"Hound" pulls the trigger on PS3, Blu-ray

After much hemming and hawing, I finally gave in and ordered my very own PlayStation 3—which also means I’m at last going Blu. It’s a big step, but the timing—both for the PS3 platform and Blu-ray itself—seems right.

Here are the details: I bought the 40GB version of the PS3, along with a Belkin HDMI switcher (I’m already using the other HDMI inputs on my Sony Bravia, and I don’t have an HDMI receiver—or at least, not yet), a pair of HDMI cables (the PS3 doesn’t ship with one, annoyingly), a Toslink cable for digital audio, and Nyko’s Blue Wave remote—or more specifically, its IR dongle, which should let me use my Harmony universal remote with the stubbornly non-IR-supporting PS3.

My first Blu-ray movie? “Casino Royale” (since I already own “Blade Runner,” “The Shining,” and “2001” on HD DVD). And my first PS3 game (besides the bundled "Motorstorm"[Update: Turns out "Motorstorm" doesn't come with the 40GB PS3, as I discovered the hard way]): "Unreal Tournament 3."

Just for the record, my Xbox 360 isn’t going anywhere—I’ll just be one of those two-console gamers for now. Hopefully my old Xbox (my second, actually) and the new PS3 will play nice together.

What made me finally break down and get the PS3? I have to say, Blu-ray’s victory over HD DVD was one of the deciding factors. And not only is the $400 40GB PS3 one of the most affordable Blu-ray players on the market, but it’s also the most future proof, as the recent software updates for BD-Live (which allows for Net-enabled features and downloads) and the lossless DTS-HD Master Audio format have shown.

And then there’s the gaming. The PS3 had a weak start with some so-so launch titles (“Resistance” being the one game that people seemed to really like), but now we’re seeing some actual gotta-have exclusives coming down the pike, including “Uncharted” and “Unreal Tournament 3” (well, at least until UT3’s upcoming arrival for the Xbox 360). Also, I’m glad that Sony finally got with the program with its soon-to-arrive rumbling SIXAXIS controller.

Finally, there’s PlayStation Home, the "Second Life"-like world for PlayStation gamers that’s set to launch later this year. I admit, I was skeptical of Home when it was first announced—what’s so great about avatars, anyway?—but still, I’m intrigued, and I want to be ready when Home opens its doors.

I’m expecting my new PS3 to arrive on my doorstep tomorrow (Friday the 18th), so I’ll make sure to check in once I’ve got it up and running.

So, any suggestions from you PS3 gamers out there, gaming or otherwise? I’d like to get another game (FPS, preferably) to go with UT3—any thoughts? And is anyone else about ready to go the PS3 way?

P.S. Yes, I already have "Call of Duty 4" for the Xbox 360 (and yes, I'm addicted)...how about some PS3 games that aren't available for the 360?

Update: So the PS3 came on Friday, as scheduled, and I've been tinkering with it for the past few days. Keep your eyes peeled for my first impressions. (Sneak preview: It's way, way quieter than the Xbox 360, and Blu-ray looks amazing at 1080p/24fps. But the PS3 menus can't hold a candle to the 360 Dashboard, the PlayStation Store is pretty anemic...and no concept of achievements? Please.)

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare reminds me of another great game - EA Battlefield 2: Modern Combat. This one was cool for the old, Halo Translucent Edition X-BOX I have. The game play was somewhat the same, but the PS3 graphics make this "Duty" game shine !!! Flawless!!! Shout-out to the folks at Infinity Ward and ActiVision for making a fine example of entertaining software. I've been a gamer since the CollecoVision and IntelliVision (Donkey Kong Jr.) in the early 80's and It's exciting to see how games have grown.

If your into racing games as well as first person shooters, get Gran turismo prologue. Its a small game at the moment but shows massive potentiol to your great investment. For exclusive first person shooter well bar from resistance's and Unreal , i'd wait for Haze. their aint many exclusive first person shooter on the playstation yet but their will be. Especially with the new resistance and killzone 2 on the horizon. enjoy your console. Just to join the fan boy ism list, i love the ps3 to bits its great i prefer it to the 360 but still I'll be getting the 360 back eventually, my first one died. for gears of war mainly

Wow it seems no really read your article. (COD4 anyone) I know it is not a fps but "stuntman ignition" is a bargain bin game ($19) and me and the lads have a lot of fun with it. And NHL 08 is the best hockey sim I have ever played super fun. Now (I am not sure but) I believe any content that will go to the 360 (GTA4) will be timed exclusive so don't let anyone tell you one platform will be getting more than the other just sooner (since this is normal for R*) and the game runs better on the Ps3 (no real first hand just word of mouth) And GTA4 will have your FPS elements as well as being an excellent game. Wait for a couple of weeks and pick that up.

Man you guy's are boring. Dude, you should get the game Skate...it's sick. OR if you could get like Tony Hawk's Proving Ground for PS3. that's sick. if you don't like skateboarding games you could get one of these: Call of Duty 4 for PS3, GTA lV, Metal Gear Solid 4, The Simpsons Game, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, Iron Man, Robert Ludlum's The Bourne Conspiracy, Assassin's Creed, GTA lV Special Edition, The Orange Box, Kane & Lynch: Dead Men, Turok, Def Jam: Icon, Haze, Viking: Battle for Asgard, Condemned 2: Bloodshot, Conflict: Denied Ops, or darkSector.

I'm a Wii girl myself, but I'd cave in for the latest Final Fantasy.

Ben, Congrats on going multi-platform. You asked for more suggestions on FPS's, but if you own COD4 and are going to be buying UT3, the rest of the games are a distant second. R6 Vegas 2 is good, but is totally eclipsed by COD4. R6 Vegas is fun, but it's been collecting dust for weeks now. I'm sure you have Halo 3, but if you play too much UT3 even Halo seem slow motion; jumps seem to take longer, falling, like when running off a ledge or cliff, seems unrealistic (even though I love Halo, UT3 changed my perception of FPS), and the guns start to look smaller in comparision. **Halo fans, don't get angry with me...I've been playing Halo since day one** Seriously, COD4 on your 360 and UT3 on PS3 is all any multi-platform owner needs for FPSs. There are other games for the PS3 that are alright, but any UT3 is the only unique FPS on PS3 other than Resistance (but that's over a year old).

I'm looking to getting the PS3. The victory of the Blu-ray is big, however, the major draw back for me was that I heard sports games don't play as well on the PS3 as they do on the Xbox360 (which I have). Keep me posted on your enjoyment of this gadget. Let me know if you get any sports games.

Hey Ben, you should get some of the PS3 exclusives such as: Uncharted: Drakes Fortune Resistance: Fall of Man Ratchet and Clank Future: Fall of Man Warhawk All of them are great games.

"I'll never get a ps3, I'm happy with my xbox 360, specially knowing the 360 is getting dlc for gta iv and ps3 isn't." Do your research man, from what I've heard the PS3 version will be THE one to get. There aren't many specifics yet, but with the PS3's superior graphics and hardware. Plus the guaranteed hard drive space AND guaranteed next-gen disc support, the PS3 will win hands down. Although in the 360's defense, they will have downloadable content first. But just becuase your first, doesn't mean your the best. Here's an article I found online about this comparison: "I am not trying to start yet another console war, while on Gametrailers I come across bonus round in which the guests Michael Pachter, Pete Wanat and Chris Morell and covers the topic, What version of GTA IV will win: Xbox 360 or Sony PS3. If you are an Xbox 360 owner, then I understand that you will say Xbox version all the way, however looking at some of the facts the Sony PlayStation version of GTA4 will include PlayStation Home support. This could be a big boost for the PS3 version. However it looks as though the Xbox 360 will receive their downloadable content before the PS3 gets theirs." http://www.product-reviews.net/2008/03/31/what-version-of-grand-theft-auto-iv-will-win-xbox-360-or-sony-ps3/

Definitely get Warhawk, it's a little different from every other tactical shooter but it is awesome and fun as heck It's fast paced and beautiful and it keeps expanding via updates and expansions. Whether you like flying, driving, sniping, gunning, or laying traps, it's got it all and it's especially rewarding to be veresatile and adapt to the type of battle. I've logged 180 hours and can't get enough of it.

WARHARK!!!! Uncharted is also a must. Heavenly Sword (though people complain that it's short) is a pretty good game. As for FPS's. You already know about Resistance and the second coming for it later this year. HAZE!!! It may surprise and it's out next month. But get Warhawk and you can get the bundled booster packs for $12. I've got UT3 has well. I've also preordered GTAIV and MGS4. MGO will be interesting. Look me up... PSN - ThEosSiE

warhawk is a great game but that's not going 2 matter soon because gta4 and metal gear solid 4 are close, so everyone will be in those. warhawk is a very complex game and takes alot of time and practice but it's a very great feeling when you become a plague 2 the other team. i've played all the top games out for both systems and I think warhawk is the best online experience, but that's my opinion

You've gottacheck out Encharted: Drake Fotune. And also be on the lookout for MGS4. It also nice to see you've come to your senses and bought a REAL next-gen console

You are definitely going to have to get Uncharted. I jsut got it and could not stop playing it. Warhawk is also incredible. The new maps that were just released are so elaborate that no other game's online play can compete with it. Like they said before, you also have to keep an eye out for Haze, MGS4 and may even want to pick up Gran Turismo Prologue which is only about $39.99. All of which are PS3 exclusive titles.

Ben, After you've had a chance to play with the PS3 for a while I'd really like it if you could write a side by side comparison of it and the Xbox. I have been a longtime PC gamer and because of the rising cost of PC gaming machines and the ever growing list of hardware requirements for PC games I've decided to explore moving over to PS3 or to the Xbox Elite. I'd welcome your unbiased comments and observations on this topic.

I too just switched from Xbox 360 and feel that not only is the future bright for PS3, but the quality of the console just feels much better. Runs quiet, no freezes and just seems like a better built system. I'm plyaing Vegas 2 and I'm sure its comparable to Xbox 360 version, still great game if you haven't played it yet. I too look forward to Home and the Blu Ray is quite nice.

Gran Turismo 5 Prologue is beautiful. Absolutely gorgeous. If you're into driving games you have to check it out.
