That PlayStation 3, Wii, or Xbox 360 in your living room contains a potpourri of dangerous chemicals and compounds—or so says Greenpeace, which is urging game manufacturers to learn from each other to build greener consoles.
Greenpeace says it conducted a tear-down survey of the PS3, the Wii, and the Xbox 360, and claims that researchers found unacceptably high levels of such toxic chemicals as polyvinyl chloride (PVC), phthalates, beryllium, and bromine.
In its report, Greenpeace points out that long-term exposure to bromine (a chemical used in fire retardants) could lead to "impaired learning and memory functions." Good luck remembering your way through Arcadia in BioShock.
Meanwhile, the phthalate known as DEHP may "interfere with sexual development in mammals, including humans, and especially males," the report says. I'm not sure I like the sound of that.
The news from Greenpeace isn't all bad. The group notes that it didn't find any beryllium in the Wii at all, and that its levels of PVC and phthalates were "limited." Researchers praised the PS3 for its "bromine-free" circuit boards, while the Xbox 360 had "fewer brominated materials" it its plastic housing.
"If manufacturers only looked at each other's products, they'd quickly see ways of replacing their own dirty components with toxic-free materials," the report concludes.
For their part, Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony all say that their consoles meet or exceed regional environmental regulations, according to Reuters.

Personally I think both this article and the press release from green peace is missing something very important....links to the actual reports that show the numbers, sure their spouting off about polyvinyl chloride (PVC), phthalates, beryllium, and bromine but where are the numbers to back up that my PS3 or XBOX 360 is giving off enough of any one of them to do long term damage. as for the statement that most older generation systems end up in a landfill somewhere. hands up those who have either traded in their old systems or, like myself still own every one ever bought
Who cares. They need to waste there time on something more important. Their lives just aren't complete unless they have something to cry about.
If it were up to Greenpeace we would only be allowed to bang rocks together for entertainment. Considering how bad a reputation Greenpeace has with representing the truth you can't take much of what they say very serious._____ Thank you Ben for your concern but I'm with jjgt25 above in saying Who cares?? it's Greenpeace!
Glad none of you care. Try this one, "my child has a birth defect, seems there's a dump 100 miles from my house that infected the ground water and there are trace levels of (insert chemical of the day here) coming out of my tap!" That's really sad, but who cares dude, have you seen NHL 08 in High Definition??!! But really, don't let me interrupt your enlightened discussion on Greenpeace. Morons.

yeah and a lot of the foods we eat are toxic too! how can any of these affect us?do the toxins give off a vapor or what? i'm not going to worry about it.the consoles would not have been released if the danger factor was high.interesting article though and maybe the respective console makers will look at the others and do things differently.
