You'd have to pay full price for a contract-free phone, however. Also mandated in the proposal: better coverage maps, no penalties for canceling contracts in the first 30 days, and detailed cost breakdowns for wireless plans.

that will work only if the usage rates go down. if the carriers no longer subsidize the cost of the phone they should be made to pass the savings on to the consumer
That already exists, it's called "prepaid" phone service
Why not give the same break as the att house phones. Att is getting rich off of these phones. We don't have to buy our house phones. Give us a break!
Yes there is prepaid service now but try and find a WM6 capable phone that you can go prepaid with. I haven't been able to find one.
