Solar-powered MP3 players are all well and good, but what'll you do when the clouds gather? Behold the crank-powered Eco Media Player, which will keep you dancing in the dark (sorry, couldn't resist).
The Eco EMP-MX71 ($200, discovered by the Boy Genius Report) comes armed with 2GB of memory (expandable thanks to the SD memory card slot), a 1.8-inch display, music playback (MP3, WMA, ASF, WAV, and OGG files are supported), a video player (WMV, AVI, and MPEG files will work, with help from a file conversion utility), and voice/in-line recording.
Nice, but here's the kicker: You can power the Eco with the built-in hand crank, which (according to the specs, at least) gives you 40 minutes of music playback for every minute of winding. The crank will also charge dead cell phones (a series of adapters is included). And don't worry, if you're sick of cranking, you can always power up the player via its USB port.
Other features on the EMP-MX71 include an LED flashlight, a photo viewer, and a text file reader.

That's clever. :]
Gpasewicz - it says 40 minutes play time for every minute cranked
Batteries today only have a certain number of charge/recharges in their life. Laptops, MP3 players, whatever the battery, they get less effective over time.
