consumption and making trash for the world. So why put down those who want to clean up things a bit? Besides those of us who believe in recycling etc. are just trying to save Earth for our grandkids. Solar power is developing and its a great thing.

Google "Milutin Milankovitch." It amazes me that after 100 years people will not accept that we cannot prevent climate change. We need to focus our energy on technology that will allow us to survive the change, not technology that will prevent "global warming," which most scientists do not buy into. We agree in the scientific community that the earth is getting warmer however, the human impact is really minimal. I'm not trying to discourage the green movement by any means, we need a clean earth. The honest truth is that most green products we buy are only afforable for a very small percentage of humankind. Meanwhile the rest of the world struggles to get by, and we are enabling this. I would rather invest in hydro argriculture, hydrogen fuel, and industrial applications that will sustain our future generations in an ever changing global environment.
