I'm not sure if Microsoft would ever let other companies build Xbox 360 consoles—but it should, especially given the sorry state of Microsoft's gaming hardware.
But for whatever reason, Microsoft has seemed determined to make its own Xbox 360 hardware—and the results have been this side of disastrous, what with Redmond's billion-dollar write-off for glitchy consoles.
And that's too bad, because the Xbox 360 software—not to menion Xbox Live—is top-notch. Indeed, the PS3 is still struggling to add software features—such as an in-game console menu (the XrossMediaBar), cross-game achievements, and custom soundtracks—that the 360 had at launch.
Then again, Sony sure makes a heck of a console, hardware-wise—quiet, reliable (compared to the 360, at least), powered by the bleeding-edge Cell processor, packing a Blu-ray drive, and gorgeous to look at. Indeed, when I wrote my Xbox wish-list post, most of the hardware improvements I suggested were pretty much ripped off from the PS3.
Having already sent my Xbox 360 in for repairs not once, but twice, I'd welcome a 360 built by a manufacturer—heck, any manufacturer—other than Microsoft.
And, dare I say it ... I think Sony would do a pretty good job, no? It'll never happen, but it's fun to dream.
So, would you buy an Xbox 360 console built by a third party—and if so, what companies would you recruit?

I think sony and microsoft should merge their games division. The hardware would be top notch and the software would be topnotch. And then the system would be able to lay games like SOCOM and Halo. It would be great.
I say, let Sony makes it... But it's not gonna happen. And WTF is with the Chinese Company thing, you racist *******...
Microsoft loses $126 for every XBox 360 sold. Why would any other company want to take on a burden like that? Unless, if it is built into other electronics (tvs, computers, etc.) Could you imagine having a tv with a disc drive built into it. You just load your disc into the tv and game... that would be pretty sweet!
I agree, I think Sony would make a great 360. Put a Blu-Ray drive in it and give it some of that great style and I run out to pick one up. I can't get over how ugly Microsoft's design for the 360 is. I haven't bought one yet (keep hoping for more improvements like Wi-Fi) but I don't know where I could hide the thing when I do.
HTC!
The new Xboxes do not have the issues the first and second gen had so stop crying already. Oh, and the PS3 is hideous, don't kid yourself.
I feel pretty living-under-a-rock right now! I assumed everything microsoft was licensed out to other companies. I mean, it was quite a courageous effort on microsoft's part, but they screwed it up pretty badly. I have a 360 that has had no problems, but it's a different story for a friend of mine. He had his sent to microsoft and didn't get it back for nearly two and a half months.
I dont think I will ever buy anything Microsoft again. If I buy a product that has Microsoft software or what have you than so be it. My origanal xbox was great. But my 360 has been nothing but problems. With the poor customer service, this over priced turd just is not worth my hard earned money or time?
Well, 3DO was a commercial failure (systems built by 3rd parties) but you never know. It might work for Microsoft in this case.
Microsoft should go the way of sega and publish games. They are not a hardware manufacturer like Sony or Nintendo. Besides the money is made in the games not the consoles.

i would buy from a 3rd party, maybe like ati, hp, as long as i know that they took their time to make it work well, i mean for me ive only had my console for 6 months and no rrod, but still if i had to buy a new one i would hope it would b from a 3rd party i knew well and trusted
