Did you get your soon-to-be-obsolete HD DVD deck from Best Buy? If so, the retailer wants to give you a $50 gift card for your trouble.
According to the
NYT's Bits blog, anyone who bought an HD DVD player from Best Buy by February 23 (the day that Toshiba announced it was
ceding the HD format war to Blu-ray) is eligible for a gift card.
Those who bought a player over the Best Buy Web site, joined the retailer's "rewards" program, or bought an extended warranty should receive a card automatically; everyone else will need to cough up a receipt.
It's the latest move by retailers to make up for the death of the HD DVD format; just a couple of weeks ago, Circuit City announced (quietly) that it would
extend its trade-in policy for HD DVD players to 90 days, two months longer than the standard 30-day rule.
Best Buy also announced that it'll buy back HD DVD players through its trade-in site, it's not clear how much credit you'll get in return. (It's worth noting that HD DVD decks are currently going for just $50 or so on eBay, so I wouldn't count on a big payoff.)

Amazon is selling these full price at $50 for new. I know third party sellers are probably selling it higher than that, but Amazone the actual site is selling at just $50, no tax for many states and free shipping offered.
