Starbucks begins offering "free" Wi-Fi — with strings attached

Want a couple of "complimentary" hours of Wi-Fi at your local Starbucks? Fine—but you'll need a pre-paid Starbucks card first, along with a tolerance for occasional "special offer" e-mails from AT&T.

So here's the deal: As of today, you can waltz into any of 7,000 corporate-owned Starbucks, fire up your Wi-Fi-equipped laptop or smartphone, and start surfing away over the store's wireless hotspot, all compliments of Starbucks and AT&T. That's a good start.

First, however (and as previously announced), you'll need a refillable Starbucks Card with at least $5 on it, and you must have used your card at least once within the last 30 days. OK, fine.

Also, you only get two hours of free surfing a day—so if your local Starbucks doubles as your office, you'll have to pay up eventually. Oh, and you must use your two hours of Wi-Fi in one sitting, not an hour here and an hour there.

Then there's the matter of setting up separate AT&T and Starbucks.com accounts onlinemildly annoying, but doable.

Last but not least: You also must agree to up to four e-mails per year from AT&T (about "special offers that you might find valuable"). Now, AT&T promises not to give your e-mail address out to anyone else, and four e-mails a year doesn't quite constitute a flood. Still, given the choice, I'd pick no solicitation e-mails at all.

Guess that's the price you pay for "free" Wi-Fiat Starbucks, anyway.

Meanwhile, still no word no word on when (or if) iPhone users will get free Starbucks Wi-Fi access. Will we get an announcement next week during Steve Jobs' Apple keynote? We'll have to wait and see.

Funny thing is starbucks gets the wireless for free from ATT. Why not like other business just pony up the 20-30 for DSL. And give it for free. SO many other places give it for free.

Tully's and other small coffee places actually offer free wi-fi. Turn on computer and go. Why should I keep a starbucks current when I can go elsewhere. Sorry Starbucks nice try but no go.

I go to Panera, wi-fi is free, the coffee is less expensive. c'mon Starbucks, you can afford to offer free wi-fi!

I have been thinking Starbucks market share when down when they stopped having free WiFi, and that bringing it back would help them out a lot. But this is not the way to do it. Panera has no limits and I would much rather go there even if it is more out of the way. Plus they have free coffee refills while I sit there working. I know Starbucks is trying to not have to pay to offer free WiFi, but I think it would be worth the investment to just offer it with no strings attached to bring back their customer base - i.e. students, free-lance business types, etc.

i just will go to panera where the wifi is free and i can enjoy my coffee there or i don't have to buy any if i don't want to and they will let me sit there all day. this will hurt starbucks more than it will help them. word get around fast and this is not going to work.

If I have to buy anything to get something "free", then IT AIN'T FREE! (Tip: You might be able to surf from outside their stores...I've done it a few times)... Better yet, go to your local library, or just surf from home/work. If you gotta pay, at least you can be in comfy clothes and near accessible bathrooms.

go to panera bread. u wont be disappointed. besides for the same price as starbucks coffee u could get a capp and bagel with cream cheese for the same price, and better ambiance.

I own a coffee shop here in Hendersonville, NC. I offer free internet. I find it ridiculous to charge or place restrictions on when a "customer" can use it. I mean, how cheap can you be? They make more than enough to just give it for free.......or are they just too money hungry??

  • 23 Posted by dtmedin on Thu Sep 3, 2009 3:49PM EDT Report Abuse

Heck, even MCDONALDS has free WiFi in most stores and has equal coffee quality and much lower pricing to-boot. Starbucks, you're way behind the trend...!

  • 24 Posted by josephshanebone on Thu Sep 3, 2009 4:41PM EDT Report Abuse

This is simple. What is Starbucks core business and mission. see link http://www.starbucks.com/aboutus/environment.asp Note: Internet access should not be a bribe for you to buy products. It should be a draw. What could a month of Internet access possibly cost Starbucks and really,,, how many Mocha, mucka, mega chocolate, caffeine, sugary fat blasters does it take to pay for that Internet access....? Starbucks is in the Internet business? Bathrooms are free use... chairs... music playing ... hmmm and none of these are even close to being as important as Internet access. We will stand silent will full baldders and hold our laptops and surf the web and drink our wonderful mixture, just GIVE US INTERNET...

Guess I'll stick with Dunkin Donuts... the coffee is better and the wifi is free - no strings attached!
