For the second month in a row, the PlayStation 3 edged the Xbox 360 in terms of monthly sales. Is the once-struggling PS3 on a roll?

Ars Technica got its hands on the latest sales figures for gaming consoles, and the numbers speak for themselves. The Wii, as usual, trumped its console competition with 432,000 units sold in February (the handheld DS moved an amazing 597,000 units), while the PlayStation 2—still quite a hit with gamers, apparently—came in at an impressive 351,800 units. No shockers there.

Here's the surprise, however: The PlayStation 3, which snared fourth place with 280,000 consoles sold. Meanwhile, the Xbox 360 brought up the rear with just 254,600 units in February—the second straight month that it's trailed the PS3.

For its part, Microsoft is blaming the Xbox 360's sagging sales figures on low supply due to stronger-than-expected holiday sales, and it points out that five of the 10 top-selling games are 360 titles (including the 360 version of Call of Duty 4, which again lead the video game pack).

But after many months of being everyone's favorite whipping boy, it seems the PS3 has caught a second wind.

Indeed, what was once perceived as the PlayStation 3's greatest weakness—its built-in Blu-ray drive, which jacked up the console's price and delayed the PS3's launch by a year—suddenly looks like a strength, now that Blu-ray has won the HD format war.

Also, the PS3 finally has a line-up of game worth talking about, including the Tomb Raider-esque Uncharted and its best-selling version of Devil May Cry 4. Ars Technica also points out some potential—and exclusive—blockbusters in the PS3 pipe, including Metal Gear Solid 4 and Gran Turismo 5: Prologue.

So, what do you think? Is the PS3 poised to grab the Xbox 360's lead? Or is the 360 bound to make a comeback?

I think the PS3 is only going to continue to gain momentum. Pretty soon it will be leaving the X360 in its wake completely. The Blu-ray ability is the main reason I bought the unit in the first place. So unless X360 starts offering a Blu-ray edition (which will likely happen) PS3 should be the winner between those two consoles.

The 360 isnt loosing. 2 months have gone by that the ps3 has out sold the 360, and the ps3 didnt win by much. Plus, all the top 20 game lists ive seen show the 360 dominating. So who is really losing? The ps3 is still playin catch up.

Lets be real here. I have been a PS system fan for years and I love the RPG games and I am looking forward to see what happens. Now that the price for the PS3 is down to $399 and Blue Ray has won the HD wars, it is a better deal and gamers know that. Do I think that it is going to dominate the market? NO! Certain aspects about the 360 make it too good of a system to count it out. I do feel that that the field is more compeditive and level. People who are 360 fans are going to swear that it is the best just like fans for the PS3 and for Wii. It is going to come down to games. That is what it came down to for me. I choose the system that had more games that I wanted to play. PS still has some gound to make up on.

Two Words, "Blu Ray". This is the only reason PS3 has had a short term gain. The Next Gen Dvd war is over and with the PS3 having the same price as a standard Blu Ray Player many consumers have taken the plunge. Microsoft is in the works on introducing a Blu Ray Add on for it's 360 console. It's only a matter of time before PS3 is once again at the bottom of the "food chain". -Josh-

I never even considered a PS3 until I bought a new HDTV and now I want Blu-Ray. With the PS3 I get a Blu-Ray player that can be updated via the Internet with new firmware. Oh, and apparently it plays games or something! :) Xbox? I already have a PC gaming rig so there's no need.
