LAS VEGAS - With its sleek design, flashy menus, haptic feedback, and full-on 3G access, this touchscreen delight for Sprint users looks to be one of the strongest iPhone competitors to date. Read on for my hands-on impressions.
Announced Tuesday here at CTIA, the Instinct (set for release in mid-June)
looks like a virtual clone of the iPhone, but it delivers many of the features
missing from Apple's red-hot handset, including 3G access for speedy browsing
and downloads, a replaceable battery, expandable memory, and haptic feedback
for the touchscreen - that is, a slight vibration each time you tap the screen.
This key feature is sorely missing on the iPhone.
I got an early, hands-on look at the Instinct a couple of weeks ago in New
York, and I have to say, it's the most impressive iPhone contender I've seen
yet-or at least until I try out LG's
touchscreen Vu, which is also set to debut here at CTIA.
The Instinct certainly scores in the looks department, with its smooth,
jet-black face (à la the iPhone) and 3-inch display, along with three
keys-Back, Home, and Call-just beneath.
Measuring 4.6" by 2.2" by 0.49", the Instinct is a tad narrower
but a bit thicker than the iPhone, and it's also a bit lighter, weighing in at
4.4 ounces.
The Instinct's sleek, animated touch interface looks promising, if still a bit
rough-and-ready. The unit I tried was still in the testing stage, so I'll hold
off on direct iPhone comparisons until I've seen a final device.
Still, a lot of the UI innovations that I love on the iPhone are right here. Navigating
on the touchscreen was a pleasure, and I liked the roulette wheel-like
scrolling through long lists of items.
Another ace up the Instinct's sleeve is its access to Sprint's 3G "EV-DO
Rev. A" data network, which means speedy Web surfing, full-track downloads
from the Sprint Music Store (which got a badly needed makeover for the
Instinct), video clips from Sprint TV, and the ability to tether the phone to
your laptop for on-the-road Net access.
More good stuff: GPS navigation combined with voice commands, allowing you to
bark "Go pizza" to the Instinct and get turn-by-turn directions to
the nearest slice.
And here's a feature that travelers will love: the Instinct's removable
battery, good for swapping out during, say, coast-to-coast flights. The
iPhone's battery is-as many have groused about before-sealed in its shell,
meaning that if it runs out of juice and you're nowhere near an AC outlet,
you're out of luck.
Rounding out the Instinct's features are microSD memory expansion (up to 8GB),
a 2MP camera, stereo Bluetooth, and a media manager for sideloading music and
videos.
Good stuff, although I should point out that the Instinct's Web browser (or at
least the version I saw) looked pretty clunky compared to the iPhone's, and the
Instinct's POP/IMAP/Outlook Web access messaging won't be able to match the
iPhone's upcoming support for Microsoft Exchange servers. There's also the
iPhone's potential as a software platform to consider, now that the iPhone SDK
is out in the wild.
And of course, by the time the Instinct arrives in Sprint stores (sometime
in mid-June), we may well have a new 3G iPhone on our hands.
No definitive word on pricing for the Instinct quite yet, although I'm told it
could be in the $200-250 range.
So, what do you think? Do we have an iPhone killer in our midst?

The iPhone has been surpassed? No way! The iPhone's clever marketing strategy was supposed to prevent this fate, the inevitable fate of every other device after about six months.
"haptic feedback for the touchscreen - that is, a slight vibration each time you tap the screen. This key feature is sorely missing on the iPhone." I don't get what's so awesome about a phone that shakes every time you touch it. I would prefer it NOT shake and just do the job. The iPhone emphasizes the icon you press to tell you that you got the right button. I think this "sorely missing" feature should be kept out of the iPhone. And as for everything else, it's great for people who need extra memory but the 16 GB iPhone works great. As for replacable battery, well, if you have a laptop, you can charge the iPhone. And the iPhone's downloads are speedy enough for me. The only thing that looks good on the Instinct is the price range mentioned.
iPhone Killer? If the best Samsung can do is copy the iPhone and add a couple features, then I doubt it. If someone wants to kill the iPhone then they are going to have to do to Apple what Apple did to everyone else last year. Simply copying them ain't going to work. Microsoft and their Zune should be a prime example. Zune has done not much original or creative, thus they are still insignificant in the music side of things. As always, it more than just about the hardware. It about the whole package. And why is there such a desire to "kill" the iPhone? Shame on Apple for creating a great product.
Well, it ain't no Apple, but then again, you also get a lower initial price tag because of that. Personally, I think the best part is that it's a really good phone option for non-AT&T users.
"No definitive word on pricing for the Instinct quite yet, although I'm told it could be in the $200-250 range." I'm amazed at how nonchalant you were in writing that line as my jaw dropped at the low price compared to iPhone's $499+ price tag.
wow i can't wait for it to come out cos the phone looks cool and better than the iPhone.....
another clone? with the chinese now korean clones? bought a chinese one and does not compare .. no java no internal memory you get what you pay for stick with nokia they were first out with touch phone with the 7710 model awsome had that 2 years before the iphone:)
I totally agree, from the looks of it, the samsung is a pure imitation of the iPhone. The iPhone has a unique elegant and stylish setting, and I wouldn't like my phone to vibrate everytime I touch it.
What OS will the 3G run? Palm or Windows Mobile? IR capability with previous Sprint smart phones?
people will bow...
No WiFi!!!! Phone company is out to get consumer!
The i-phone is already out-of-date. They rolled out their first version using antiquated 2g technology. Their phone won't even work on 3g networks and is therefore useless in Japan and Korea. I'm glad Samsung is pressuring them to roll-out a better phone. the first i-phone is a nice product, for 2004.
does it have the voice mail optoins iphone has?
It's Good! Apple needs some competition so they will continue to make the Iphone better! Iphone would be great if they just improved on a couple of basic things!
i hope this kills the iphone. i have an iphone & apple just cant seem to get it right. 1- u cant see picture texts without going online & typing in some annoyingly long id & password!! lol (come on) 2- u cant shoot video on the iphone (this is 2008, right)? 3-the network is soooooo slow 4- i dropped my iphone & the glass ----- tered & theres no insurance offered ugh -come on apple, dont we give u enough of our hard earned money?? get it right!!
I have the iPhone and got Nextel, only for the 2 way. If they put them together?? I will be one of the frist to get the new phone and say money on bills!!!
i'm a bit tired of reporters comparing every good touch screen out there with the iPhone. many touch screens were already patented or in development before apple got off its butt to make a mobile. HTC and samsung to name a few have some fantastic mobiles which easily kick the competitions arse across the board. granted, apple make some pretty good stuff, they are still 2 years away from contending with the bigger boys in the mobile world. all they are bringing to the market is a over-hyped name.
Crapalicious!
A replaceable battery, expandable memory and 3G access is what the iPhone desparately lacks. As for GPS navigation, it will depend on how fast and accurate it is. iPhone does cell tower triangulation to pinpoint your current location. It is fast and reasonably accurate. Will I dump my iPhone any time soon? I doubt it, but it does seem like the Samsung is good competition. I smell another iPhone product update coming soon......

I don't know what its all the fuss about the Iphone, they stole the technology, Nokia had a similar version way before apple invented the Iphone, also if you really want to see the future in phones check out www.openmoko.com can't wait till they start distributing them.
