Sony pulls the plug on Trinitron CRTs

The move marks the end of an era, as Sony throws its weight behind fast-selling LCD TVs. Long live Trinitron!

Sony has confirmed (via AFP and MarketWatch) that it will stop making tube-based TVs by the end of the month. Sony had actually ceased production of CRTs in Japan back in 2004, according to MarketWatch, but it was still churning out "Trinitron"-branded tube sets in Singapore and Malaysia for sale in Latin America and Asia.

The news is sad but inevitable, with the rapid rise in flat-panel TV sales taking a serious toll on the CRT market. I was a CRT holdout myself until just a couple of years ago, when I finally replaced my 32-inch Sony WEGA HDTV (my second WEGA, actually) with a 42-inch Westinghouse LCD TV (since replaced by a 46-inch Sony Bravia XBR4—and yes, I love it).

And indeed, many videophiles will still tell you that the latest flat-panel sets still can't hold a candle to CRTs in terms of video quality. My old Sony WEGA tube-based HDTV, for example, had the deepest, darkest black levels I've ever seen in a set, even compared to Pioneer's Kuro plasma line.

That said, my 32-inch WEGA weighed in at an astounding 250 pounds (the woman I sold it to actually brought along two personal trainers, who hauled the set away on a hand truck), and let's face it—46 inches beats 32 any day of the week, even if contrast ratios still fall short of CRT standards.

So, I'm curious—anyone out there still have a CRT TV? And if so, you planning on sticking with it, or are you ready to make the jump to flat panel?

I still have a 32inch Philips CRT. I will stick with it until it brakes down

It had to happen sometime soon given the times.

I plan to stick with it. I guess everyone but me has tons of money. Why should I get rid of a perfectly good WEGA because of a 32" screen. Great picture, no payments and I do watch TV a good bit. As to flat screen there is nothing anyone can do once the company decides to quit making the CRT televisions no matter how good. That question is moot. When the time arrives that I need a new TV I will have to buy a flat screen and that is ok. Just because Sony stops making Trinitron doesn't mean I have to keep up with the Jones and run out and buy a new TV. Don't plan to move it until it dies. D.A.

could not agree more with the fact that crt tv's have a great picture. just sold my 3 year old hd sony wega for a sony bravia. like the pic on the bravia, but loved the pic on the wega. may be moving multiple times here soon and felt the bravia would be easier to move and set-up.

Last year I bough a Flat Screen TV for the living room(42"), and put the 26 inch in my room. This year for Christmas I got a flat screen (32") for my room, and last week I got one for the spare room(20"). Now I have 3 flat screens and I am taking my Tube into work so we have something to watch during lunch...works out pretty well I guess
