"Hound" pulls the trigger on PS3, Blu-ray

After much hemming and hawing, I finally gave in and ordered my very own PlayStation 3—which also means I’m at last going Blu. It’s a big step, but the timing—both for the PS3 platform and Blu-ray itself—seems right.

Here are the details: I bought the 40GB version of the PS3, along with a Belkin HDMI switcher (I’m already using the other HDMI inputs on my Sony Bravia, and I don’t have an HDMI receiver—or at least, not yet), a pair of HDMI cables (the PS3 doesn’t ship with one, annoyingly), a Toslink cable for digital audio, and Nyko’s Blue Wave remote—or more specifically, its IR dongle, which should let me use my Harmony universal remote with the stubbornly non-IR-supporting PS3.

My first Blu-ray movie? “Casino Royale” (since I already own “Blade Runner,” “The Shining,” and “2001” on HD DVD). And my first PS3 game (besides the bundled "Motorstorm"[Update: Turns out "Motorstorm" doesn't come with the 40GB PS3, as I discovered the hard way]): "Unreal Tournament 3."

Just for the record, my Xbox 360 isn’t going anywhere—I’ll just be one of those two-console gamers for now. Hopefully my old Xbox (my second, actually) and the new PS3 will play nice together.

What made me finally break down and get the PS3? I have to say, Blu-ray’s victory over HD DVD was one of the deciding factors. And not only is the $400 40GB PS3 one of the most affordable Blu-ray players on the market, but it’s also the most future proof, as the recent software updates for BD-Live (which allows for Net-enabled features and downloads) and the lossless DTS-HD Master Audio format have shown.

And then there’s the gaming. The PS3 had a weak start with some so-so launch titles (“Resistance” being the one game that people seemed to really like), but now we’re seeing some actual gotta-have exclusives coming down the pike, including “Uncharted” and “Unreal Tournament 3” (well, at least until UT3’s upcoming arrival for the Xbox 360). Also, I’m glad that Sony finally got with the program with its soon-to-arrive rumbling SIXAXIS controller.

Finally, there’s PlayStation Home, the "Second Life"-like world for PlayStation gamers that’s set to launch later this year. I admit, I was skeptical of Home when it was first announced—what’s so great about avatars, anyway?—but still, I’m intrigued, and I want to be ready when Home opens its doors.

I’m expecting my new PS3 to arrive on my doorstep tomorrow (Friday the 18th), so I’ll make sure to check in once I’ve got it up and running.

So, any suggestions from you PS3 gamers out there, gaming or otherwise? I’d like to get another game (FPS, preferably) to go with UT3—any thoughts? And is anyone else about ready to go the PS3 way?

P.S. Yes, I already have "Call of Duty 4" for the Xbox 360 (and yes, I'm addicted)...how about some PS3 games that aren't available for the 360?

Update: So the PS3 came on Friday, as scheduled, and I've been tinkering with it for the past few days. Keep your eyes peeled for my first impressions. (Sneak preview: It's way, way quieter than the Xbox 360, and Blu-ray looks amazing at 1080p/24fps. But the PS3 menus can't hold a candle to the 360 Dashboard, the PlayStation Store is pretty anemic...and no concept of achievements? Please.)

PS3 is getting DLC for GTA IV...whoever said it wasn't needs to do some more article searching...not to mention it is going to be compatible with HOME...as far as FPS goes....ZZZZZZZZZ i've had COD4 since day one and while i still play it I am so bored of it now...but my point was that M$ has oversatuarated the 360 with FPS what about some TPS like SOCOM...which is coming out in November for the PS3...as far as UT3 goes...IMO it blows...you chould have saved your dough and gotten Uncharted, that games shows off the PS3's true power and HD quality like no game on either console. IMO M$ has made so many cookie cutter games available for the 360 that they have pretty much killed their Live users hunger for original and authentic game design and gameplay

Heavenly Sword is a good games. but if you're like me, who like classic wars and plane, then Blazing Angel is a good game to get. one more thing, there already a remote for ps3. should'va bought that one instead of a IR Infra cuz you can use it anywhere in the danged room and not have to point it at the console. one more things. like the previous poster said, it bluetooth ready. meaning, if you already have sumding bluetooth (ie headset, controller and probably PDA) you can just easily hook it up to the ps3. 60gb owner since November 2007 and enjoying it. (current game: COD4)

I have an xbox 360.It has a lot of great games and the graphics are great.I can't complain about it.I really don't plan on buying a ps3 any time soon and probably won't buy one. There aren't that many games that really catch my attention on it.

Unlike people who don't know that you have CoD4. I will not write about it. You should get Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction. It's somewhat easy but very addicting (unfortunately no online). Plus it looks awesome, even on SDTVs. Resistance 2 is soon to come out, but you should get Resistance: Fall of Man first. NHL 08 has a very good control scheme for a hockey game. The graphics might be better than on the 360. But the game is the same. Depends on how comfortable the analogs are for you. Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. Warhawk (comes with bluetooth headset same price.) Or download it fully for $30. Heavenly Sword. Download flOw. Dualshock 3 (the vibrating SIXAXIS) is already available before the posting of this blog.

you said you got a 40gig version but the 80 gig is the one that came with motorstorm whats up?

Warhawk is the most addictive game I have ever played. Just start out in smaller rooms for a while. You will be killed so quickly in a 32 player room .

Call Of Duty 4 if you are into Guerilla Warfare & Rainbow Six: Vegas 1 or 2 for a more tactical feel. Any other games are second rate...All 3 are great games.

You need to get Gran Turismo 5 Prologue... absolutely the best looking driving game out there. There's no better driving simulator out there than the GT line of games and you can't get it on the XBox...

Hey Ben, You should definitely get Metal gear Solid 4 for the PS3. It is going to be amazing! Also later this year, get Killzone 2, Little Big Planet, and Haze. These last few games are all PS# exclusives, so enjoy!!! -aiyer03@yahoo.com Gamer tag (PS3): Vishyer

Hi Ben, Get COD4 yet? I hope you did! Best money spent ever! I like the PS3. I also liked Halo BUT the XBOX 360 malfunction (red circle of death) is really killing my video game addiction. I play the PS3 and it runs smooth. Im afraid of the malfunction on the over-heating xbox360. GTAIV looks sick !!!!!!

You should try SOCOM Confrontation. It's not available on XBox, which is one of the only reasons I haven't purchased an XBox.
