"GTA IV" breaks records, but doesn't take out "Iron Man"

The latest "Grand Theft Auto" game did, indeed, make a mint last week—but not at the expense of the high-flying "Iron Man", despite all the hand wringing in Hollywood.

First, let's look at the just-released sales figures for GTA IV, and yeah, they're huge: $500 million in the first week, with 3.6 million copies sold...on the first day. By way of comparison, Halo 3—hailed at the time as the fastest selling game ever—made a "mere" $300 million in its first week.

Naturally, these massive figures—or the threat of them, anyway—briefly revived the whole "video games will kill the movie business!" thing, with industry watchers worrying last week that GTA IV could put a serious dent in "Iron Man," the Marvel Comics summer epic that bowed last weekend.

A (supposed) case in point: Ben Stiller's "The Heartbreak Kid," which debuted last September on the same week as Halo 3 and earned only $14 million at the box office.

Well, Robert Downey Jr. and "Iron Man" came and conquered, raking in $102 million in its first week—apparently the biggest haul for a non-sequel film since "Spider-Man" back in 2002.

Huh—OK, but what happened with "The Heartbreak Kid" back in September? I'm just taking a wild stab here, but maybe moviegoers skipped the "Kid" because it was a bad, bad movie.

Anyway, it looks like this town is big enough for the likes of Niko, Iron Man, or whatever summer blockbuster (digital or celluloid) might be coming down the pike.

And a note to Hollywood execs: If your turkey of a movie tanks at the box office, don't blame us gamers.

OK, so give me a show of hands: Who bought GTA IV last week and managed to catch a screening of "Iron Man"? (And how was "Iron Man," by the way?)

Star Trek? You have no idea what you are talking about, kid. Nice work, Iron Man. I plan on buying GTA4 this week. Good point, Halo has always been strictly for XBOX, until they released it for the PC. I'd like to see those sales numbers as well.

Maybe I had time on my hands...but I got GTA opening day, and watched Iron Man opening day as well. Both were incredible! Although replay factor...gotta hand it to GTA. Never been much of a movie theater patron...I'd rather have it on blu-ray. =)

Yes, it should be noted that the "mere" 300 million sold of Halo 3 were sales exclusive to the XBOX 360. GTA IV sales included sales for both the 360 and PS3. To compare the two in the manner that this article suggests does not fairly account for the portion of GTA IV sales for the PS3 alone. Had Halo 3 been a multiplatform game I am certain the numbers would have been much closer. Since the split of Bungie and Microsoft, fans of the series may see the next installment of Halo on both the PS3 and 360 which I believe will easily surpass the GTA IV sales figure.

Youd think they could ensure that the articles they post on here would be free of errors and seem professionally written. I often feel like I am reading articles written by a 14 year old for a junior high English class. Come on yahoo, step it up or give me a job!!!!!

Well, you see. With all sorts of things going on in America it is understandable why we would spend so much money in the entertainment industry. If only to numb us for a brief moment from all the talk about the war and arguments over gas prices. It's interesting in a way to think that the majority of consumers, making less money then they spend, would use their assets for entertainment. After saying all that, GTA IV lived up to most of it's expectations except for the fact that maybe the missions are too simple and possibly too repetitive in theme and quality. -Miguel

I have GTA IV and watched Iron man. Both good, but Iron man entertains for 2 hours at the most, where GTA entertains for 30+ hours. ever think about that?

a mere $300 mil?? if GTA IV wants to brag shouldn't they sell $600 mil after all it does sell on double the counsels so it should make double the sells.... sure theres more 360s then ps3 but 500 mill is far from 300 and I'm sure everybody would love to see halo on the ps3
