Report: iPhone Developer Kit Running Late

Sounds like third-party coders may have to wait a few more weeks before Apple releases its software development kit. Also: Are updated MacBook Pros on tap?

Both BusinessWeek and 9 to 5 Mac are reporting that Apple's SDK for the iPhone—a kit that will, at long last, allow third-party developers to write their own, no-hacks-required applications for the iPhone—may be delayed by up to three weeks (the kit was originally promised for this month). No comment from Apple, of course, and no word on exactly what's causing the delay.

That's a bummer for those of us who've been waiting patiently for Apple to open up the iPhone to third-party software development, a move that should result in a galaxy of cool iPhone apps, ranging from offline RSS readers and instant messaging apps to games and banking programs.

Plenty of developers are already writing their own applications for the iPhone, but they all require that you a) have a cell or Wi-Fi connection, or b) don't mind hacking the iPhone, a dicey endeavor that's not recommended for neophytes.

Meanwhile, the Apple grapevine is buzzing about a refresh of the MacBook Pro line, possibly as early as this week. AppleInsider has it that the rumored updates will include pumped-up Intel Core 2 Duo Penryn processors and the multi-touch trackpad found on the new MacBook Air; however, no changes to the MacBook Pro's shell are expected.

Again, all rumor, folks. I'll post an update as soon as I hear anything new.

Bummer. I bought an ipod touch a few days ago because i knew that the SDK was being released. I would of bought an iphone but i cant change my contract for another few months. I hope this doesnt get delayed to long because those web apps are useless. I dont want to "Jailbreak" my touch either because i just spent 300.00 on it. I really wanted that iano app and the guitar app. Those looked fun. Also, i really want some type of money management app as well.

Wow, you guys aure are patient. My Treo 700 has TONS of software available and I could watch streaming video OUT OF THE BOX. The only thing it doesn't do that the iphone does is the rotating screen thing, how will I live without that feature? Don't you realize this is the way of Apple? They release a device but third party developers are left out. I really don't think there are going to be many 3rd party apps available for the iphone even when the SDK is released. The iphone is just a sliver of the cell phone market, just as macs are just a sliver of the PC market. Sure you'll probably be able to get stuff like Quickbooks, and Peachtree but the developers are probably going to look at who actually bought the iphone. These are mostly people that didn't really need a phone with PDA capabilities, just Apple people that wanted more Apple hardware and trend followers. Very few busines oriented poeple actualy bought these things. I do a LOT of work for Wachovia (I cover most of Southern California) and haven't seen one person at any bank, mortgage or securities site that uses an iphone for work or even owns an iphone. About 75% of the securities site people have PDA phones as do a large portion of the bank and mortgage site management as well. Well, good luck with your phone, hope you get some software you don't have to hack your phone to use sometime in the near future. /evil laugh
