Cheaper Blu-ray players finally on the way?

Word is that the Blu-ray Disc Association is poised to license Blu-ray technology to almost a dozen Chinese electronics manufacturers—and that means budget (and by "budget," I mean south of $199) Blu-ray players could be on the horizon.

Engadget HD found a report claiming that the BDA will grant licenses to a total of 11 Chinese companies, which would allow them to crank out a flood of inexpensive Blu-ray players.

Now, would you actually want to buy a Blu-ray deck from a little-known or no-name manufacturer? Maybe, maybe not—but a flood of cheap players would (presumably) force Blu-ray prices to drop across the board, and it's about time.

Up to this point, the Blu-ray camp had only granted a handful of licenses to China-based companies, Engadget HD notes—and that's allowed big-name manufactures like Panasonic, Samsung, and Sony to keep Blu-ray prices in the $300-and-up range.

Indeed, Sony's last-generation BDP-S300 deck—which is still saddled with the old BD Profile 1.0 (we're now on Profile 2.0, which allows for Net-enabled features and picture-in-picture video commentaries)—is selling for a whopping $350 and up.

The story adds that we probably won't see Blu-ray players from Chinese companies until next year, so don't expect prices to drop just yet.

Still, 2009 could be a big year for Blu-ray if players finally start selling for less than $199—and especially if some big titles, such as the "Indiana Jones" movies, perhaps, go Blu during the holidays.

OK, Blu-ray holdouts—how low will BD prices have to go before you spring for a player?

$199, but only with profile 2.0 ... but I hate giving Sony any of my money, directly or indirectly. I still haven't forgetten that they tried to install a rootkit on my PC.

I hope they don't use the same paint they used in our kids' toys.

I have a PS3 but i still wont buy Blu Ray and the reasons are... -I have three TV's in my house, DVD in the Car, Protable DVD, One Blu Ray Player. -If i can only play Blu-Ray on my PS3 its not worth it to upgrade if i can just upconvert my DVD's. - Blu-Ray will never take off because of Downloadable HD and the mighty DVD. -I think people are tired of upgrading from VHS to Laser Disk to DVD then to Blu Ray... whats next? HVD? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holographic_Versatile_Disc -the only way i would buy Blu-Ray is if movies started only going on Blu-Ray.. or i could just wait for that PS3 Movie Service and use HULU!

    if i won a blu-ray player in a contest . . . i'd probably give it away . . . as long as blu-ray discs are still well above twenty bucks a pop . . . i'm sitting on the sidelines . . . up-converting dvd's gives me an awesome picture . . .
