Best bone-rattling scenes for your home theater

Not only did Optimus Prime and Megatron manage to trash downlown L.A. in Transformers, but they’ll also rattle the teeth out of your guests' heads (name the quote, anyone?) while you’re showing off your home theater. Check out some of the best scenes for putting your pumped-up surround-sound system through its paces.

Electronic House just published a cool list of scenes that’ll shake your buddies to the core—or, as the case may be, wow them with subtle ambient effects. Among their picks:

2001: A Space Odyssey (Blu-ray/HD DVD): The apes’ discovery of the Monolith and Dave’s mind-bending journey beyond Jupiter. I’d also add the Strauss-accompanied shuttle flights to the orbiting space station and on to the Moon.

Pride and Prejudice (Dolby TrueHD 5.1): No, this Jane Austin epic isn't exactly a barn-burner of a movie, but Electronic House rightly points out that the ambient effects (especially during the party sequence) are impressive. Indeed, quiet scenes often bring out the best in surround systems (or point out the flaws in cheap ones).

Independence Day (DTS-HD 5.1 on Blu-ray): Electronic House likes the iconic White House destruction scene, although my favorite is the deep, rumbling opening, when the ominous shadow of the invading saucer crawls over the craggy lunar landscape.

Star Wars Episode One: The Phantom Menace (Dolby Digital EX): Bad, bad movie ("Yipeeee!"), but the pod race is a staple of home theater demos.

Transformers (Dolby Digital Plus on HD DVD): You can’t beat the furious battle at the end, especially as one of the Transformers (sorry, I forget which one) leaps over a pair of oncoming missles; note the quiet, surreal moment when the cowering young woman screams as the robot flies over her.

Electronic House lists a half-dozen more eardrum-splitting scenes, which you can check out here; below is a list of some of my personal favorites:

Casino Royale (Dolby Digital on DVD, or PCM 5.1 on Blu-ray): A couple of scenes stand out: the African chase near the beginning, and the amazing Miami International sequence.

The Empire Strikes Back (Dolby Digital EX): The Imperial Walkers, followed by the Millennium Falcon fleeing through the asteroid field. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve blasted these scenes, on both LaserDisc (DD AC-3) and DVD.

Blade II (DTS): The attack in the vampire nightclub, with the big, thumping beats punctuated by gunfire and the thuds of Lighthammer’s... well, hammer (all right, enough with the snickering).

Revenge of the Sith (Dolby Digital EX): The massive assault over Coruscant at the very beginning.

U-571 (DTS): The sound of the rain as Matthew McConaughey, Jon Bon Jovi, and the rest row toward the enemy sub, and the unnerving screech as the torpedo slides across the hull of the captured U-boat.

I could go on and on here, but I’d rather hear your suggestions first. Make sure to mention the particular soundtrack (Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby TrueHD, etc.) along with the movie and scene. Lock and load!

My favorite scenes are in Heat, the shootouts. But I saw you just posted that. So just wanted to second that motion.

Startrek 6, Undiscovered Country - opening scene when the Klingon moon Praxis explodes. Opening music..... silence ..... Explosion. It was a favorite for home theater demos when it first came out on DVD.

Any of the Dogfight scenes from the Blu-ray version of FlyBoys in DTS-HD Master Audio (even better in 7.1!) especially the one where they take down the Zeppelin!!

I still use Godzilla (the remake) in my speaker tests. Pretty much any scene works.

Finding Nemo in Dolby Digital- a superbly mastered movie. 1) "Sharks", Chapter 8, when the minefield explodes. The little "plink" before the mines pop is awesome. 2) Darla in chapter 25 (I think), every time she taps the tank there is a monstrous bass boom. Add to that the fact she's singing "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" in the background and it is amazing. I recommend starting at chapter 24 and fast forwarding a little bit since this part is right at the beginning of chapter 25. 3) The Abyss scene when the sub shifts and slides. All of "War of the Worlds" with Tom Cruise in DTS. Easily one of the most challenging bass movies out there, no subwoofer will escape unscathed. Famous scenes include 1) Pods emerging, which has 10Hz pulses (most humans can't hear beats below 20Hz, but if you have equipment able to reproduce it, you'll see your pant legs flapping...but no sound? hahaha) 2) The lightning strikes scene (more 10Hz pulses) 3) The laser scene shortly after the pods emerge from the ground is devastating- as the lasers pan from side to side you get a sickening whooOOOOMMMMPPPHHH from the subwoofer 4) Bridge destruction (immediately after the pods emerge/laser scene)- total mindless chaos and noise. WOTW is a horrible movie in terms of acting, but giving Steven Spielberg basically free reign on sound means an absolutely nuts soundtrack- you really need to hear it in DTS to experience it. Word of warning though- these are extremely loud, extremely bass intensive scenes, you could easily blow your speakers if you run this too loud. Lord of the Rings- Fellowship of the Ring (extended edition- DTS ES)- When Sauron implodes at the beginning of the movie, there's a big bass sweep as the shock wave spreads out over the land. About 5 minutes into the start of the movie. Lord of the Rings- The Return of the King (extended edition- DTS ES)- 1) The Battle of Pelennor Fields is very dramatic, and the charge of the olyphants is another great heavy bass scene immediately after that. 2) Inside Mount Doom- Can't reveal more without spoilers, but this features a 5Hz heart beat sound. God help you if your system can pump this scene out.

Who can forget the opening scene of "Top Gun?" Where the Aircraft carrier deck scene is punctuated by a screeching full afterburner launch, then explodes into "Danger Zone" My neighbors hate this scene...heh heh heh "Jumping off the deck, shove it into overdrive..."

It's not a great movie but "open range" has some really good sound also,

Twister (dolby Digital), every time the tornado appears, such as in the first scene.
