My Creaky Xbox 360: Aches and Pains Aplenty

Like many an Xbox 360 gamer, I'm already on my second console (after my first one bit the dust last spring). But while it's still chugging away, my little beige buddy is suffering from a litany of ailments—some merely minor and annoying, others more serious. And from what I've read on the Microsoft forums, I'm one of the lucky ones.

Before I begin my latest rant, I'd like to point out that hardware issues aside, I love my Xbox 360—I think the software platform is brilliant, I love the games (my wife has threatened to hide my "Halo 3" game disc), and I'm a Video Marketplace junkie. No quarrels there.

But almost all the fun came to a screeching halt last May, when my barely six-month-old Xbox 360 got hit with the Red Ring of Death. About a month later, Microsoft tech support sent me a brand-new console, and I was gaming again. Luckily, the dreaded RROD has yet to reappear (although many 360 owners are on their third or even fourth consoles), but over the past few months, a series of bugs and glitches have cropped up—and sadly, just about every one is well documented in the Xbox 360 support forums. Among them (starting with the most minor):

  • Busted USB port flap: It's a little, spring-loaded plastic flap that covers the twin USB ports below the main power switch. Anyway, the spring broke several weeks ago, and now the flap just lies flat, leaving the ports exposed. Not the biggest thing in the world, but annoying nonetheless. (Click here for similar complaints on the Xbox forums.)
  • "Unreadable Disc" errors: My new console seems to have a particularly sensitive DVD drive. Many games play just fine (I've played dozens—nay, hundreds—of hours on "Halo 3" with no problems), but with "Gears of War" and "Madden '08," I regularly get "This disc is unreadable" alerts—an error that stops any gameplay in its tracks, forcing you to return to the Xbox Dashboard. Both game discs look almost completely free of scratches, and if I eject them from the 360 drive and put them back in, gaming usually resumes. Luckily, "Gears of War" auto-saves regularly, but I've cursed like a sailor after my Madden matchups (with 15-minute quarters, mind you) come to a sudden, unrecoverable end in the third quarter. (Similar complains here, here, and here.)
  • Disc tray won't open: Oh, one more thing. That DVD drive I was just complaining about? It won't open anymore—at least not on its own, anyway. When I hit the eject button, the green light on the "eject" button flashes, the drive makes a few little clicking noises, and then...nothing. Now, if I want to open the DVD tray, I have to press the eject button and then give the tray itself a little push, which seems to do the trick. (More gamers with the same problem here.)

So, are any of these bugs fatal? Not at all, and luckily, none of them are bad enough to warrant sending my replacement console back to Microsoft for repair (well, not yet anyway). And yes, Microsoft did step up to the plate and extend the 360's warranty to a full three years, and I give Redmond credit for that. But based on the problems I'm having—and the ongoing complaints on the Xbox forums—it sounds like plenty of shoddy 360 consoles are still rolling off the assembly lines. (And say what you will about Sony's PlayStation 3, but that console appears to be as tough as nails.) I have to say, when I plunked down my $400 for the Xbox 360, I expected more from Microsoft—a lot more.

OK, fellow Xbox 360 gamers: getting any grief from your consoles? Sound off.

My son is on his third 360. His first one lasted 2 years. The red ring of death took it. Microsoft did send us another one but it only lasted a little over 3 months. One of the above writers said he was having trouble with dvd drive tray opening, my sons would not stay closed. When he would close the tray it would come back open. The 360 made a grinding noise inside. I called microsoft and they wanted $100.00 to fix it. They said the dvd drive was not under waranty. I ended up buying a brand new one. I may send the old one in to have one on hand for a spare. Someone told me the new 360s are being built a little better, can anyone commit on that. Thank you. I just bought it Jan.28th.of 2008.

tlappert, it's rumored that they newer premiums and elite (both that have HDMI) are better, but are still around the 10% failing rate versus the 30%. In august, they are supposed to be rolling out another chipset. I believe it's supposed to be a 60 or 65nm, rather than the 90nm currently used. It is codenamed "Jasper". Look up Jasper 360 and you'll see the speculation surrounding it.

Thank you for your answer. I will keep my fingers crossed in hopes that this system will last until the technology gets better. Thanks again.

I'm on my fourth console. All of them have gotten the ring of death. If I didn't love the system so much there is o way I would put up with this. At least Microsoft is being helpful. If you harass them the give you free stuff which is awesome. I've gotten a controller, a memory card, PGR3, Fable, and something else. (Can't remember what right now.)

I think loyalty is great, but anything over 2 systems, burned, would drive me mad. I prefer to wait until all the bugs are out of a system. Never buy any electronic device at launch, and often wait at least 2 years. Never had a problem with a new gaming system I've bought doing that.

I own 2 XboX 360s. One I have had just over a year. Sent it in about 2 months ago because I was getting a lot of "read disk errors". Got it back in about 3 weeks. 5 days ago it caught the RROD. Just sent it back to Microsoft today. My other one, I have had about 6 months with no issues. Hope this one will hold out. But I feel lucky enough that I have two. My son and I will have to share for a while, but better than none at all! Feel sorry for the people who have to go cold turkey. Even with the issues, I still feel it is the best system on the market today.

I'm about to ship back my console for the second time in a year for the RROD. Pretty darn annoying, especially 'cause I wasn't going to go a month with no 360, so I bought another one with the intention of returning it when the first comes back from it's second trip to warranty land.

yeah I am on my second console too... part of the problem is when you have the 360 vertical... it puts rings on your discs and damages them permanently DON'T MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE AS ME!!!

The two things that annoy me is, first, when the battery on the controller is low and it starts doing that alternating flashing thing with the LED lights. That is SO FRIGGIN' ANNOYING. I wish i could turn it off. The other annoying thing is the D-Pad on the controller. When I try to press down on it, only one out of 5 times does it actually move down. Most times it moves left or right. The D-Pad is so poorly designed, I'm surprised it even works at all. Other than that, I've had no issues with the system itself, yet.

I bought the Elite just before halo 3 came out and I have yet to experience any issues with it. I'm not sure if I'm as hardcore as most gamers, considering the console hasn't been turned on in almost 3 weeks. I can only hope this thing doesn't crap out on me any time soon.

Can anyone tell me what a loaner console is?

  • 17 Posted by anylucky_star on Thu Sep 3, 2009 2:56PM EDT Report Abuse

So far so good with the Elite my boyfriend and I purchased in July. The first one we had caught the RROD and had pretty much all the above troubles. We didn't know we could send it in so we bought an Elite while the old one collected some dust in the closet. But after we sent it in and got a new one, it's worked allright. Although it's only been about 3 months. So now we have his and hers xboxes. Going to have to get the boyfriend not to set his vertical though, if what jaymanbennett says is true. Hopefully all goes well with both Xboxes, cause if not Microsoft will be hearing from me. Good luck to everyone!

Re: BEST BUY SELLS USED AND DAMAGED PS2 IN A NEW PACKAGE WHEN YOU BUY ELECTRONIC PRODUT, OPEN THE BOX BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE STORE! Dear Sir or Madam: The reason I write to you today is I want you to help me get the story to the public, to everyone, to let them know: WHEN YOU BUY ELECTRONIC PRODUT, OPEN THE BOX BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE STORE! I bought a “new Play Station 2” game system from “Best Buy” on Feb 8, 2008 at 4PM, which located at: 8801 Queens blvd, Elmhurst”. But when I went back to home and open the package box, I found the system is not working at all, even the power could not be turned on, and also I found there is lots of dirt outside the PS2 and inside the CD tray, and lots scratches outside. I realize that the product I just bought and get out from that sealed box is a used, damaged item and switched. Then I want back to the store as soon as I can, want to get my money back. At almost 5PM on the same day, I get back to the store, and I showed them the box and the “PS2”, they told me that they can not take the product back, and they are not going to give me return or exchange, the reason is the label on the back of the “PS2” is been replaced, and the product is damaged. (I bought like that! Oh my god!). I just got that idea at that moment. I am in trouble! Then I looked on that label, it was scanned and printed by some printer. Oh my god! Who did it? … I made lots of phone call to the Best Buy customer service and to SONY Corp. they all told me the same thing, that they can not do anything, I have to keep that PS2. Now I am get stock in there… I really do not know what to do to get my justice! I need help! Even that I cannot get my money back and nothing, I really do not want to see a same thing happen again to any other person. Sincerely yours,

A friend of mine has been through 6. All replaced for free but 6!! I personally went with PS3 which has been good to me so far. It's true that the graphics are inferior on the MP games but that actually causes me to resent the 360 and just stick with PS3 exclusives. Right now, great PS3 exclusives are "Uncharted". But over the next year that will improve. In the meantime, if the American consumer didn't reward companies from rushing under-developed low quality products, we wouldn't have Microsoft anything.

no problems so far on my one year old 360. i lay it horizontally and put spacers between it and the table surface so all sides can breathe. i also use the lowest resolution my monitor can support so as not to tax the gpu. i also don't play immediately when i turn it on and i don't turn it off immediately after playing.
