First announced way, way back in July of last year, the nifty, wireless balance board accessory for the Wii finally has a North American release date: May 19. Get ready to engage those abs.

The Wii Fit bundle (available in Japan since last December) will sell for $89.99, according to Crave—not exactly cheap, but at least it'll come bundled with a battery of exercises—involving yoga, aerobics, strength training, and balance—that’ll get you off the couch and, with any luck, make you break a sweat.

IGN (via Yahoo! Games) has a thorough preview of Wii Fit, but I’ll tick off some of the main points: You get the wireless, plastic balance board (which, apparently, supports a whopping 660 pounds, although it stops measuring over 330 pounds) plus the battery of 40 mini-games and exercises.

Among them: strength-training exercises, including a push-up/yoga combo (which sounds devilishly difficult), single-leg extensions, arm/leg lifts, a variety of squats and lunges, and side planks (ouch). There’s also plenty of aerobic action, including steps, runs, and rhythm boxing. Then there’s the yoga, complete with your standard deep breathing, half moons, a potpourri of poses, you name it. This ain't no button-mashing on the couch.

What makes Wii Fit more fun than your standard exercise DVD is the on-screen trainer (either male or female, as IGN notes) who critiques your form and doles out encouragement, as needed.

Of course, the coolest element of Wii Fit is the wireless balance board, which incorporates two plastic pads—one for each foot—that precisely measure you weight and balance.

From the demos I’ve seen, the board does an uncanny job of detecting your overall stance and posture; indeed, based on your weight and balance, it’ll compute your body mass index (BMI) and tell you if you’re overweight, underweight, or just right. The Wii Fit software will also track your BMI daily and tell you your progress over time.

Early reviews have been generally positive; for example, Chris Kohler at Wired News tried Wii Fit for about a month and came away pretty happy, calling it a "convenient and helpful way for me to get back in shape." Keep in mind, however, that Kohler didn't so much lose weight as build muscle (not such a bad thing, considering that you're playing a video game).

I haven't had a chance to try Wii Fit myself, but the demo during last year's E3 gaming conference looked pretty impressive; I especially liked the soccer ball head-butting game, which lets you (natch) head-butt a torrent of virtual soccer balls, all from the comfort of the balance board—nice. (Hmmmm...how about a surfing game? Or skateboarding?)

So, who out there's looking forward to Wii Fit? Anyone else tried it? What about the price tag?

If you call this a weight-lost 'Fit' machine and buy one for that purpose I gurantee none of those people will get what they want, seriously...

as a fellow gamer i know video games are an obsession, here's another reason why it will continue to be so

It's so easy for everyone to say, "Just unplug and get outside!" This game could be the necessary stepping stone to help chronic gamers and couch potatoes get to that point. Stop hating just because you've got the motivation/drive/ability that some don't.

When you think of it, a gym membership costs alot more over time, than this machine, and how convenient that you can get a full work out in your living room rather than hoofing it to the gym!

I think this can be usful for kids and adults that may be out of shape, because adults don't have jobs that are very exiting most of the time and kids usually sit around and eat junk food.

Wow. To those of you saying this is a bogus way to get exercise. I am a personal trainer and would recommend this to everyone as a FUN way to do things with out have to always leave your home. No big equipment to buy, and while it is $90, how much are you going to spend on work-out tapes that cannot correct you, weigh you, or help encourage. It is a wonderful use of video games and a way to get everyone involved! I love it. And yes, you can build muscle and lose weight.Just because there are no weights involved, simple resistance techniques that it teaches are very similar to using a weight machine. Great for all ages, and people of shapes and sizes. I loved using it at E3 and cannot wait for it to come out in stores!

I went to Japan for the Christmas holidays and had the opportunity to try this out and it was awesome. The yoga was the hardest due to holding positions for long periods of time. It made me sweat and I am not a fat fatty. This will be good exercise for anybody. When you get a chance to try it make sure to do the downhill skiing.

I don't know about you but usualy when I take away the gaming system the kids still rather sit on the couch bord than go out and play outside or exersize or jog. They don't care about exersize or outdoor activities at all they rather play with there computers all day or game consoles this is a great way to get them (and me) to get some real exersize. Wii sports has been great as have other Wii titles I am hopeing this is another great game to keep our kids active and help burn off some of that energy that keeps them up late

erinshesse is retarded, probably a "fat-fatty" also LOL. You can gain muscle by simply getting off the internet and walking around the house you moron, so YES doing a workout, whether its from the gym or the WII..will help. The joke is, you spent time making a stupid comment.. nice :-)

I have been looking forward to this product since I had first heard about it last summer! I love the fact that it is both a game and something geared at getting fit and healthy. What many nay-sayers fail to understand is that for many people it is hard to be motivated to go and do some of exercise because people lose interest and while many gamers would like to stay gaming a concept like this is wonderful because it allows for them to stay engaged while exercising. From what I have read there are plenty of exercises that can allow for a buildup of muscle (I know downward facing dog alone can bite one in the butt lol). And those that don't think your heart rate can get up with a video game, try Kinetic for Playstation2 that game can leave you winded easily. Don't hate new ideas be glad people are traying to take a step toward being healthy and taking care of themselves.

I think that this device is way overpriced. If you are looking to get rid of that stomach then go to the gym. You will get rid of your stomach faster like that. If this was ten dollars then buy it see what it does. But don't waste your money on something stupid. That's all I'm saying.

this is great! I want one right now in fact- even if you do other types of exercise and diet- the wii will track your progress and that right there is worth the money. I dig it There is alot to be said about just getting people off of the couch.... even if it just stops people for twenty minutes from thoughtless eating habits

Posted by bluesexton.....As for the comment by Posted by #2, I am so happy that I am not alone in being "tech literate!" As for your problem, I do suggest that you contact either Yahoo! or your internet provider! Good Luck. This Wii Fit sounds like a great idea and will definitely look into this.
