Spam turning 30 this month; no gifts, please

The date: May 3, 1978. The culprit: Gary Thuerk, a marketer for the old Digital Equipment Corporation. His crime: Sending a sales e-mail to 393 users on Arpanet (then a U.S. government computer network and the predecessor of today's Internet). Little did Thuerk know that he'd just become the world's first spammer.

That first piece of junk e-mail (which wasn't called "spam" until about 15 years later) has been memorialized over at Brad Templeton's Web site (Templeton is a Net pioneer, the creator of the legendary rec.humor.funny Usenet group, and chairman of the Eletronic Frontier Foundation), along with a thread of outraged replies.

So, without further ado, here you go—the world's first spam (presented in its original all-caps format):

Thuerk's message was first greeted by a stern reprimand from one Major Raymond Czahor, chief administrator of Arpanet, followed by a long discussion thread as Arpanet users—many of whom were wary of censorship on their messaging network—mulled the impact of this first piece of junk e-mail:

"I don't see any place for advertising on the ARPAnet," user Mark Crispin wrote at the time. "Certainly not the bulk advertising of that DEC message. From the address list, it seems clear to me that the people it was sent to were the Californians listed in the last ARPAnet directory. This was a clear and flagrant abuse of the directory! I am not sure as to how far this should be carried though."

For the record, the pioneering spammer told the Wall Street Journal that his ground-breaking e-mail worked, drawing scores of leads and about $12 million in tech sales. Thuerk says he never spammed again, and he reportedly does promos for spam-fighting companies, but he's not spending any time blaming himself for the current spam epidemic. "If the airline loses your luggage do you blame the Wright brothers?" he told the Journal. I'm not sure I get the logic there, but...whatever.

    I think the people who send this garbage should have to use their real e mail address. I did have one that used their own e-address, they must have been new to the game, and I contacted them and said if they sent it to me again I would flood their e mail box with 100+ replies a day. I didn't get any more from them. To all those who send this stuff---have guts and use your real e-address. I think you know it is wrong and you want to hide behind the fake address. Oh well, this reply did not solve anything, just made me feel better for a minute. Have a great day to all--even you spammers.

    i would like to let the spammers know that i do not have a penis and no matter how big they can make it i dont plan on gettin one anytime soon. Also I will be writng a book on how to win the lottery because ive gotten so good at it .....i just keep winning and i dont even remember entering :) gary your an ----- !!

    It would be easy to get rid of SPAM. Just find out the owner of the company that created the SPAM, kill him, and hang his corpse to rot in the town square for all to see. After you kill a few SPAM'ers, the resting of the SPAM'ers will get the message and stop sending the stuff. Kill 'em all, and let God sort 'em out.

    The sad thing is every so often, I do get spam in my inbox and it does make my Blackbrry ring excessively! Why on't Gary and spam just die already!!

    Slightly off topic but is it just me or is Yahoo's spam filter not catching a lot lately? I'm getting 4-10 spam messages coming straight to my inbox.

    Sorry to say, but just like when we first had cable T.V it was supposed to be "commercial free". Now look, we even have infomercials. This is just another marketing tool and there must be someone buying this crap or they wouldn't spam all of us. And just think, when we leave this life NONE of it goes with you.

    Oh for God's sake, leave Gary alone. It was 30 years ago, he did it once, and it was fewer than 400 people. He is NOT responsible for the current epidemic. If he had not been the first, someone else would have done it.

    The only way to get SPAM gone is to have people stop sending it! Period! Your SPAM blocker works well, but not that well. My suggestion is to create at least 2 email addresses, one that only your friends have and one that you use to register for products, buy stuff, etc. That's where SPAM comes from. It comes from companies selling their email lists and going forward from there.

    Where is the world so worry about with spam, let we all be fair, sending mailings to mailboxes and sending brochures into home-mailboxes are 2 same kind of things,,, it's all part of the business-game. I find that everyone must be free to send mailings. Where is the democracy anymore ? In this century when you send 1 email only to someone and this person doesn't know you, that they already want to get you in core for 'spamming'. Let this be a free world please, hope there are lots of fighters left for this freedom. People complain to much and to fast. Kind regards to all readers, PM
