Starbucks begins offering "free" Wi-Fi — with strings attached

Want a couple of "complimentary" hours of Wi-Fi at your local Starbucks? Fine—but you'll need a pre-paid Starbucks card first, along with a tolerance for occasional "special offer" e-mails from AT&T.

So here's the deal: As of today, you can waltz into any of 7,000 corporate-owned Starbucks, fire up your Wi-Fi-equipped laptop or smartphone, and start surfing away over the store's wireless hotspot, all compliments of Starbucks and AT&T. That's a good start.

First, however (and as previously announced), you'll need a refillable Starbucks Card with at least $5 on it, and you must have used your card at least once within the last 30 days. OK, fine.

Also, you only get two hours of free surfing a day—so if your local Starbucks doubles as your office, you'll have to pay up eventually. Oh, and you must use your two hours of Wi-Fi in one sitting, not an hour here and an hour there.

Then there's the matter of setting up separate AT&T and Starbucks.com accounts online—mildly annoying, but doable.

Last but not least: You also must agree to up to four e-mails per year from AT&T (about "special offers that you might find valuable"). Now, AT&T promises not to give your e-mail address out to anyone else, and four e-mails a year doesn't quite constitute a flood. Still, given the choice, I'd pick no solicitation e-mails at all.

Guess that's the price you pay for "free" Wi-Fi—at Starbucks, anyway.

Meanwhile, still no word no word on when (or if) iPhone users will get free Starbucks Wi-Fi access. Will we get an announcement next week during Steve Jobs' Apple keynote? We'll have to wait and see.

Starbucks is taking their cue from American Airlines! This isn't free. Overpriced, poor tasting coffee, underpaid and abused staff (see prior news on lawsuits), and now this non-benefit. That's what they get for collborating with AT&T. AT&T charges you $149 for a new Razr or free for a reburbished. T-Mobile has a free NEW Razr. You know what they say ... birds of a feather...

I'm glad it's NOT totally free. There's nothing worse that walking into a Starbucks (or Panera or ) and having no place to sit and eat or drink because internet surfers have monopolized all of the tables for hours on end, thinking that buying one measley cup of coffee entitles them to camp out for the day.

And Starbucks wonders why their stock is plummeting faster than housing lenders out of windows. What a moronic idea, from a company that obviously does not "get it." I can go to any other coffee shop in America (like their one of their major competitors Cosi) and log in to free (actually free, no email spam) wireless internet. Another miss from a downward spiralling company. the second Dunkin Donuts installs sofa's and free wifi I think starbucks will be long out of business. And to the shareholders, The five dollar starbuck card for free wifi might be a problem as that's soon to be the total value of their stock.

They had better go ahead and give the WiFi free. Plus i have yet to find any low acid coffee there yet.

Why would you jump through all those hoops for Free WiFi?? The McDonalds by my house has free WiFi. Most hotels have free WiFi. Just park your car in their lot and surf away.

I hate that as much as everything in Starbucks costs they don't offer free wi-fi!!!!!!

Why not give props to Panera Bread. They've had free wi-fi for years and you can spend hours in there online. Their Hazelnut Coffee is delightful as well.

this is madness. how much more business would they do if they just offered it for free! It would pay for the wireless router and the subscription. This simple business decision seems like rocket science for sbucks!

That's total b.s. Dunkin gives you free wi-fi. And if you really believe AT&T doesn't sell your name, sign up with them for phone service. They sell your name to EVERYBODY.

Hey Starbucks! Take your two hours and shove it up your Expresso!
