Wii Fit could be as scarce as, well, the Wii

Online retailers have stopped taking preorders for the much-hyped Wii Fit—sound familiar?—while shoppers scratch their heads over the exact launch date.

I just did a quick survey of the bigger online shopping sites, and no one's taking preorders for Nintendo's $90 balance-board-packing exercise game (read all about it here). Amazon, Best Buy, Wal-Mart, GameStop, even Sears-all sold out.

And if you're thinking of just walking into your local big-box retailer to grab a Wii Fit off the shelves, well ... you'll have to wait until Wednesday, May 21.

Strange, considering Nintendo held a New York launch event on Monday, with some lucky shoppers carting away white-and-green Wii Fit boxes in the process.

Indeed, it looks like there was some confusion among retailers, shoppers, and even Nintendo itself over the exact U.S. launch date for Wii Fit.

Last month, Nintendo announced Wii Fit would land on store shelves May 19. Then the Wii Fit ads came out, and they all said May 21. GameSpot reported that it checked with Nintendo of America just last week, and reps said May 19 was still the big day. Guess they were wrong.

Anyway, it's looking like Wii Fit will be a hot ticket-maybe as hot as the Wii console itself, which even now remains in short supply.

We'll have to wait until Wednesday to see just how many-or how few-Wii Fit units ship to stores nationwide. But if you're hoping for guaranteed time on Nintento's wireless balance board this week, consider staking out your local electronics retailer Wednesday morning. Either that, or prepare to pay double on eBay.

    HERE'S A NOVEL IDEA...INSTEAD OF WORKING OUT IN FRONT OF A VIDEO GAME. GET YOUR LAZY BUTTS OUT OF THE HOUSE AND DO SOME REAL EXERCISE!!!

    Camp outside the retailer? yeh right. I tried to get a Wii at the stores when it first came out. Even got there before certain stores opened. Never got one. If Nintendo wants to do business that way, stringing American customers along, then so be it. I for one abandoned the desire for a Wii. And stick it in your... ear all of those people who bought lots of them to sell them at a jacked up price, or that got one because your relative, friend works at the local retail store and held one for you. You too Nintendo!

    I want one! I played the Olympics game with my kids and got a workout. It was fun! I can't wait for this one!

    Wii's good I guess if you want it for everything except actually playing current gen games, which is what I thought it was meant for. Don't get me wrong Nintendo's always been innovative but for real gamers the Cube really began Nintendo's decline and the Wii has only proven to show that Nintendo aims to continue down that path. Personally I choose to work out with actual workout equipment but I guess this games going to hit a niche'. Seriously though, if you're a parent who let's your kids sit in front of the TV all day playing games and eating chips do you think this game is really going to make a difference? How long do you think a grosly obese kid will stick to it? my whole point for gaming to to let loose a bit, I work my work, I pound my workout, I take care of the kid, and when I play games I like to be playing not working.
