Want to put a lid on the high-pitched roar of your Xbox 360? Well, you'll probably need something like this: a hulking, cooling fan-equipped aluminum case that only Iron Man could love.
I don't blame Lian Li—a respected Tawainese manufacturer that's been making computer cases for more than 20 years—for the metal monstrosity that is the PC-XB01, slated to arrive in August for an as-yet unspecified price.
No, I blame Microsoft, which rushed out a console that's so noisy and prone to overheating that it takes an iron lung to keep the thing reasonably quiet and Red Ring of Death-free.
Anyway (deep breath) ... behold the XB01. Discovered by the bloggers at Boing Boing Gadgets, the brushed-aluminum case measures 16.3 by 9.8 by 6.3 inches—or, as BBG notes, about four times the size of the 360 console itself.
Armed with a jumbo 120mm cooling fan in the back, foam soundproofing, and holes for an optional water-cooling system, the XB01 promises to muzzle the 360's deafening optical drive without causing a full-on hardware meltdown.
Here's the thing, though (besides the size issue): The PC-XB01 isn't just a metal cover for your existing Xbox console. Rather, it's designed for do-it-yourselfers who aren't afraid of cracking open the Xbox 360 and installing its bare components in the XB01's hollow shell.
In short, unless you know your way around a motherboard, you might want to wait till your 360 is out of warranty before trying this little weekend project.

I just hope microsoft learns some painful lessons from this quality problem plagued product. They shouldn't have rushed to roll the Xbox360 out when the machine still has unsolved issues. You can't really claim success if you ship 10 million units but have to replace a million of them.
Now, if they could make a PC case with an actual computer in it and THEN incorporate the 360 inside with the CPU components I might buy it. That would be cool if it had a windows media center PC and 360 built into one case and only needed one ethernet cable to run everything together and stream movies, music, etc (and be able to use that 300GB harddrive for the 360). To nighteye23: I dont think its because of cheap components. Its more a problem with the design and layout of the 360 Hardware within the 360. Still a fall back though.
Hmm, I must be doing something wrong... I read the instructions and laid my XBox 360 FLAT on the side.. in a place with ample ventillation, off the floor, keep it dusted, not enclosed. No noise, no great heat buildup... Could it be - the key to a workable XBox 360 is as simple as that?
Antec 300 case... components fried, so I transferred a friend's 360 hardware into it. Doing great so far. Quiet and cool. The case is pretty, too!

So, people actually buy an X-Box and then buy this just to ensure that it doesn't overheat because of cheap components? I'm glad I don't buy consoles anymore. They've gotten so cheap in making them it's gotten ridiculous. PC gaming FTW!
