Looks like Apple is finally ready to unleash its promised iPhone software development kit. Also on the agenda: "some exciting new enterprise features." Do I smell Exchange support?
Bloomberg News is reporting that Apple will release the SDK, which will allow developers to build sanctioned, third-party applications for the heretofore closed-off iPhone, at an event next Thursday in Cupertino. CNET News.com got its hands on an invite for the event, which Apple describes as a "town hall" to discuss its software plans for the iPhone.
The invitation also hints at "some exciting new enterprise features," according to CNET, which may indicate better integration between the iPhone and corporate e-mail servers—maybe even Exchange support. Up to now, Exchange users have had to make do with fetching their corporate messages over IMAP, which doesn't help when it comes to synching contacts or events.
The news comes a day after Apple released a new software update for the iPhone. The latest update (version 1.1.4) didn't add any apparent new features, but many speculated that it paves the way for applications created by the upcoming SDK.
Apple originally promised the iPhone SDK for February, but hey—better late than never. Personally, I'm hoping a few third-party apps are already set to go next week, but don't get your hopes up.
OK, iPhone owners: what kind of third-party applications are you hoping for?

I would like to see a bluetooth mutli-media card reader combined with iPhone software to be able to edit, crop, caption and e-mail high-res pictures off of my camera's Compact Flash card. Mitcheck in Miami
There are just some thing you shouldn't do on a device with a tiny screen. Photo editing for starters, you need to see the whole image, not sections at a time. Maybe a little cropping and some touchups but not full on editing. Gaming needs to go away from cell phones, just plain stay away! Leave that to platforms designed for it like the PSP and the Gameboy whatchamacallit.

I would love to see an onboard RSS Aggregator (Podcatcher) application for the iPod Touch so I don't have to be tethered to a computer/iTunes to acquire my favorite Podcast programs when mobile.
