MacBook Air stumps TSA agents, owner misses flight

The suspiciously thin, port-free laptop sends airport security into a tizzy, until cooler heads prevail. Maybe it's time for some tech briefings at the TSA, no?

On his blog, programmer Michael Nygard (by way of the Unofficial Apple Weblog) writes that during a recent trip through the airport, his solid-state MacBook Air stopped TSA agents—puzzled by its lack of rear-facing ports or a standard hard drive—in their tracks.

Nygard said the agents put him and his suspicious "device" in a holding cubicle as security staffers huddled nearby, looking at X-ray printouts of the sinister-looking Air and scratching their heads.

A younger TSA agent—who, apparently, was aware of Apple's newest laptop—tried explaining to the group that the Air uses solid-state memory in place of a traditional hard drive. The senior staffer, however, was still reluctant to let it go: "New products on the market? They haven't been TSA approved. Probably shouldn't be permitted," Nygard writes.

Finally, after booting up the Air and running a program, the agents let Nygard go, he said—but only after he'd missed his flight.

I've been hearing stories like these all too often, which leads to the question: how exactly are TSA agents being trained, anyway? How about, I dunno, some regular briefings on the latest gadgets that might be making their way through security checkpoints? And while TSA agents are wasting time fussing with laptops, undercover investigators with bomb parts in their bags have been sailing though security checkpoints.

Anyone else out there get stopped by airport security because of a "suspicious" gadget in their luggage? Feel free to vent right here.

TSA is a fiasco. By the way, where did the $60B go that was suppose to shore up security at the nation's top 22 airports? Apparently, it cannot be accounted for - much like other Homeland Secuirty shopping sprees.

While this is a pretty embarrassing incident (for the TSA), it would be very difficult to keep every single agent up to date about every single technological advancement that happens. Also one of the agents did know about the MacAir, but the senior staff in charge was reluctant to let it go because it wasn't TSA approved and was just being pre-cautious.

This is pure B.S. more hype for apple, first some shmuck through one out now someones being held up for a search because of one. I suppose they let him go after he showed them how "trully simple and easy to use the apple air really is" right?

I got stopped for having a chocolate bar wrapped in foil that was in the same pocket as my digital watch. After they took EVERYTHING out of my carry-on bag and stuffed it back in, they asked me what I was thinking putting the two together, like I had done something wrong.

my wife and were headed up to san francisco for a short weekend and the TSA agent said "What the @#$%?" as my bag went thru the xray. he then asked me to open my backpack in order to look at what was in my tech-filled pouch. he held me until they could confirm that the wall charger i had for my ipod was in fact a charger for an ipod. how rad is that?

How much has apple paid for this guy to write a story about a laptop which isnt selling well? Who knows, but with all the news going around how has this story reached the front page?

I didn't get stopped, but I did get a nail clipper (now legal), a lighter (questionable), and a stun gun (pretty sure that one is NOT allowed) on a plane leaving O'Hare. Guess being a young Caucasian girl will get you through any security checkpoint.

Not very believable at all. This is not within the TSA operating procedure for suspicious devices. I smell an Apple propagandist at work. lame.

TSA is notoriously stupid, their hiring process is insanely bureaucratic and shows the worst bits of the government too. After doing amazing on every stage of the testing (over an 8 month period no less!) I got to the final stage, the background check. I was denied the job with no reason given, so I did some digging and the reason was...outstanding loans. Those loans? Student loans...yep you read it right, TSA has a policy in place so they are completely bureaucratically unable to hire college graduates!

I was stopped in London Heathrow about a year ago. I had electronics such as video and regular cameras, and souvenirs and to cylindrical containers that had beer glasses and they thought I was transporting a complicated bomb. I was lucky to get stopped twice in that airport.

T.S.A HAS EVERY RIGHT TO DO WHATEVER THEY WANT. AT THE END NO MATTER WHAT THEY CHECK OR HOW MANY TIMES THEY CHECK, PEOPLE "TERRORIST" ARE GOING TO ACHIEVE THEIR OBJECTIVE. WE HAVE THE POWER. IF YOU WANT, I WANT , IF THEY WANT, WE ALL CAN DO IT WITHIN..

"I think the TSA needs to figure out a set policy. They just can't make up some random rules for something. Oh yeah, that's right! Another government agency besides the IRS that loves to prey on innocent people with complicated rule books and laws. Keep it simple, people! We'll all be happier." Are you kidding? Every day some psycho terrorist is thinking of new way's to blow people up. Good job TSA and keep it up. I'd rather be safe than simple.

Was stopped by TSA for having an otoscope and ophthalmoscope. It's basic medical student/doctor equipment! Missed my flight too...very frustrating

Lol I got hassled for the exact opposite reason. My laptop is a CLEVO D901C...in other words it's atleast twice as thick as any regular laptop on the market. It has 3HD's and 2 Vid cards. They weren't liking it.
