PS3 Finally Beats Xbox 360 in Monthly Sales

For the first time since its launch in late 2006, the troubled PlayStation 3 moved more consoles in a month than did the Xbox 360, although the red-hot Wii is still the top dog, according to the latest numbers. Microsoft says it has an explanation, though.

The NPD Group (by way of Kotaku) reports that about 274,000 Wii consoles were sold in January—well shy of the 1.35 million Wiis sold in December, although we can chalk that up to the post-holiday doldrums.

More surprising, however, is the runner-up in January console sales: the once struggling but now surging PS3, which sold about 269,000 units in January (only about 5,000 consoles shy of the Wii). Meanwhile, trailing in the back of the pack is the Xbox 360, which beat the PS3 handily in December but only moved 230,000 consoles last month (fewer than the PS3, the Nintendo DS or the PSP).

So, what happened? Is the Xbox 360 in a slump? Far from it, say Microsoft spin doctors, who argue that there's just a shortage of inventory due to high demand during the holidays. That may be true—the 360 sold an impressive 1.3 million units in December—but there's also no question that the PS3 is on a little run, with some observers predicting that Sony's next-gen console may actually outsell both the Wii and the Xbox 360 by 2011.

I have to admit, with my own 360 console out for repairs, I've been giving the PS3 a serious look—what with its apparently future-proof Blu-ray player, improving game line-up, rock-solid performance, and (at last) a reasonable $400 price tag for the 40GB version. And if Netflix does, indeed, bring movie streaming to gaming consoles like the PS3, my Xbox 360 might end up with some competition in the living room.

I got my PS3 for Christmas this year for myself (I'm 30 years old, a dad and am married), despite my 2 younger brothers and neighbor insising I get a Xbox. I was back and forth and almost caved and got the Xbox, but wanted to be sure I got to play MGS4 when it finally is released. I love it...I have the 40 GB version that doesn't have backwards compatibility, BUT, my old PS2 is still alive and kicking, so why do I really need that?? Plus, I don't play those old games any more! The built in Wi-Fi, and Blu-Ray, Blue Tooth head set that I use for my cell phone are all huge perks over the Xbox. Plus the Xbox controller is so darn big and awkward. COD4 online on the PSN is very good...never have issues. GH3 requres a weird dongle that the Xbox doesn't, but otherwise I really like my PS3. There aren't a lot of games out now, but there will be soon and hey, I have COD4 until then. Oh, and one of my brothers is on his 3rd Xbox and my other one is on his 2nd. I still have my PS2:)

Sorry, but the statement that your X-360 is OUT FOR REPAIRS is suspect to preacher alliteration. I've had mine since the day it came out and have had no problem with it. And I have only met 1 person to ever have a problem. The Blue-Ray is a plus sure, but X-360 has AWESOME online gameplay and the downloadable movies look great too. By the time BluRay catches up to the masses 90% of all content will already be downloaded or at least downloadable in high def format. To this day I would still buy a X-360 over a PS3.

The Wii is the undisputable champ and rightfully so. The innovation and design leaves the other consoles in the dust. The PS3 may be a little more future proof than the Wii, but if Nintendo is saavy they will have a next gen Wii that will trump the PS3.

I'm sure many have already posted a similar comment, but this was bound to happen. Most people already own a 360 to begin with. Of course sales are going to slow down. I think the PS3 has the potential to be a great system, but I just haven't found any reason to buy one yet. If it's a multi-platform game I'm buying it for my 360 hands down. PS3 exclusives are mediocre at best. It's still nothing special, people just want something new and the PS3 is it. Yay.

I purchased my 60GB PS3 in July 2007 and I must say that I'm extremely happy with it! The machine is frickin awesome with its built in WiFi, blu-ray, backwards capatibilty, bliuetooth and the fact its futureproof with firmware updates, watch out or the 360 will be a dinosaur...adapt or die!! Speaking on the console war, its pretty much an arms race and will be very similar to the HD vs. Blu Ray format war except that Microsoft will not concede victory to Sony, they'll just make a another POS RROD (Red Ring of Death) machine next time around. In the meantime, the true blockbuster PS3 games are scheduled to be released in the coming months and that is where/when the real value of the PS3 will shine through. MGS4, without a doubt, will own the market when its released in June! MGS4 has the potential to knock the 360 off its sales perch and dominate the gaming industry. Everyone talks about the PS3 weak launch titles but its not where you start, its where you finish that counts. Everyone talks about how great the Xbox 360 is but they neglect to mention how much money ($1Billion) was spent on the RROD warranty subsidy, the fact that the system was a loss leader for Microsoft and hasn't turned a profit for quite sometime, its poor execution of R&D. People also talk about the the 360's great gaming library, but who has a better gaming library than Sony???? NO ONE!! PS One and PS2 were both killer apps, so why shouldn't we expect the same for its little brother PS3??
