Helio on the ropes?

Word is that the merger talks between the hip—but cash-strapped—virtual carrier (which brought you the Helio Ocean) and Virgin Mobile have stalled, and that Helio's retail stores might soon close their doors.

MocoNews got an official statement from Helio on Friday, which says that there is "no news to share" and that "Helio, SK Telecom and Virgin Mobile continue to be in discussions exploring possible strategic opportunities."

But rumors are flying that talks between Helio and Virgin Mobile have gone nowhere, and that Helio—which lost $326 million last year, with just $171 million in revenue—is looking to shave costs by shuttering its kiosks and retail locations.

It's just not looking good for Helio, one of the most promising MVNOs (mobile virtual network operator—essentially a "virtual" carrier that piggybacks off another carrier's network, in this case Sprint's) around.

Helio's QWERTY-packing Ocean slider was one of the best handsets I saw last year, and spy shots of a sequel—the rumored Ocean 2—are (even now) still flying around the Web.

But the tricky MVNO market is littered with failures—witness Mobile ESPN, Disney Mobile, and the sudden collapses of Amp'd Mobile and the high-end Voce Wireless, which left its subscribers high and dry when it shut down without warning in February.

Personally, I hope Helio makes it—after all, it's the most impressive of the high-profile MVNOs, and its cutting-edge handsets (particularly the Ocean) are only getting better. But, as I said, it doesn't look good.

Helio is going strong and the telecom world is rough so they just have to cut costs just like you saw Sprint closing stores earlier this year. More and more of the wireless market is now doing business online and the retail presence is less needed as before. As you said the Ocean is one of the best handsets launched last year the Helio Ocean 2 looks to be even better. They piggyback off of Sprint for their EVNO, and if it is unavailable, Helio phones rove onto Verizon for lesser services.

Get your facts correct...an unhappy employee that was fired leaked rumors to say Helio is on the rocks..the truth is the retail stores and kiosks that are underperforming owned by Helio will close. The indirect channel is here to stay!! Talks with Virgin Mobile will continue until either a deal is struck or they agree to no merger.
