Rumor: Motion-sensing, "break-apart" controller for PS3?

Depending on the source, the new controller either breaks into two pieces, a la the Wiimote and the Nunchuk, or comes in even smaller modules that you'd attach to your hands and feet.

Gamesindustry.biz was first out of the gates with rumors of a new motion-sensing controller for the PS3, adding that Sony already has working models of the supposed Wii-like gaming pad.

The new controller would "break apart" into two separate, accelerometer-equipped pieces, which you'd wield (I'm assuming) more or less the same way as you would a Wiimote and a Nunchuk, Gameindustry.biz reports.

Meanwhile, gaming blog Kotaku is taking a different tack, with its spies claiming that instead of a "break apart" device, the new controller would consist of several smaller sensors that you'd attach to your body—like, say, to your hands and feet.

That could be interesting for a fighting game like Virtual Fighter or Mortal Kombat—although I'd hope I wouldn't be expected to perform those joint-defying kicks myself.

Naturally, Sony isn't commenting on the rumors, although Gameindustry.biz claims the new controller—in whatever form it takes—will be ready in time for next month's E3 gaming conference.

Interesting stuff, especially considering the rumors we heard back in April that Microsoft was working on its own Wii-like remote for the Xbox 360. I haven't heard a peep about it since then, but perhaps Microsoft and Sony are both waiting for E3 to make their announcements.

Stay tuned.

There are a LOT of rumors going on about the PS3... I'm going to laugh when none of it is true and sony does nothing or something completely out there and unexpected...

i personly don't like this stuff. the bowling game on wii sports was fun but the rest just makes your arms sore. plus the motion sensers aren't good enough for many games (like golf) and you find your switching back to button pushing to increase accuracy.
